What about when a character with some skill (say Armorer) wants to both
improve the skill and make useful items for the party. There is some room
for play in negotiating for use of an equipped smithy with or without the
'teacher' and what amount of time is to be spent working (covering living
expenses) vs straight study. Plus who pays who and how much.

Note: My rule interpretation is that work by itself does gain the worker
expertise at one half pt / day.

I figured out a basic cost of living scale, similar to that used in
RuneQuest. When dealing with "downtime" they got 1 or 2 points per day
(which assumed they did nothing but study or train). They still had to
cover their living expenses. So a profitable raid could allow them some
training time, but eventually they had to go work again.
