Well, I just thought about it some more.  I think the solution would be a Divination spell.  It's inexpensive and could be vague enough.  Perhaps if the Mage placed a divination spell in an item coupled with some form of indication...a ring that warms, or a wand that casts an illusion aura...that sort of thing.  An invasive Mage might try to test everyone in the village...a hermit might if he saw some promise in an individual...hmmmm
