[Recap]
From Kell: [Re: Actions]
Kell thanks Tor, the man that helped him, and buys the next round.
[Goal - make a friend of Tor, he helped Kell in a tight spot, and
Kell likes to help people who help him.]
He hangs around gambling and listening, even getting up one time
to use the bathroom, when/if it appears he can learn more. He'll
discuss this tavern with Tor as much as possible, learning all he
can.
Assuming not much else happens, he'll leave with Tor.
When they leave, Kell assumes he is followed, checking often and
taking a very winding route out of this area. If he can spot Will
or Kiet, he' ll signal that he is ok, and that he may be
followed.
[Dang this is a sparse response. Sad, really. Scott, beef it up
please :) Now to work on "that other game". ]
GM: Ack.
From Kell: [Re: Actions]
"What do you have tonight? Anything fresh?" replies Kell to the
barkeep. He'll keep the talk with the barkeep short and stay
there only as long as necessary. Of course he wants to hear the
leader's decision about tonight, but won't up the risk anymore
tonight. His luck already helped once, no need to tempt fate
again. There may not be much more Kell can learn tonight, not
without following the man if he leaves. That's a bit beyond what
this group hoped to accomplish by investigating the tavern. Kell
wishes he had some backup inside, Kiet would fit well. Another
man to discuss things with, another set of eyes.
When he sits back down, Kell will pay better attention to the
cards, but still discuss things. Causally he asks Tor about the
mens' uniforms, "Tor, why are those men wearing what could be
uniforms? They don't look like the normal thugs that run these
types of places."
GM: Ack. Did I miss something? Who's wearing uniforms? I'll have
to a bit of cover up on this one. :)
From Will: [Re: Move on vote]
That fine with me
GM: Ack.
From Raban: [Re: Actions]
If there's nothing more to learn, just move it along. Add the
few hints, then go. I'm fine keeping it moving.
I vote we end the tavern as quickly as possible, to get the whole
party involved. I wasn't sure what there was to learn, which is
why Kell did what he did. (I considered having Kell follow the
leader if he leaves, but won't.)
GM: Ack.
From John Hooten: [Re: Actions]
oops forgot to change to list
Just remember that in order to do anything secretive in an area
you must pay off any organized criminal organization or they will
inform on you. Thus they will know a lot about things in their
areas.
This is also true of secret mages as they will turn in rogue
elements simply because they draw attention to all mages. Either
join or leave as you will be next on the execution list.
And the criminals must also know of the mages and get paid enough
to keep it secret, of course they also have threats to cut those
costs. And going back on your word is bad for business.
That said, there is a lot of information that could be gained
here as well as a lot of risks. I personally do not mind it takes
time as long as it is done right Do not just abort it
That all applies to our group too, if we have not paid for silence
or intimidated them, likely we have been informed on
GM: Ack. Good comments.
From Kiet: [Re: Actions]
Kiet is fine with just about anything to speed things up. I
thought this was an important sidelight, and was hoping for some
action...but the idea was to watch Kell...and try to keep him
from getting skewered.
GM: Ack. It is an important thing but seems like slow moving.
I was willing to do either way. I don't mind. Less
action means less work for me. :) Its good for the plot
arc but only a minor thing that can be made important.
From Fremea: [Re: Actions]
I am fine with it speeding up. I was going to have Fremea take
out the guard and see if she can find Unali. Then, have her
(Unali) get any papers that are important. Other than that she
(Fremea) will take what she can that is valuable.
GM: Ack.
From Kell: [Re: Actions]
Ha'Kell manages to completely unravel all the mysteries shrouded
in this tavern, including names, locations, dates, monies,
activities for the past 6 months, what it all has to do with the
Vong, where the Vong are and will be, even their master plan all
laid out nice and cozy rather line a Bond Villian explaining
everything to him just before Bond is placed on the conveyor
belt with the laser/saw/drill/makeup-applicator at the end to
destory him yet Bond, er Kell, manages to escape and foil the
entire plan with bubble gum, duct tape, and a pocket knife, oh
wait, that's MacGuyver not Bond, well still, you get my meaning,
it's cleaned up nicely.
GM: Ack. Don't forget the bond girl. :) Sadly these wenches have
missing teeth so not up to par.

[New Stuff]
[Augado 5th, 1634TH]
[Location: Middle Katai Plains]
[ Pamau Province, Pamau City]
[Time: 10:40pm]
"What do you have tonight? Anything fresh?" replies Kell to
the barkeep.
"Roasted chicken and ham is fresh. We stop cooking very soon
though." The barkeep takes another mug and turns it upside down
to pour some brown ale from a jug in it. It almost smells like
a special brew than the standard ale. Probably a specialty ale.
Kell considers his choice and pretends to have interest in the
ale being poured. He tries to hear the leader and what must be
his aide.
"...I doubt they will do anything to us. If our friend is
missing or doesn't show up then doesn't mean they don't need us."
The leader crosses his arms as he scans the tables.
"But if Nom is dead or caught we don't know who to deal with.
His friends might think we did it and take this place out."
The aide tries to whisper but in the noise of the place the
tone is heard even a few feet away.
"No. They wouldn't dare cease our relationship. They need
us as much as we may need them." The leader waves to someone
at a table likely knowing him.
Kell decides the chicken sounds good and it does smell fairly
well from the kitchen in the back. He orders the food and then
turns around as if to leave the bar area.
From Kell's side vision he notices a man approach the leader.
They whisper and then the man returns from the back somewhere.
"Our guest is awake. I will tend to him. Even if they attack
this place we'll be safe on the second floor." The leader then
turns and heads to the back.
From outside in the alley to the south next to the furniture
factory Will continues to try the windows. Suddenly Kiet hears
a bang and then another bang. He quickly draws his dagger and
turns to gauge the darkness. But nothing is seen in this bloody
blackness. He goes north to the street and peers around the
corner. The noise is coming from the tavern. He tries to
squint but sees nothing in this darkness. If only he had Elven
or Faerry eyes or a bloody torch. The bang continues 3 more
times. Then Kiet realizes the noise is coming from a window.
He tries to home in on the noise with his eyes and ears. It
seems to be from the third floor. The shutter seems to be
banging up against the window. But there is no wind to do that.
What could be going on? A signal?
From the leader's office Fremea peeks over the desk. She
swore she heard noise and someone coming inside. But no wait.
It seems to be more distant. What is that noise? She
stalks to the door and listens. Yes. It coming from inside
the hall and sounds like a tree hitting a window?
The guard hears the banging noise as well and looks left and
right. He grumbles and grumbles. When the noise continues
a 4th bang he shrugs and heads west to the intersection going
west and south. He glances down and sees nothing. "This
place is breaking down.." He slowly moves south down the hallway.
The guard gets to the end of the hall where it goes east and
rounds the room he is guarding. He notices the window is open
for some reason. As he steps forward from his left the shadow
of darkness suddenly becomes alive. From his side vision the
darkness jumps at him.
The guard twists and turns just in time to see the bulk that
is Unali leap at him. With her dark clothing it looked as if
the darkness itself formed into a person. Before the man
can bring up his sword she stabs with her left hand dagger into
the lower abdomen of the man knowing his armor is heavy. The
blade penetrates deep into just above his waist line. But
her right hand dagger, the magical dagger, slices forward then
draws back to slice the man's throat. It doesn't matter what
damage was done to his lower region the blood loss to his neck
and damage is critical. The guard drops the sword, eyes bulging
and glances at Unali in disbelief. With one hand he grabs his
neck as if to stop the bleeding but it is too late. Within
another second he falls to his knees and then to the ground
face down.
Fremea hears the heavy thump and backs away from the door.
Then the noise stops. Breathing so lightly she pulls the
door open to hear outside into the hallway. Then she hears
noise and realizes it coming close. She closes the door
and runs back to the desk to hide again.
From the ground Kiet notices the window is open. There is
very faint light as if staring at a room where a candle is
on the other side of the room. A flicker of shadow and something
like movement was seen. But after that the vision blurs and
he isn't sure what just happened.
Unali drags the body further into the middle of the hallway
behind the very room he should be guarding. She wipes her
dagger on his clothing and begins to move. As she moves
she knows these thugs are allies of the Vong. Allies who
want to see power in this empire. They may not want to destroy
the empire but certainly the Vong does. This means the brigade
folks must die and she has no concern doing so.
Downstairs the aide turns and heads to the messenger which
is two seats down from Kell. The aide hands a pack to the
messenger. "Standard delivery." The messenger nods but goes
back to his drink.
Kell returns to the table where Tor is. Tor is spreading
out a deck of cards and looking around. "Decent food but
the fruit can be old." Tor grins and gathers up the cards.
Kell feels torn to head to follow the leader and watch the
messenger and flee this place. But yet this man seems to be
calm in the face of this danger. Actually compared to others
with grim faces and worried looks this man is too calm. There
is something odd with this man. Kell tosses the table dice
around and gambles on what to do. The dice seem to dictate
that staying here with this man might work out. He hopes the
fate and the dice aren't rigged.
Will finally finds a window that is loose. He places a dagger
under the window sill and tries to pry it up. But it is taking
too long. He grunts and groans.
Kiet returns to help Will still confused by what just occurred.
As Kiet approaches, Zep suddenly wakes and stands. He panics
and begins to move down the wall confused. But the alley is
so dark he runs into Will and is forced down a bit. Kiet
tries to shove him to the wall before Zep can scream and draw
attention. Kiet brings up a rope and the lasso end slips
around the neck of the poor guy. Kiet pulls it as Will tries
to grapple the crazed and desperate man. The lasso pulls
tight and the man begins to gasp for air.
As Kell and Tor begin a quick card game, Kell wonders about
the dress the brigade members seem to wear. It isn't quite
a uniform but it seems to have that non descript vest and
half sleeve thing. It covers up their tats but they dress
like wharf rats and they tend to have no sleeves. "Tor, why are
those men wearing what could be uniforms? They don't look like
the normal thugs that run these types of places."
Tor glances over his shoulder at the bar and bouncer. "These
folks aren't the standard thugs you are right. I hear stories.
Stuff like this group was new and formed up quickly. Taken
from this place and several vital areas of the city quickly from
those who were there. They have fingers in gambling, some trade
and other vices."
Upstairs, Fremea climbs under the desk and draws her dagger.
As she climbs under her head hits the back left area of the
desk with a thud. The desk front is low and her feet might
show but in this darkness one would have to be looking for it.
Suddenly her good ears hear the door open slowly. She stops
breathing and waits. The noise of footsteps is heard on
the fine carpet. She waits two seconds then another. Then
a form comes around to the back of the desk now facing her.
She sees two legs and black boots. She knows if this man
found her it is now or never to kill him. A good groin upper
slice will do some damage. As she creeps closer to stab she
notices the person bend down and open the desk drawers. Why
would the man be doing that instead of sitting down or looking
under for her?
Back in the alley the lasso cuts off Zep's breathing and
he slides up againnt the window Will was working on. But the
slide is more a slam and his head hits the window with a loud
crack. Then Zep slumps to the ground out yet again. Will and
Kiet look to each other breathing hard from the adrenaline rush.
The look around and hope it wasn't heard but the night air
is only full of faint cricket noises.
Will touches the window to grab his dagger wedged into the
windowsill and notices the pane is now cracked. Zep must've
cracked it when he hit the window. Will shrugs. Tracing
carefully with his finger he finds the top of the window and
finds a spot to quickly tap. The small section of window
falls inward with a tink. But the window doesn't break to
pieces. He quietly thanks Zep for the help. Then he reaches
into the window pane hole and uses two fingers to lift the
lock. With some ease so not to break it further he slides
the window up. Kiet climbs inside first and then both men
pull the hapless Zep inside followed by Will.
Fremea peers out and up to see who is doing what she was
just doing. As she does she is seen by the person and
both jump back. Then Fremea notices it is only Unali and
grins. Unali shakes her head knowing she could've been
skewered by the wee Faerry.
Fremea begins to quickly go over what she found and
Unali begins to scan the documents. Fremea is glad to
have some backup now.
Tor waves a girl over. "What's the buy in tonight dear?"
"Right now 15 Silver. N'zoth is at the table." The girl
says and moves on with a tray of drinks.
"N'zoth is a good card player. So good stakes. " Tor glances
to Kell and places down his final hand. Kell grins at the
first win in this quick card game. Tor continues, "Down here
the petty games occur. Upstairs on the second floor the real
high stakes games come in. Got enough to buy into a real game?"
Kell has two gold enough to buy in yes. But he knows he
isn't here to gamble. But then again if he can get the excuse
to move upstairs. Kell grins and nods.
"Let's go then. Maybe get some Fij dust as well, eh?" Tor
grins as he waves Kell toward the bar area.
Kell has no idea what this Fij dust is but it doesn't sound
like itching powder.
Inside the dark furniture factory Zep is hauled to the side
where a large cutting table is. Will begins to slap Zep to
reawake him and to ensure he isn't dead. Will was right based
on the smell from Zep's pants the man only soiled himself and
fainted. The poor guy is having one heck of a night. The
man quickly wakes up again with the noose to his neck.
Zep this time remains calm and tries to see where he is and
who is being so kind to him now. But he can't see the face of
Kiet or Will much less 3 feet in front of him. He tries to
gasp with fresh air to his lungs. "I've already been beat
up once this night. Don't you guys have some protocol that
says only beat up a guy once?"
Kiet grunts as he glances around the factory. This place
makes him a bit nervous. There is bound to be nails, saws
and other dangerous blades. Walking around blind could be
a very bad thing. But Kiet finds Zep to be funny.
Will knows both he and Kiet won't be able to rush to Kell's
help here. But maybe Zep knows more intel they can use.
"No? Not my debt again?" Zep becomes a bit more confident
and reaches up to his noose. Kiet yanks on it to ensure he
is still there. Zep gets the idea. "If not....then..who...
where am..." Zep pauses and Will can almost hear the wheels
in his brain thinking this through. The man squirms again.
"Fagan? Is that you. I ...I told your mother I didn't know
she was 13...she said she was 16...honest!"
Will grunts in disgust and grits his teeth. So this man
is also wanted by some others. This man likely in his 30s
having his way with a child. He should skin the man now.
"She said her sister wanted to learn how..." Zep gasps as
Kiet pulls the rope. Annoyed at this perverted man he leans
down and slaps the man. "The girl was 10 and just wanted
to watch...please...don't kill me!"
Kiet slaps the sicko again. This time Will asks the man
about the tavern and how best to get inside.
"What? Huh? You're not Fagan?" Zep's brain must be working
in melt down mode by now. "The tavern? Huh?" Kiet slaps the
man and pulls the rope to remind him. "Okay! Okay! The password
is Bronto this week. That'll get you inside. I only deal
with the first two floors. The first has gambling areas and
the kitchen. The second has some public rooms for the drugs
they sell. They have this fine dust from Teos that makes you
see..." Kiet slaps the man to get him back on track. "Owww!
That hurt. The second floor has some other rooms for time
with the girls.." Zep flinches trying to avoid a slap. "The
girls of age the..staff!"
By now Kell and Tor have gone to the back area. This
small hallway goes back a bit but not far. It seems the
door behind bar itself goes to the kitchen area. As Tor
get to the one door on the right the two men enter a small
room with stairs going up.
On the second floor both men open the door to see a guard
at the side of the door. "Come to play. Is the Dust good
tonight?"
The guard nods and points to the right or west down the hall.
Tor seems to hesitate briefly and then nods thanks. He directs
Kell to the west to the first door. He opens it up and both
men walk into a well lit area.
Inside is a counter almost like a shop with a girl in her
20s behind it. There are numerous shelves and a couple of
cabinets. "Your pleasure?" The girl asks and smiles. "A
girl or some natural entertainment?"
"Friend here wants to try the dust." Tor says.
The girl nods and turns to grab a few things on a cabinet.
Kell can't believe this man. A drug user? Wait he said
friend not himself. Kell almost starts to protest but wants
to see what Tor is up to.
The girl turns with a small plate of purple blue dust. She
hands it to Kell. "Place it on my tab? Tor Keeth."
The girl nods and goes to make a note in the ledger.
Tor leads the bewildered Half-elf to a door on the right
in this tiny room. It leads to another room which is a bit
darker. there is a couch and several chairs. A small table
has a few candles and it is dim in here. Tor places Kell
onto the couch and taps his shoulder. "Just sniff is slowly."
But Tor begins to glance around. There is another person
a poor person it looks like slumped back with feet spread out
and arms in his lap. His face is back a bit and sweat is on
his face. He is mumbling a few things.
Tor shrugs. "Listen. Try it. I hear its good. I will see
about getting us a girl to watch us gamble."
Upstairs Unali continues to scan the documents. Most are
typical business junk with ingoing and outgoing numbers of
supplies and sales. She soon realizes one ledger is full of
shipments from the south jungles for something she hasn't heard
in years. The Dust is used by Shamans down in the jungles to
hallucinate but it can get extreme. Unali hasn't heard of
a major drug problem in this region for years. If the scum
are bringing this stuff back in they deserve to die. The first
to hit are the poor farmer kids then the families. When
Fremea shows her the bowl of dust she nods and explains that
is what it is. She explains as she scans documents that
dust is a distraction and if the party is to win it should
be avoided.
"I've never been on the third floor!" Zep says quickly
as Kiet draws some blood from a soft skin crawl with his
dagger. Kiet sighs and begins to believe him. It is
probably a restricted area. Kiet realizes Fremea is likely
in that restricted area now.
"Look...I don't know who you are but the place is bad. They
have at least a dozen men in the place at any one time. The
two of you will never be able to rob them." Zep pleads for
them to listen. "Let me go and I can get you inside."
Will smiles, so Zep thinks they are here to rob the place.
Will asks what is to rob.
Zep lowers his voice as if in a whisper. "I hear there is
a room with their treasure. The stories say enough to buy
a fleet of ships."
Kell realizes that Tor is taken a bit more time than he
should. Kell doesn't want to try this stuff. He listens
to see if he can hear them talking in the other room. The
other man looks around as if dazed. He sees Kell and snorts
and wipes sweat from his nose. "You....you don't want it
man?...don't waste it man..."
Kell stands and hands the plate to the man. The man quickly
begins to sniff it with a finger and his nose to the plate. The
man then drops the plate to the carpet and looks up grinning with
yellow teeth. "Thanks man..." Kell pats the man as he watches
the purple dust around the man's lips. Poor guy must be really
desperate to be here or the dust must be really good.
Fremea pops her head back from the window. She tried to look
out to see where the others went. Now even Zep is gone. That
might not be so good. Then she recalls something. Her head
hits the top of the windowsill and brings back the memory of
hitting the side of the desk when she was hiding. It sounded
odd. She crawls under to investigate. She grins when she
realizes there is a small pocket niche of wood. Using her
dagger she pries it away to reveal a small cubby hole in to
the wood of the desk about the size of a couple ink quills.
Reaching out she finds a simple key.
Unali has found a good set of documents to steal. There
are ledgers on shipments and which cities they are going to.
There are also payments sent to other cities. She finds that
odd if this is the headquarters. But it must be other cities
where other groups are setup. Addresses and city info will
be enough to take them down.
Kell enters the drug store room and finds the girl cleaning
up a cabinet. "Not good for you?"
Kell grins and nods. Where is Tor? So Tor wanted an excuse
to come up here. Was he being watched too? Kell leaves the
room and looks down the hallway. To the left is no one. Wait
where is the guard? He was just there at the stairs door.
To the right is empty. Where is Tor? Wait didn't the leader
say he'd be up on the second floor. Could N'zoth be his guest?
Kell closes the door to the drug store and creeps east down
the hallway. AS he does the first door to his right opens and
he quickly draws back in case of attack. But Tor steps out
and stops suddenly. "Ohh...ahh..."
Kell positions himself to face Tor and look inside the room
but Tor tries to shut the door. But it is too late. Kell
sees what looks like a small storage room. Inside on the floor
the guard is down on the ground.
After closing the door Tor looks at Kell. "He got sick and
I helped him inside to rest."
Suddenly Tor leaps at Kell. Kell notices a flash of metal
shine from s sleeve. A sleeve blade is common to assassins
or to more professional fighters. Tor in one stroke grabs
his blade and lunges. Kell regrets giving Kiet his spear.
There is no time to draw his tulwar but he tries to stumble
and gets his dagger as Tor makes contact with him.
Unali heads to the bookcase and scans it for important items.
But it seems to be mostly histories, short stories, some legal
and law books. Nothing that seems of great value. Unali then
goes to the table and scans the map. Her eyes widen when she
realizes the icons and Katai notes on the side are markings of
Brigade places. Some are warehouses, some are taverns and others
are homes. This map could be the very network of this group. It
could let the military crush them or some friends of hers do the
dirty work. She quickly rolls up the map and hands all the
scrolls, books and map to Fremea. She tells them to take
them down and away from this place. Fremea shakes her head
that she could be of use looking more around. But Unali
shakes her head. Fremea should deliver the stuff to the boys
down in the alley. Fremea nods knowing she is the boss for
now. Before she leaves she hands Unali the small simple key.
On floor down Kell and Tor grapple. They twist and turn in
the middle of the hallway trying to gain better ground. Kell
realizes it is interesting that Tor doesn't want to slam
him up against a wall. Tor must want stealth in this situation.
Tor uses the change of confusion and does a leg swing. Kell
falls to the ground onto his left knee. Tor twists to the back
of Kell and pulls his dagger to Kell's throat. "I don't want
to hurt you. Quiet!" He glances down the hallway in both
directions. "You seem like a good guy and not part of this
group. My time is short here. I'm looking for a friend. He
is being tortured by these people. Somewhere on this floor.
I will knock you out and place you with the guard."
But Kell realizes that could frame him for this mess. Kell
struggles and begins to speak but then notices something odd.
Tor's boot has that metal slash on the front. While not
so common they can be used to kick hard. But he has only
seen such boots on certain people in town. The military
folks wear those boots!
Fremea takes to flight out the window and down to the alley.
Landing she heads to find Kell and Will. Where did they
go? They were across the street. She quickly runs and crosses
the street. She scans the alley with her keen eyes.
As she walks down the alley to find the boys she hears a
noise behind her. She whirls in time to see a horse riding
fast her way. A man with a torch in hand round the corner.
That's the same man that just entered the tavern and left his
horse outside. The horse is only about 15 feet away. Before
Fremea can react the man yelps in fright. "Demon!" He then
waves the torch with his free hand and tries to guide the
horse reigns in another direction.
Inside the factory only about 20 feet away they both hear
the man and look outside to the window. "Demon? Oh no.
Now what?" Zep shrivels up and almost begins to squirm under
the table he is leaning on.
Unali exits back into the hallway and heads to see what
room the man was guarding.

Actions? Comments?
Next Update...Friday...
GM: That was fun. Gives some action for almost everyone. :)
That's taking some control from you guys. Now you can
react (Well everyone but Unali I guess). Depending on
those changes I'll move on next update. Could get
the group going by next update depending. Ran out of
time tonight to update maps. I need to add the second
floor for info sakes. If you guys need the map to make
decisions let me know can work on it tomorrow and get
it out tomorrow night. Else it will be friday. I'm off
Thursday (my last thursday of this year so will make Friday
updates harder to work on). Likely will work on the update
some Wednesday night late or most Thursday night. So post
any actions you want. For now no map changes below due
to time. If its not clear Mark he has you in a minor choke
hold grip with one free to your left with dagger in hand.
Right hand around your shoulder/neck.
GM: See map for changes and notes on current positions.
