But how is it with Assassin? How do the characters gain experience in it?
So far the only way we see it (we being our gaming group), it is only
possible to TRAIN the Assassin skill. This is since there never is a roll
against the Assassin skill& so there can be no success with it. (I
bet there are other skills/packages that suffer the same way but I ve
only come across Assassin so far we re still early in to the use of
P&P.)
How how other gaming groups solved this problem?

It is a rare skill to use but there are many areas where one can use the
skill. Some examples:

* Information - Say the assassin needs to contact the Guild and find some
info he could use this skill in success to 'recall' the secret signs and
keywords to gain entry to various places.

* Backstabs: Probably the most common. Its one thing to walk behind
a person and backstab sloppy while another to do it with skill. The
A skill can help to determined the best way (should I bump up against the
target in the crowd or stab using a hidden cane weapon, etc.).

* While there is now a Stealth and Intrigue skill set these 2 subset
skills can be used with the A skill as well. How best to track (an
Assassin can maybe comeine tracking and trialing and/or assassin to
determine a baseline to roll from). So if assassin has EL30 and
EL10 Tracking you could combine or average it for a baseline depending on
the GM.

* Assassin skill is a basic subset of combat so any training in skills or
just normal combat would give some level of success.

* Ambush is another area. While theres no 'ambush' skill this skill
gives the person
the tactics for ambush. So if he/she does a good ambush he might
also get expertise.

While these are only examples the skill should not be used daily.
It should be maintained in balance since its a powerful skill due to all
the various bonuses it gives.

Hope this helps.

Also a good way to handle expertise is based on the Station o the
target.
a Station 0 target is far easier to kill than a Station 10 with 8
bodyguards. Thus the higher the station as with pay the higher the
expertise should be given.
