I've played them all starting with the basic 3 books in the '70s. You ALSO got exp for coin, but there were points for critters, too. As for CDF, if you can't work it out, just replace it with a P&P critter that's close to the D&D critter in ability or theme. <div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1538697523459_87837"><br clear="none"></div><div id="yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1538697523459_87839">Basically, converting P&P to a more D&D like system seems to take some of the joy out of P&P. P&P awards points kills already to combat experience,and magic experience..
