Hope this goes through - haven't had any luck lately when I tried.
I don't see why a shaman could not be having/using some sacred or blessed fetish instead of a drum, such as a rattle - there are many kinds of such things throughout our own world, even now. I have even seen drums (in Alaska) that only had stretched skin heads, and no sound box/chamber.
I feel it's something a shaman builds for him-/herself while still early in apprenticeship, for it has to "tune in" to its particular user. If this is okayed, then we can have some realistic variety among our shamans, perhaps something that echoes in some way their chosen Tonah. (And I can get rid of a drum that can be awkward to handle, although I have added belt straps & a leg strap to the very small drum my favorite shaman carries at her left side at all times.) I do admit, however, that I like drumbeats, more than rattles, if the item needs to convey a sound.
