[Recap]<br>
<br>
From Chion: [Re: Actions]<br>
It is at this point that Chion begins laughing out loud.
He<br>
will continue to laugh as he heads over to where the
trail<br>
has ran to (as if to get under way).<br>
<br>
Still laughing, out loud and purposefully (perhaps even<br>
forced one might say), he will then slip off his horse,<br>
fall in an intentional manner so as not to get too hurt,<br>
and continue laughing on the ground. When asked why he
is<br>
laughing so hard he will reply, "Cetric's had to kill
or<br>
maim nearly thirty warriors." And continue laughing at
the<br>
implied humor of that: being #1 Cetric has pissed off
nearly<br>
30 people to the point where they wanted to kill him; #2<br>
Cetric has only killed 30 people (which by Chion's count
is<br>
extraordinarily low - good for Cetric, but funny); #3
Cetric<br>
obviously used magic to kill warriors, something anyone
in<br>
the party knows is easier than making pie; #4 it doesn't<br>
matter to Chion the reason for a wolf's death, if
something<br>
good can come out of it then so be it - keeping the hide<br>
keeps the spirit of the wolf alive in the user of the
item.<br>
And Chion continues to laugh until they head out.
(Another<br>
reason he is laughing is to balance out all the tension
in<br>
the air, such is his nature)<br>
GM: Ack. Good point on the spirit. But you didn't vocalize
this?<br>
<br>
<br>
----------------------<br>
<br>
From Z'leyra: [Re: Actions]<br>
Z'leyra, shocked at what Cetric said, responds "Most
shaman<br>
NEVER fight folk from their own tribe. Oh yes, you hear<br>
stories of shaman fighting one, maybe two madmen in the
tribe<br>
they serve, but that is a rare exception. That a shaman
fought<br>
thirty nine of his own - SLAYING fourteen and maiming
three<br>
speaks loudly. That thirty nine had REASON to challenge
him<br>
shouts louder yet. That you actually boast of this...I
find<br>
it hard to believe of a Zen'da shaman. Oh, I could believe
it<br>
of a Fierazi, a Helva, Sarghut or Kll'Maun, but a Zen'da?
It<br>
saddens me."<br>
<br>
"Nonetheless, for now we should put our differences behind
us.<br>
We have an enemy that must be dealt with first. So! No<br>
fighting each other until after we have dealt with the<br>
graverobbers!"<br>
<br>
"I realize that it is hard to tell where Cetric is
speaking<br>
for himself or for the spirits. Since trust in Cetric
appears<br>
to be in short supply I make an offer."<br>
<br>
"If you both agree, I will contact the wolf's spirit and
ask<br>
it if feels insulted from the taking of the hide from
the<br>
corpse. I would then ask it what would appease it. If
no<br>
insult is taken Ben'Dar and Cetric have no reason for
this<br>
argument. If appeasement is necessary then Ben'Dar will
accept<br>
my word and do the necessary appeasement."<br>
<br>
"Either way, put this argument behind us!"<br>
GM: Ack. Good suggestion. <br>
<br>
----------------------<br>
<br>
From Strie'bog: [Re: Actions]<br>
[---This should've been in a older update but if not
----]<br>
At the site of the wolves, Strie'bog notes Cetric's
dismay.<br>
After Cetric speaks, and after Ben'dar and Z'leyra's
words,<br>
Strie'bog dismounts and retrives his shovel. "I will
help<br>
you Cetric, as I am fond of wolves as well." With
that,<br>
he starts to dig. To the questioning glances, "The trail
is<br>
already old, and though nature will take care of the
corpses,<br>
it can do the soul good to say good-bye things that hold<br>
meaning for us." Looking at Z'leyra, "would your
heart<br>
not feel saddened by the loss of an egale? Though I do<br>
not hold the bond that you and Cetric hold, and may never<br>
know that wonder, I do have a friend who is a wolf. And<br>
truth be told, there are some sites that freeze my heart<br>
and make tear well up in my eyes. The gods though have<br>
given us ways to ease these pains, even in small
actions."<br>
He will then help Cetric bury the wolves.<br>
<br>
Afterwards, as the party moves out, Strei'bog will pull
out<br>
his balalaika, start to play gently, and tell a story.<br>
[-----Old stuff but may have accidently not been
included---]<br>
<br>
To distract, and reduce some tension, Strie'bog will tell
the<br>
story posted earlier.<br>
<br>
After the story, he will look around the gathering while
moving<br>
to look at both Ben'dar and Cetric.<br>
<br>
"My father was a holy man from far to the east. As I
grew, we<br>
talked of many things. One is the confusion of words.
We<br>
speak, but many times the words do not match our inner
meaning.<br>
Meaning that even we have problems seeing or hearing."
"Once I<br>
came to my father, saying that another apprentice had<br>
dishonored me. We talked, and he heard my story. He
then<br>
said to me, 'you have confused honor with pride my
son.'"<br>
Strie'bog will let that statment hang for a minute.
"Each<br>
tribe has its own custom, but as a people I have seen that
the<br>
Zen'da respect life." Looking at Ben'dar, "you will
recall<br>
that I challanged Cetric. I did this because there was
a<br>
breach in hospitality, a breach in the laws that bind us<br>
together. Friendship, and even trust, could not grow if
this<br>
act was never challanged." Turning to Cetric, "as I
mentioned,<br>
it did not matter the outcome, but in the outcome, you
have<br>
learned that even the one who appears the weakest of our
party<br>
is one still to be reckoned with." Looking at
Ben'dar.<br>
<br>
"I have grown to respect you Ben'dar, so I ask, look deep
in<br>
your heart. Will your renown, the respect of your
friends,<br>
grow from fighting Cetric? From killing him? Will you
feel<br>
better about yourself?" He waits for the answer, and
then<br>
walks over to Cetric, "the customs of your tribe confuse
me,<br>
but I am not of your people. You heard my story, and I
have<br>
seen different ways of honoring the spirits, giving them
the<br>
respect that they deserve. Let the spirits have their
say,<br>
and find some way of rebuilding the trust that has been<br>
muddied."<br>
GM: Ack. Excellent words and diplomacy. Something like
the<br>
above could not be done in a table game with such flair.<br>
Which is one reason I like PBEMs you can plan your words<br>
well. :) Points fow role playing! Especially fits in<br>
with how Caladan explains the misunderstanding of words<br>
(see below) :). <br>
<br>
----------------------<br>
<br>
From Ben'dar: [Re: Actions]<br>
GM: Repeat text removed. But in Ben'dar's post on list.<br>
<br>
Ben'Dar looks confused at this, almost as if, in his
mind,<br>
the terms 'honor' and 'pride' are absolutely equivalent.<br>
He shrugs his shoulders and continues to glare at Cetric.<br>
<br>
At this, Ben'Dar's grim mask of anger quickly transforms
into<br>
a vicious grin as a gleam of anticipation for battle
leaps<br>
back into his eyes. He nods once, emphatically, in answer
to<br>
all of Striebog's questions, but still he does not shift
his<br>
gaze from Cetric.<br>
<br>
With difficulty, Ben'Dar restrains himself from urging
Tef'wo<br>
to trample the man in front of him, quickly putting into
the<br>
back of his mind the intense desire he has for battle at
this<br>
moment.<br>
<br>
His gaze never leaving Cetric's face, he says stiffly,
"My<br>
friend Z'leyra speaks wisdom, as always." He glances
quickly<br>
at Z'leyra, "I agree." He says nothing more, but
swings his<br>
eyes back to glare at Cetric as he waits for Z'leyra to do
her<br>
magic.<br>
GM: Ack. The last 2 paragraphs were sent to Alex in email.<br>
Talking to him in ICQ I learned this but did't get a CC
copy.<br>
Since it moves the update forward I had him sent me a
copy<br>
so I could see. Hope its ok to post here since it is
public<br>
stuff anyways in terms of a public reply. <br>
-----------------------------------------------------------------<br>
[New Stuff]<br>
<br>
Octaqi 18, in the 163rd Year [TH]<br>
[Meanwhile somewhere on the plains]<br>
Time: Roughly 11:35am] [Day 48 of Trip]<br>
<br>
[The tension is thick it can be cut with a sword. Even
flying<br>
overhead birds seem to quiet as they sense the distress.
It<br>
is quickly broken when Chion begins to laugh. From his
large<br>
frame his laugh is rather booming. Everyone looks at him<br>
as his horse twists and he seems to fall off his horse all<br>
the while laughting.]<br>
<br>
Balrog: "What is so funny?"<br>
<br>
[Chion replies as above. Eyes dart back to Cetric. <br>
<br>
Caladan: "Compared to some of our counts that is a low<br>
amount but the plains don't see as many foes as we<br>
may see, Chion. There is nothing funny about killing<br>
another person."<br>
<br>
[Cetric does a slight subtle nod so subtle only a couple<br>
people notice (Unali, Z'leyra and Kasha from their
angles).<br>
He then gives a slight smirk at Chion's laugh which most<br>
everyone sees.]<br>
<br>
[Upon hearing Z'leyra speak Cetric stands further straight<br>
up and stares at Z'leyra. The smirk fades to a emotionless<br>
face. He allows her to finish.]<br>
<br>
Cetric: "I am NO Fierazi! I do not boast of my skill
or<br>
the death I had to do."<br>
<br>
[Caladan nods and gives a small grin.]<br>
<br>
Caladan: "He's right Z'leyra. Fact is its a Zen'da
custom<br>
not to boast of your deeds unless you are trying to become<br>
a Sha of some form. Even then its rare. The custom tends<br>
to be to have others speak of your deeds. He did that
with<br>
Rin speaking for him. To speak of your own deeds speaks<br>
to the spirit of your pride which can bring further
problems.<br>
Secondly, you misunderstood his comments. He said 'He
Dropped'<br>
them. He never spoke of them being from the Ga'Fel tribe.<br>
In fact I'm sure some were from Ga'fel. But I'd suspect
most<br>
came from other tribes or raiders on the plains or river
seeking<br>
our resources."<br>
<br>
Cetric [Nodding and a slight grin forms] "Sundancer is
correct."<br>
<br>
Caladan: "In fact challenges are not considered to be murder
or<br>
shameful for the Zen'da in most cases. There may be the<br>
rare case where a Warrior challenges a warrior who can't
defend<br>
himself due to age or other problems. That is shameful.
But<br>
a lodge rite is the challenge on most tribes and clans of
the<br>
plains."<br>
<br>
Cetric: "Again correct. For someone who turned his back on
our<br>
people he has not forgotten our ways."<br>
<br>
Caladan: [with a bit of anger in his voice] "I never
intended<br>
to turn my back! But my ways are not the Zen'da ways.<br>
I saw what the others thought of me when I left and
learned<br>
spirit words [even now he keeps his words in a Zen'da
fashion<br>
rather than saying magic] it did not mix well. To be son
of<br>
the chief brings responsibilities I did not want. It<br>
would also bring problems to my father if I stayed. He is<br>
a leader that doesn't need the problems. We...have
settled<br>
this issue the other night. We are at peace with that<br>
decision. You should be as well."<br>
<br>
[Cetric thinks it over then replies.]<br>
<br>
Cetric: "Fine. I can see why you left in that
case."<br>
<br>
[Kasha leans to Balrog and whispers]<br>
<br>
Kasha: "Probably didn't hurt Cetric's position to leave
as<br>
well. Giving him more power."<br>
<br>
[Balrog nods.]<br>
<br>
[Cetric then goes back to Z'leyra.]<br>
<br>
Cetric: "You can speak to the spirits directly? Very
few<br>
shamans can do this on the plains. We communicate with<br>
them through dance, chants, meditation and smoke
rituals."<br>
[He considers it then continues] "I agree. I speak
for<br>
the spirits before I speak for the people. That is my<br>
position in life."<br>
<br>
GM: Was going to post the story as the party continues on<br>
the trail but since Strie'bog wanted it posted here I'll<br>
go ahead and do it. It fits in with the mood at the<br>
start of the event. <br>
<br>
From Strie'bog<br>
In man's infancy, the animals and people lived together<br>
peaceably and talked with each other. But then mankind<br>
began to multiply rapidly, crowding the animals. In need<br>
of food and clothing, man began to hunt their former<br>
friends, butchering them wholesale for the skin, fur and<br>
meat. But they killed more than was needed, claiming
that<br>
they needed to store up for bad seasons.<br>
<br>
The animals became angry at this treatment, and their
appeals<br>
to their former friends went unheard and unanswered. So<br>
they resolved to punish their unfaithful friends.<br>
<br>
The Chief of the bear tribe, Old White Bear, called
together<br>
his people. Chief Little Deer called together the deer<br>
tribe, and Old Grey Wolf called together the wolf tribe.<br>
They decided that the hunters no longer respected their<br>
ancient friendship, and that those who killed without
asking<br>
pardon should be afflicted with painful diseases.<br>
<br>
Chief Old White Bear vowed to deliver wasting diseases to<br>
those who killed members of his tribe. Chief Little Deer<br>
vowed to make the joints of the offending hunter become<br>
swollen and painful. Chief Grey Wolf vowed to take the<br>
site of any who slaughtered his kin.<br>
<br>
Chief Little Deer went to the people of plains and forest<br>
and said, "From now on, your hunters must first offer
a<br>
prayer to the people of Bear, Deer and Wolf, before you<br>
kill them. You must ask pardon of him and his tribe, and<br>
say with truth of heart, that you are forced only by the<br>
hunger needs of your tribe to hunt and kill. Otherwise,<br>
a terrible disease will come to you."<br>
<br>
When a bear is slain by a hunter, Chief Old White Bear
will<br>
run to the spot and ask the spirit of the slain, "did
you<br>
hear the hunter's prayer for pardon?"<br>
<br>
When a deer is slain by a hunter, Chief Little Deer will
run<br>
to the spot and ask the spirit of the slain, "did you
hear<br>
the hunter's prayer for pardon?"<br>
<br>
When a wolf is slain by a hunter, Chief Old Grey Wolf
will<br>
run to the spot and ask the spirit of the slain, "did
you<br>
hear the hunter's prayer for pardon?"<br>
<br>
If the reply is yes, then all is well, and the chiefs
will<br>
return to their home. But if the answer is no, then the<br>
offended chief will track the hunter to his lodge and
strike<br>
with dreadful diseases. Chief Old White Bear will cause<br>
the flesh of the hunter to waste away. Chief Little Deer<br>
will cause the joints of the hunter to swell and grow<br>
painful, so they can never hunt again. Chief Old Grey<br>
Wolf will steal into the lodge and spit in the eyes of
the<br>
hunter, taking from them their sight.<br>
<br>
The fish and reptiles heard of Bear, Deer and Wolf’s
decision,<br>
and called a council of their own. They decided that
they<br>
too would punish those who would kill without respect.
They<br>
would haunt their dreams with vision of serpents twining<br>
around them, and eating them alive.<br>
<br>
Man did not listen at first, and so many were struck down
by<br>
disease and terrible visions. They pleaded with their<br>
medicine men to banish these dreams and diseases. The
wise<br>
men knew that the hunters should honor the slain, but<br>
arrogance has always been the folly of man.<br>
<br>
The friendly plants though heard what the animals had
decided,<br>
and were disheartened that the former friends would fight
so.<br>
They knew that the punishments sent by the animals would
be<br>
as fatal as the arrows of man. Few would be left to
learn<br>
the lessons if all were afflicted, so the friendly plants<br>
made a pact to counter the curses of the animals, to give<br>
man a chance to redeem his folly. Each tree, shrub,
herb,<br>
grass and moss agreed to furnish a cure for one of the<br>
diseases named by the animals and insects, for by this<br>
time, each animal tribe had named a curse against man.<br>
<br>
These cures the friendly plants revealed in dreams to the<br>
medicine men, and further told the medicine men to
consult<br>
with plant if in doubt about an ailment. The friendly
plants<br>
though stressed that the medicine men must teach their
people<br>
to respect all life, and honor all that is taken for food<br>
and clothing. Only in that way would their curative
powers<br>
remain potent.<br>
<br>
To this day, the friendly plants always suggest the
proper<br>
remedy for any of man's diseases.<br>
<br>
[As Strie'bog tells his story he continues to shovel the<br>
final amounts of dirt. The party and the other Zen'da<br>
are awe struck by the words and intrigued. No one speaks<br>
or interrupts him. After he finishes Cetric ponders this<br>
for half a minute. Two of the Zen'da warriors move their<br>
horses away from the grave as if they fear disease to hit<br>
them any second. But no one else moves including Cetric.<br>
The party notes this to be a sign of intelligence?]<br>
<br>
Cetric: "You speak wisdom. I have never heard of such a
tale.<br>
but it makes sense. Now I understand why my kind, the
Shaman,<br>
exist on the plains. Very interesting."<br>
<br>
[Tension seems to leave his body as Cetric ponders this
further<br>
for more understanding.]<br>
<br>
Farseeker: "A nice story. Where did you learn
it?"<br>
<br>
[Strie'bog explains from his mother. He then climbs out of<br>
the grave as he reaches the top he notices several bugs<br>
on his tunic that got on him somehow.]<br>
<br>
Cetric: "When I moved the wolves they got on me. They
will<br>
bite but they are harmless it seems. They bit me once<br>
or twice."<br>
<br>
[Strie'bog brushes them off his sleeve before they bite
though.<br>
He then moves toward Cetric and gets between him and
Ben'dar<br>
who is about 15 feet away. He gives his speech above.
Cetric<br>
listens to this.]<br>
<br>
Cetric: "Your words are strong" [Strie'bog understands
this<br>
term strong to not be with anger but rather through strong<br>
or convincing matter] "and are understood. Again you<br>
surprise me with your wisdom. I will let the spirits have<br>
their say if Ben'dar is willing. "<br>
<br>
[He turns and grabs the fallen shovel and continues to throw<br>
sand on the grave to finish it off which is now almost
complete.<br>
But folks notice he is still wearing his drum but does not<br>
keep his back from Ben'dar.]<br>
<br>
[As the tension seems to leave Cetric as he continues his<br>
silent burial rite and begins a very low chant of words
hard<br>
to hear Ben'dar continues to glare and think over the
words.]<br>
<br>
[Ben'dar then turns to Z'leyra and tells her he agrees to<br>
her plan. Cetric looks up and stops in mid-shovel. He<br>
nods and stares at Ben'dar then quickly resumes the<br>
shovels. He continues his chant.]<br>
<br>
[Z'leyra dismounts and prepares some of her gear on the
saddle.<br>
She looks at Ben'dar and then prepares mentally her spells.<br>
The others mingle and talk among themselves as to what has<br>
occured. Even s small bet between Kasha and Balrog on who<br>
would've won the fight is placed quietly.]<br>
<br>
[Cetric leaves the grave and stands near Z'leyra. He
continues<br>
to chant and is distracting to Z'leyra but she figures he
is,<br>
in his own way, doing his own spells. Maybe to help or
support<br>
her own spells. She casts her orient trance then a
detection<br>
spell to search for the wolf spirit. But it fails to find
the<br>
spirit. She casts a larger detection to go 160 feet around
her.<br>
She detects the spirit little over a hundred feet from the<br>
grave. Cetric continues his chant and it seems to call or<br>
summon the spirit toward them. Z'leyra then casts her<br>
communicate spells. She calls out to the spirit in a
strange<br>
tongue. She calls for the wolf. Unsure if its around she<br>
asks its attention. But then Cetric grunts in his chant<br>
to indicate the spirit is only a few feet away. Z'leyra
turns<br>
in a half circle hoping to 'see' the spirit and speaks out<br>
loud. But nothing is seen.]<br>
<br>
From Z'lyera <br>
[...And she would try to be diplomatic with the wolf's
spirit.]<br>
Z'lyera: "Greetings honorable wolf. A question has arisen
that<br>
we hope you might solve. Ben'dar seems to believe that it<br>
honors you and himself to take and wear the fur from the<br>
body you used to inhabit. Cetric appears to think that<br>
Ben'dar doing so is an insult to you. An insult that must<br>
be appeased. Please, honorable wolf, tell me. Are you<br>
honored? Are you insulted?"<br>
<br>
<If insulted> "What would appease you? Do you wish
you fur<br>
buried with the body? Do you wish Ben'dar to say he is
sorry<br>
and to ask for your forgiveness?"<br>
<br>
[A distant ghostly voice is heard only by Z'leyra and maybe<br>
Cetric but it isn't known for sure? It rpplies]<br>
<br>
Wolf: "Yes...Yes...kill...head hurt...kill...body not
do<br>
what wanted...why...WHY!?...fur...no hurt....head...kill<br>
injury!.."<br>
<br>
Z'leyra: "We hope to kill the man who forced your body to
not<br>
do what you wanted."<br>
<br>
Wolf: "Yes...YES!....kill"
<br>
<br>
Z'leyra: "He used magic against you. We will take that
magic<br>
from him and prevent him from ever doing it again."<br>
<br>
[A pause as the wolf doesn't seem to understand all those
words...]<br>
<br>
Z'leyra: "So is it okay for Ben'dar to keep your
fur?"<br>
<br>
Wolf: "Body dead....skin no need..."<br>
<br>
Z'leyra: "Okay. Thank you. We will go after the bad man as
soon<br>
as your body is buried. May your spirit have joy."<br>
<br>
[Other voices are heard..maybe the other wolves..but
distant..<br>
No other understandable words are heard. Cetric seems to<br>
nod as if he is listening as well but continues to nod even<br>
well after the conversation ends and the spells are ended.]<br>
<br>
[Z'leyra stands up fully and looks around. Then back at<br>
Cetric who finishes a chant of his own. Cetric ends and<br>
stops beating his drum.]<br>
<br>
[Z'leyra conveys the conversation. But on the part where
the<br>
wolf tells there is no need for the skin she looks at<br>
Cetric and phrases it differently. She explains the wolf<br>
feels the skin will help it (the spirit) avenge the abuse<br>
of their bodies by letting ben'dar wear it in battle.
Ben'dar<br>
is a good warrior it will be okay. Course this is a
partial<br>
half truth for Cetric's sake. Z'leyra understands that to<br>
tell Cetric what the wolf really thinks could shatter years<br>
and generations of shamanic tradition and teaching. It<br>
would be like telling a faithful priest who has been in the<br>
church for generations in his famiy there is no god. It<br>
would shatter their world view. that single fact could do<br>
more harm to Cetric but even more harm to the Zen'da people<br>
from this knowledge. Cetric listens and nods. His face<br>
doesn't change which indicates he didn't hear the spirit<br>
but maybe held it in place for the conversation. Taht<br>
is good.]<br>
<br>
[Cetric turns and walks back to the grave. He begins to<br>
finish the shoveling of the last few shovel fulls. While<br>
doing so he looks up and quickly says.]<br>
<br>
Cetric: "The spirit allows you to wear it. I suspect
though<br>
it won't be ready by the time we battle. But maybe the<br>
spirits won't know this. If you value your skin though<br>
you will do it out of sight of me. It is a personal<br>
insult to me to do otherwise. This is not a threat but<br>
a situation you must understand."<br>
<br>
[With no tone of anger he says that and finishes up the<br>
grave. He then hands the shovel back to Strie'bog and<br>
thanks him. He mounts his horse and the party continues<br>
to move on after he, Z'leyra and Strie'bog say a few words<br>
of prayer or blessing over the wolf graves.]<br>

Next update Monday...<br>
<br>
Actions? Comments?<br>
<br>
Ok. Short update. Had some eye aches today due to Allergy
stuff.<br>
So didn't do a big one. Monday the party will move on and<br>
the tracking will continue. If theres actions or comments<br>
let me know. I'll probably work on the update for monday on<br>
Sunday evening mainly in the areas of some maps and notes but<br>
can still take posts through monday as normal. I will likely<br>
then post it as normal. Won't spell check this one as doing<br>
as little computer work (text wise) as i can tonight. :)<br>
<br>
Funny. This scene wasn't planned. But it turned out great.<br>
I mean character interaction was good and we learned a few<br>
more things about each other. <br>
