[New Stuff]
[Augado 5th, 1634TH]
[Location: Middle Katai Plains]
[ Pamau Province, Pamau City]
[Time: 10:48pm]
Kell enters the room with the prisoner and examines it. The
room is devoid of furniture except a chair, small table with
small lantern and what looks like a outline on the floor of
what once used to be a bed area. Tor's friend, in his 30s it
seems has black eyes, welts and too many bruises and cuts to
even count. The man is virtually a pulp of meat. Kell is
amazed to even see the man still alive.
Tor inspects his friend and checks his vitals. He tries to
give the man some light taps on the face to wake him. Kell
inspects the room but there is little here to inspect. Kell
figures this is a gang interrogation room. He shakes his
head he knows in Ba'ru street gangs intimidate by kidnapping
folks and sending them to rooms like this. He's heard of
some stories where a rich merchant was taken in order to gain
his loyalty in business, meaning to have him pay the gang
protection money. His family would be taken with his wife
and daughters also tortured. It was one thing Ba'ru leaders
didn't take care of since it was a unseen threat to public
scrutiny, meaning tourist money.
Tor looks around for water but finds none to give to his
friend. He then tells Kell to go down the hall to the drug
room and get water there. Kell hesitates but finds that
helping Tor might help him learn more of what is going on. But
Kell wonders how long it'll be before the two bodies in the hall
are discovered.
Upstairs Unali inspects the treasure room one last time. There
is a nice brass chest with gems, jewelry and coins. Most of the
gems seem cheap based on their small sizes but even so could fetch
a large sum if sold in total. The jewelry is rings, necklaces,
bracelets and a few scattered earrings. But the majority are
those of rings that look to be for men. It is unlikely a gang
like this simply robs folks on the road. While there is profit
in that the drugs, women and gambling can be at times a more
straight line low expense, high volume high profit business. Unali
figures the rings to be collateral or outright plunder from lost
gambling. She wonders how many marriages are in the chest from
lost wedding rings and shattered lives. Unali decides to scoop
up one hefty bags with coins and strap them to her belt. She
saw a bunch of gold glint inside. It would be great to
come back for it all but sooner or later things will be found
out, especially the missing guard. Then it will be time to
make a quick exit.
The vault room itself is 40 feet by 30 feet deep. Along the
back wall are wooden crates with weapons and armor. The weapons
are mostly cheap looking spears, swords and many daggers. The
armor are bulk suits of leather, ring and a few chains. It seems
the army they want isn't well equipped. Unali wonders if Nom Amor
tricked them into thinking the Vong would equip them with their
nice armor and weapons.
Along the side walls and center area there are various things
of worth from uniforms, a few crates of what must be very
expensive wine for private parties and some personal looking
items. The personal items are a collection of rugs, tapestries,
small statues and very expensive looking vases for some odd
reason. It would seem the boss thought these items of value,
and they likely are since they seem to be from noble homes, to
keep and store for later use or collateral. The uniforms interest
Unali as they clearly are of various Katai military design of
various ranks. Clearly these people could fake their way into
the various places the military could. While it is easy for any
green level thief to steal uniforms she wonders if there are papers
to back them up with.
Then Unali finds the very simple dusty looking box along the
right side of the room. It stands about 4 feet high and 3 feet
deep. It is lined up inside with slats and looks like it could
be a filing system of some sort. Knowing it could take time to
scan the full thing she only skims the documents. Within a few
moments she discovers the papers are signed leases, signed land
and home deeds as well as agreements of asset exchange. Clearly
if this box would burn some poor cheated saps who lost their home
to these people would be happy. But doing so would bring some
attention and there might be more exploring to do.
Frustrated Unali finds no Vong related documents. It seems
the boss thought this box of his stolen resources would be
far more valuable than some papers about some mysterious group
called the Vong. Why hide the Vong papers when no one in the
Empire but maybe a dozen outside their allies may even know
they exist? Dozens to millions makes it high odds the papers
would only be discarded and useless to those reading them.
Unali figures there must be hundreds of documents each with
some form of item lost to the gang. A set of horses here,
a farm there, a nice wagon here, 30 cows here, 52 acres of land
there, a land deed here, a set of fine crystal worth it says
200 gold as well as mundane documents nit picking small items
stolen. Before she closes the box she jerks as she realizes
something odd. Going back through the set of documents she
finds the last land deed. Pulling it out she reads it and
her eyebrows jut upwards.
The land deed is said to be turned over to the Brigade from
a certain Tai Wu. She breathes out slowly as she finds that
the carnival grounds the very party went to was sold to the
brigade. Likely under very dire duress. Based on the date
of the document it was done a day before the party got there.
That means the Vong must've had a Brigade ally or two to help
steal the land. Unali scans the document for reasons but can't
find any. Why would they steal that land? It isn't worth
much at all in this current day. But maybe the Brigade just
needed land to sell once the family was slaughtered. But
the reason to why the Vong were there in the first place is
missing. It must be that the baroness was simply taken there
to be interrogated and the family was a hapless innocents
in the way at the time. She decides to take the document.
Likely if it isn't the party that takes down this Brigade it
will certainly be the friends she has if not the military.
She might as well send the document back to the carnival so
the family can have some relief.
Unali finds a small bag of sapphires that might be worth in
total 4-5 gold. She decides to take it as well.
Scanning around and skimming other boxes there isn't much
other important things here. She can see why it was a guarded
and locked room. The items in total could be a nice amount
to pay for a nice country estate. But it isn't a king's
ransom or anything. That means the gang is just starting out
in their wealth acquisition plans.
Back on the street Fremea and Will inspect the messenger to
find him dead. It isn't sure if it was Will's strike or
Fremea's that killed her. Inspecting the body they find a
few coins, a beer stained tunic and a couple of papers. Going
to the horse a bag of other documents are found. But in this
darkness it would be impossible to read much less the good
place or time to read them. The messenger had a small dagger
but that was it for weapons. Taking the torch from the ground
the man is checked and a tattoo of the brigade is found on his
arms. He must be a gang go-between.
Will inspects the saddle as Fremea looks to the body. She
doesn't feel much remorse as she was called a demon. It
used to hurt her emotionally but after years of abuse in
Donara it just built up her will and anger. While she knows
she killed this boy for some reason she knows he deserve it
for being a unwilling or willing traitor to his land.
Will finishes off stripping the saddle of anything useful
and pulls the horse to the side to figure out what to do next.
All the while inside Kiet curses to himself. He didn't want
Zep to die. Possibly hurt, possibly to be damaged but to kill
him wasn't quite his final goal for now at least. Then he
recalls the so called curse the party has with prisoners. But
it was an accident, self defense at the least. Poor fate caused
a nail to be plunged into his neck. Even if Z'leyra was here
Zep might not have survived without immediate healing magic.
But Zep was also a pervert. Kiet knows this land, actually
his own land and even Marentia, has some young girls marry as
as early as 13. But to him it seems too young. There is even
a rumor that in the Rogizini empire nobles who marry a couple
force the girl to bed down with him to ensure she is a virgin
for proper marriage. Of course by the end of the night before
the husband gets her she is no longer a virgin. Then there
is the rumor of the red skinned folks in his homeland who do
worse. No. Maybe Zep did deserve to die. Who knows. But
it is done now and he shoves the man to the ground. At least
it will look like Zep tried to break in and died in some drunken
stupor. The man does smell of ale and beer.
Disgusted Kiet places his dagger back in his belt and gathers
up his rope. Kiet then heads to the open window and watches
as Will finishes with the saddle inspection. Kiet uses the
light of the torch Fremea is holding and sees the man down the
alley south of him lying on the ground likely dead. He shakes
his head as he climbs out the window not wanting any damage to
his knees or groin walking to the front door like Will had.
Quickly Kell returns to the interrogation room stepping over
the two bodies along the way. He shakes his head and wonders
why the man in the high stakes room didn't even comment on the
two bodies? Could he used to drunken or dead bodies in this
place? Kell gives the bruised man the canteen of water and
he drinks it in by instinct.
Finally after what seems like hours but is only a minute
at best the beat up man opens his eyes. Glancing around he
sees Tor. "Tor?...", the man chokes and then takes some
more money as he coughs a bit of blood. "You came for me
after all. Thank...you."
"Thank nothing of it. Your mother would kill me if you
didn't come home this harvest season." Tor smiles at the
man as he releases the ropes on the man's arms and legs.
Kell shakes his head in wonder how this man can joke in
a time like this?
As Tor cuts the ropes he glances at Kell who has a clear
sign of confusion on his face. "I might be able to take him
out on my own. If you want out you best go now so not to
get caught up in this mess. I'm sorry to have used you."
Kell shakes his head and helps lift the man up with help from
Tor. Kell asks why they were here.
"Tasked to check this place out. We heard rumors they were
increasing. After the noble purge the crime went down after
the Master General's Hand helped to show crime didn't pay.
But then this group was rumored to gain some power and were
said to be linked to crime in the city. Just this morning
we learned two of their members may have been involved in the
square thing this morning. Seems there is evidence that they
took out the executor and replaced him with some other person.
Once we get out of here we will return to the base. I suspect
this is enough for us to raid the place and see what is going
on in their paperwork and do some interrogation on our own."
Tor says with some effort as he and Kell haul the man up and
out into the hallway.
Kell glances backwards down the hall curious as to those
rooms. Tor sees his new friend looking and comments. "Those
are simple bedrooms past the high stakes room. Many are
used for the girls or staying the night. Not much useful
down there."
Kell suggests that the boss might have something useful like
keys or documents on him. Using this as an excuse he gives the
man over to Tor to support for awhile. Kell jogs down the hall
to the boss. Inspecting him the man is dead. Too bad he can't
be interrogated. Riffling through his tunic and pants he finds
nothing of value except a few gold and silver coins which Kell
takes since he won't need it in the after life. Kell can hear
grunts and moans down the hallway from two doors away. Seems
one of the rooms is in use by some couple.
Upstairs Unali leaves the vault room and heads east then north
to a door. Entering she finds another small office much
smaller than the boxes. It has the typical desk, chairs and
a small book case. There simply isn't much time to read
everything so she cans the few papers on the desk. Based on
the documents it looks like membership papers along with
employment papers. There are some documents of suppliers
and wholesale retailers the tavern gets their supplies from.
Looks like this office was used by the big guy's aide to
do much boring work he didn't want to do. Stuffing the list
of employees in her tunic she figures it might be useful to
track the members down at their very homes if they decide to
flee in a raid.
Exiting after only a minute searching that office she checks
the room across from the vault. Entering she finds yet another
office with the same furniture. But this one is very bare of
papers. In fact there is a simple calendar and a few mundane
messages of letters to various merchants. Scanning they only
seem to be notes of interest for goods and services. Finding
nothing useful here she exits and heads west down the hallway.
Now that half the 3rd floor is searched she reaches the door
on the north side of the hallway near the stairs. She finds
it locked and decides to try the vault door key. She finds
it works and opens it slowly. She finds a dimly lit room with
only two candles on a dresser. She finds a bed in one corner
and a couple of chests in another. Along the west wall are
sets of clothing hanging from the shelf. She notices that
the sheets rustle and a girl sits up in bed. She looks
dazed as if from a deep sleep. As the sheet drops Unali
can tell she is topless or likely naked. She must be around
15 or 16 and she stretches briefly. Then she notices Unali
in her black clothing and gives a slight moan. Unali crosses
the room in what seems like one giant step. Pulling the girl
up and holding a dagger to her throat she tells the girl to
hush. Unali asks what she is doing here and the girl explains
she is owned by a man. Unali figures that man to be the boss
as this is the only bedroom on this floor. Unali grits her
teeth in disgust. While the nobles don't technically condone
slavery as a empire wide industry there still is some. Most
called it debt-indentured servitude or such thing. Most slavery
in the Empire is held a closely guarded secret. While one noble
might have a harem of labor or pleasure slaves if other nobles
knew he might be a outcast or dealt with.
Unali has already started to spread her wisdom to those
in the Vassa lands on how males rule and that females should
be given equal rights. Even in Marentia her influence over
Duke Aren is growing in that areas as well. She is even
more proud to know that in her time on the Zen'da plains she
has spread her willful wisdom of female rights to those females
of the Zen'da. Who knows maybe someday a female will become
a shaman or even a Sha on the plains from her words of wisdom.
Unali knows this girl doesn't deserve to die. She is a victim
not a gang member. She leans down to the girl and unbuckles
her sapphire bag from her belt. She tosses it to the bed. She
explains she will take the bag after she wakes up. She will
escape this place and seek a sanctuary. She names a shop in
town she has a contact at who can help her with a new life.
She hesitates and decides to give the girl her name as a reference
to the merchant. Even if the gang caught her they might want to
know who will ruin this gang and what can they do to her once
she is a thousand miles away? It is a risk but she feels the
girl needs to escape and the risk is worth it. She tells the
girl to escape as soon a she wakes up. If she needs to that
the roof hatch will have a rope on the west side she can climb
down and escape that way.
Unali knows that taking her could be risky not only to her
own stealth work but if Unali is caught the girl would be
killed. The girl might have a better chance escaping on her
own. Unali feels bad about that but knows these things are
covered with risk and benefit. Pulling back she taps the
girl's forehead with the dagger and knocks her out. The blow
itself is so light and accurate it shouldn't cause any long
term danger. She leaves the bag of gems for the girl to use
in her next life.
Checking the clothes and chests she finds nothing of value
but rich silks and high quality fibers. Checking the dresser
she only finds minor items like mirror, ink, quills, some
parchments, makeup and some belts. Checking the walls for
a hidden area she notices dust in one corner is less and
uses her dagger to lightly tap out. Raban showed her how to
do this once before. Something about if its hollow there might
be a hole there. Quickly tracing the area she finds a small
inset into the wall. Using her dagger she pries the inset out
and finds a hole. She then finds the inset should've been
pushed inward but her lack of training by Raban forgot to
mention those things. Pushing inward on the small spring
in the hole a slide section of wall moves. It reveals a
wooden safe. Unali shakes her head. Not so fancy not even
a big lock on the thing. How pathetic. A green thief
could've found the thing.
Inspecting the safe she pulls out a long box and a few
small documents. Some of the papers are to females in the
form of a letter. She finds them love letters and it seems
a threat note to one female about some child. She tosses
them to the ground and finds one last document of great value.
The long parchment lists cities and names. The 20 major
Katai cities are all listed with three or four names. There
are notes on names of taverns, warehouses and offices. This
can't be a simple supplier document. She then realizes it
must be a Peace Brigade contact list. While 12 of the cities
have longer info at least 8 seem to have only a name listed
with no place. This must mean that 12 cities have some form
of Brigade base there and the others are just contacts for
future bases? Yes. She finds it very useful indeed. She stuffs
the document in her tunic as well.
Unali opens the long box and her breath is lost briefly when
she notices two items. The first is a medal like brooch with
gems inset. It must have a dozen small diamonds and a ruby
in the center. She has heard of such. It seems the Master
General gives these sort of medals out to a General who shows
high loyalty to him. It must be worth some coin. But how
could it be here? Likely stolen or traded. But the second
item glints in her eye like a dream. It is a dagger with a long
blade. The tip is very sharp compared to most daggers. The
hilt is set with small gems and runes of some kind. She
has heard of this very dagger. The Brown Dagger of Yeo was
its name from her childhood. It was said to be from ancient
times found during some L'p'nth-Katai battle of some sort.
It was owned by various General's over the years. Unali raises
her eyebrow and realizes it makes sense now. They stole these
items or were given them. But this dagger is worth great
on the black market as a collector's item. Not so much in
terms of coin but as a rare item. It is said to be a ritual
dagger by some high priestess in L'p'nth. It doesn't hold
magic or powers they say but it carries historical value.
Unali's mind races as she realizes a memory. She recalls
when the group found Ben'dar about to be killed in Cloud Base
from a high priestess. She used a dagger just like this in
that ritual. Unali decides to place the dagger into her
belt.
Down one flight of stairs Kell and Tor haul the weak man
further down the hallway. Tor explains the other rooms on this
end of the floor are drug prep rooms or drug use rooms. Kell
finds the stairs and decides to head up to the roof.
Unali exits the bedroom and check the last door she hasn't
tried. This is the room on the south wall or front of the
building. Checking it she finds it is a storage room with
various tavern supplies mostly of non food nature like sheets
and basic repair supplies.
Closing the door Unali turns and finds a man coming out
of the stairs area. Startled the man looks at Unali. He
places hands on hips. "You girls dress so kinky!" Turning
his head he notices the vault door guard is missing he
squints and scans the hall. "What the..." The man forgets
this kinky girl has daggers in her belt and dresses in
all black. Unali shrugs and notices the man steps a foot
forward looking for the guard. Getting behind the confused
man she pulls a dagger. "You don't belong here." He begins
to twirl around as he realizes for the one brain cell he has
that something is wrong here.
Facing the man now Unali nods and says she knows and slaps
the man with the dagger on the side of the head. With a thud
the man goes down to the ground. How stupid are these people?
He must be one of those drug fools who also guard. With this
kind of guard a group of old mothers could take this place.
Having inspected the floor she crosses the hall to the
stairs area. She finds it dimly lit. The stairs are
wooden and goes down. Glancing down she hears the creek
of the stairs. Looking around she sees a ladder going up
to the roof hatch. Behind the ladder a small alcove is
seen where candles and oil is stored. She hides and
hears a series of footsteps.
As the feet near her Unali lunges out with both daggers
to take the men out. but she notices two men jump back
and discovers one is Kell.
Puzzled that Kell is here and now with two strangers, she
sheaths her dagger.
Tor seems to find Kell know Unali, "a friend?"
Kell nods and then grins.
Unali explains the floor is searched. But there is not
much time before discovery. Kell agrees and that the
second floor has that risk as well. All three help the
weak man up the ladder and onto the roof.
Unali tells Kell where the rope is. It will be hard to
get the man down but the man is now walking compared to
being dragged. So his strength is slowly returning.
Unali climbs last toward the roof hatch ready to leave
this place when she hears shouts down below. She curses
as she realizes time has run out. As she gets midway up
the ladder two men rush up the stairs. With Drawn swords
they charge Unali.
Unali leaps at the two men and sways back and forth as
she uses her daggers. On the roof Kell helps the man to
the ropes and ties a bit around him in case he falls. The
man now has adrenaline through him and finds the strength
to repel down slowly with help from Kell. Tor hears Unali
fighting and starts down the ladder. Leaping down he joins
in with his own sword.
One of the men cuts Unali deep on the arm doing minor damage
but Unali kicks and twirls and in a blur slices the man up
with her daggers. The man falls dead before she even blinks
to turn to the other man. With help from Tor the other man
is quickly finished.
Tor reclimbs the ladder and Unali decides to use the oil
in the alcove to make the stairs down a bit slippery. As
she heads to the ladder a girl enters the stairwell. It
is the same girl from the bedroom. She is awake alot
sooner than she thought. Surprised Unali grabs the girl
by force and urges her up the ladder.
From the alley way Kiet, Will and Fremea notice some
muffled shouts from the tavern. Peering at the building
they can't tell what is going on at this point.
By the time Unali gets to the roof Tor has made it halfway
down to the ground on the rope. Unali urges the girl to
climb down as well and notices the bag of gems clutched in
her hands. The girl now dressed is clearly nervous about what
is going on but finds it hopeful for the first time in years.
Unali can hear a yell of pain below in the stairwell as a
man slips and sounds like he damages his knees from the
oil slick. Unali grins and ensures that all get to the ground
before she starts.
Fremea from the sky sees forms on the roof. Flying close she
finds Unali and others heading to the ground.
But from the front door men begin to stream out. Orders
are heard. "Check the area. These thieves will be found
and dealt with!"
After hearing that Unali is now on the west side of the building
Will urges Kiet to head south around the front of the furniture
factory and head back north if he can to rejoin Unali. If
things go bad Fremea can find him. Before Kiet can protest Will
climbs the messengers horse and makes it go around the corner.
Riding forward the woodsman carries the torch and yells wildly
like a drunk during a holiday. He suddenly stops the horse when
he notices the crowd of four outside the tavern. A fake show
of fright is on his face as he turns the horse around and heads
east down the street away from the western side of the building
where Unali is. The men scream for Will to stop and draw their
weapons as they chase the man on the horse.
From the roof Unali can hear the noise below and takes the
rope to the ground. She directs the group toward the north
and west. Tor explains that his horse is hidden nearby and
he'll take them there. Unali agrees and Kell goes to protect
the female and other two but knows Tor can handle himself.
Unali peers around the corner ready to deal with any who
might come this way. But she is happy when they chase some
fool on a horse. Whoever that was.
Another two men exit and head east slowly to patrol the area.
She hears them talk about men in the back near the outhouse.
She could be spotted if they circle the place so waits for them
to round the corner. Heading south she eventually comes up
against Kiet and directs both of them west.
Based on help from Fremea to serve as aerial cover for Kiet
and Unali the two get away. Fremea occasionally uses a rock
or other distraction to draw the Brigade people in another
direction.
Eventually Fremea finds Will on his horse and directs the
crazy woodsman to the others. Now all back together with
stuffed packs of letter and booty a quick plan is formed.
Unali gives the bruised man the horse the messenger used
so they can find Tor's horse. Tor decides to take the girl
with him to protect her. But Unali doesn't allow this until
Tor assures her the girl will not be taken for questions or
as an enemy of the state. Tor glances to Kell and realizes
that a minor debt is owed. Tor nods when he notices how
stern and determined Unali is. Tor agrees to take her
and get her a place to stay the night.
Parting paths the 2 men and girl head west. Unali and the
others head north and east in a random path back toward the
tavern where the rest of the party is waiting for them.

Next Update...Monday...
GM: Another fun post for now. Not quite much chance for you
guys to act. But we are now down with this. Monday I'll
move the party back to the tavern. We'll then move everyone
out of the city and toward the shed for a much now reduced
scene there. I was going to do a bit more but decided how
to speed things up. :) I know the others have been bored
so I'm sure others will be glad to be back in the game.
Thanks for all those who understood getting this scene
done with. I know it could've been slow and better with
player actions but might've taken another month if things
got drawn out. For a low vital place at this point. But
plenty of papers have been found. Unali will have to
decide how to handle those papers and who to turn them
over to either the military or her friends. Hope it
was fun for you guys.
GM: Once we do leave the city we should be at 75% done with this
adventure. I will have to check my timeline.
GM: To all those who celebrate it - Merry Christmas or happy
holidays or whatever you might celebrate this season.
Enjoy the holiday. For me personally this will be my
last 5 days off (Sat-wed) until likely next September.
So my days off for vacation and the like will be at least
9 months away :< Which means back to the old grind. Monday
updates will still not be a factor but Fridays could be
delayed depending on how things go and how well posts come
in the previous days. Sigh. Back to the grind in a week.
GM: Thanks for the email comments about the previous update being
fun scenes to read. That means a lot to me. I enjoy
comments on the work. It motivates me to do more. So
I'm glad some enjoyed it!
