[Recap]
From Kell: [Re: Actions]
[For now Kell won't go explore the warehouse, but that may
change very quickly. We shall see...]
Kell watches all the commotion with concern in his thoughts. He
watches those still in the room, and once it appears safe he goes
upstairs as well. Knowing he isn't a healer and can't bring
anyone back from the dead, he watches everyone and all the
possible ways in and out. "Poor Shu, such a flower cut down
too early in life" he thinks to himself, as he keeps an extra
close eye on both Raban and Fremea.
Kell walks over to the map where Shu was found and looks at it,
and he sees???
[After this I do have more actions. But I want to see what is on
the map first.]
GM: Ack.
From Z'leyra: [Re: Actions]
Z'leyra also looks at Fremea and asks "What did you see?
Z'leyra ponders what if anything could be done for Shu. Massive
damage to the brain...dead for more than ten minutes...no healing
that she knows of could possibly save Shu at this point. But
perhaps Regeneration on the wound...coupled with a Resurrection...
maybe, though doubtful. Shu's spirit is likely on its way to its
next destination. In any case she has neither of those spells and
spells are dangerous to cast here. She does have a dangerous spell,
Akasha, that could give a much better idea of what happened here...
but is it worth casting? Besides attracting potentially fatal kinds
of trouble the spell itself is very tricky, any failure being
abysmal. Without her tools failure would be far more likely than
she wants to risk.
In any case it is obvious that an assassin has found the party,
putting off leaving beyond the crack of dawn would be foolhardy.
She tells the party "We must pack and leave this town,...
GM: Ack.
From Whitney: [Re: Actions]
Whitney examines the wound over the various shoulders in his
way, "If we're going to try and do something to 'repair' the...
[*** Z'leyra quote deleted for space ***]
GM: Ack.
From Kell: [Re: Actions]
Kell listens to Z'leyra who has mirrored his own thoughts.
Responding to her, "I had similar thoughts, although I think...
If the healer mentions the spell Akasha, Ha'Kell will voice his
opinion it may be worth using even with the risks if Fremea
doesn't know what happened. Perhaps with some Luck or
Purification to help it, these not mentioned as spells but in a
very general sense in case there is a spy.
----------
[arg. forgot to include this. grrr.]
After arriving in the room and surveying things, Kell quickly
remarks "Someone should go check on the wagon and Whitney...
GM: Ack. Slightly modified since Whitney is here.
From Fremea: [Re: Actions]
<ooc - don't worry Scott I read the post first :)>
Fremea is standing there when Raban walks through the door. "I
just got in here myself." She starts to investigate using her own
skills to see if she can figure out how someone was already in
here or had gotten in here and out without showing anything was
wrong, only backwards. She will look at the maps too, to see if
there was a marker or Shu's fingers on a spot. She touches the
dagger after that (sending a separate email to you Scott).
When Z says something about Regeneration, "I can help with regen
if needed. I am not the best skilled at it, however my masters
thought I should know it just in case."
GM: Ack. She didn't mention Regeneration but only as a thought
so not included in dialogue.
From Arawn: [Re: Actions]
As everyone gathers in Shu's chamber and attempt to begin
investigations Arawn carefully studies the area. As the others
attempt to move towards Shu and the table Arawn will attempt to
block them with his own body, excepting Z'leyra as she looks over
the girl. He does not attempt to block anyones view, only
physical contact with her items, keeping a careful eye on any
that move close or those that examine her body.
"We should stay still for the moment so as to not disturb...
-----------
Forgot to add at the end-
"After the Akasha, if done, I will call upon Shu's spirit...
GM: Ack. Who is this "inn spy" you speak of?
From Raban: [Re: Actions]
<I will correct the oops and send to the list, some of this was
not posted to it. It is not 'secret' and should not be as anyone
in the room could hear it.>
"Not perceptive enough", Raban replies, "I should have...
<hopefully this can be fit together with the other posts>
Nasty problem and just what did occur? Maybe Raban will show
some insight into events.>
GM: Ack. I pieced it together I hope. Look at update #63 I
posted who is in what rooms and then the maps are online.
Basically all are clumped together. No one is nearby
in the immediate area just across the hall.

[New Stuff]
[Julis 25th, 1634TH]
[Location: Middle Katai Plains, Shantou Province, Shantou city]
Hours earlier in the tavern during the fun games Kell and others
have Unali sits with Kell for some time and both talk of her
home land and home city. Unali tells Kell about the Empire, the
city and types of food he should try, change of the seasons and the
blossom of the trees to be admired. Catching trout in the stream
close to the city on the estate she often visited. And she agrees
that family is important, but that parents always have such high
expectations, which are sometimes hard to meet. But she refuses
to go into details, becoming the somewhat brooding and silent
Unali from recent times.
Kell can sense that maybe being a woman in this society is
far tougher than it looks. The male dominated and noble oriented
society sees women as property and ways of marriage into
Houses and power. Kell senses Unali has had to dealt with this
her whole life.
-------------------
[Julis 26th, 1634TH]
[Location: Middle Katai Plains, Shantou Province, Shantou city]
[Time: 2:45am - Night 2 in Shantou]
Raban glances over at Fremea with a look of concern and a bit
of worry. Raban, though confused, still sees more than some.
Softly he approaches Fremea and calmly says , "What did you see?
What happened here?"
Fremea quickly looks up at Raban, with her mouth open to say
his name. "You are more perceptive than I had thought. There was
nothing here that I had seen as I entered. I have only been here
for a minute. I will find what has happened though. No one kills
my 'sister.'" The look in her eyes defies that she looks like a
child right now.
"Not perceptive enough", Raban replies, "I should have heard
anyone in that Hallway, yet I did not hear you or whoever did
this. I checked the Room and Shu locked the door. I will check
the room again, I know about secret doors, hiding places and spy
holes, they should not remain hidden from me a second time."
"Who has the rooms to either side, or even above or below? If
rome door or hatch exists, it should connect to one of those. And
if they exist, this place is responsible for this tragedy! She
was so happy this evening, no one should have taken that away from
her!"
In Raban's grief he slowly recalls that the party all took the
same rooms right each to one another. Across the hall was the
bodyguard room. Above is the roof and to the side is a small
indoor latrine and stairs. The only other rooms are two rooms
next to the bodyguards and Raban would've heard movement there.
Raban feels like shoving a fist through a wall as does many in
the room.
As others file in and Fremea sees their looks she feels
the need to repeat her words.
Fremea almost pale white from shock herself looks around. "I
just got in here myself." The Faerry begins to scan the room and
replay the last few moments. Nothing went by her at the door
and it was securely locked. The boards out in the hallway alert
the vigilant Raban and others to movement. But her frame is so
light this is how she was able to get in. Maybe the assassin
was as light as her? But that seems unlikely as to overpower
a person as big as Shu. She examines the room and sees nothing
out of place bags, bed and gear are pretty much in the same place
as before just hours earlier.
Downstairs Kell cleans up his last few sips of ale and notices
Kiet rush down and outside. Then he sees Z'leyra and others
rush in almost running. Kell glances around and some do notice
this new heightened sense of alert but quickly turn to their
late night drinks and shrug it off. Even the staff seem to not
even care what is going on.
Kell quickly gathers up his cards and rushes upstairs. When
he notices people in the hall he rushes over. Then he notices
people inside watching and looking. then Kell notices Shu's
body slumped over the table. He says a quiet prayer and a
note of regret to himself. To lose a person like her who was
only here to help is wrong.
Z'leyra examines the wounds and the body temperature of Shu.
She shakes her head and glances to others. Without saying the
words it shows on her face Shu can't be helped. She considers
Resurrection like Cetric or even Chion knows but could be
a risk with this type of wound. Over recent months Chion studied
with Cetric to learn his skills and become a Shaman and maybe
even to learn that spell. But assassins of this skill knows
that such wounds hinder resurrection. If one kills with wounds
to the brain either through the eyes, nose or skull it makes
reformation of the brain harder. After all the memories and
brain tissue aren't formed fully on a perfect resurrection.
This is obvious with Caldan for example. With Resurrection
skills and physical bearing is decreased. With a damaged brain
that could even be regenerated that would mean even much more.
Even the scholars at Ticasi knew little of the brain and how
it worked. She sighs and stands up with some blood on her
hands from the examination.
After arriving in the room and surveying things, Kell quickly
remarks "Someone should go check on the wagon and Whitney and
Will, anyone who is outside. Make sure they are safe too."
Fearing the worst for them, but wanting the best, even for the
Professor.
Z'leyra also looks at Fremea and asks "What did you see? What
happened?" She notices the torn dress and blood on her and
suspicion clearly shows on the Healer's face.
Z'leyra mentally considers Akashs but doesn't voice those
thoughts. Only a few like Farseeker and maybe Caladan might
have known she has used that ability but most others would not.
But without her magical aids it could be problematic.
She cleans her hands as best she can and then concludes things
have changed for the party. "We must pack and leave this town,
before dawn if possible. An assassin has found us, soldiers may
not be far behind. Lets wrap her body up and take her in the
wagon...we can bury her later."
Whitney examines the wound over the various shoulders in his
way, "If we're going to try and do something to 'repair' the
damage at some point, a preserved body is easier to 'repair'. But
I'll need someone to shield the area, first."
Kell listens to Z'leyra who has mirrored his own thoughts.
Responding to her, "I had similar thoughts, although I think the
Vong themselves, and their agents, know we are searching for them.
It is very likely they knew who could help us find them the most.
That, or the distraction that Shu mentioned and arranged turned on
her. That is a distinct possibility. Whilst I don't know which
is true, you speak well saying we should pack and leave as soon
as possible."
Fremea begins to hear the questions asked of her and what may
have happened. Especially the looks of blood on her dress and
the ripped dress itself. "I happened to step out for a little
bit and someone drunk in the alleyway tried to have some 'fun'
with me. He will not do that to any other person now. I was not
seen." She says that without a glance up from anything she is
looking over. The last part is to ease anyone who had any other
thoughts of distracting her.
Just as Fremea is explaining her side of things, Arawn arrives
at the door. He had been outside on nightwatch so is one of the
last to arrive. When he notices the party members not riding
up to their other Inn he become concerned and raced upstairs.
But by now half a dozen people have been in the room. Far too
late to prevent touching of Shu or her items. By now Raban,
Fremea, Z'leyra at the very least have all touched the body and
her things.
Arawn raises his hands to quiet the group. "We should stay still
for the moment so as to not disturb any clues. Someone should also
guard the hall." From where he was it was obvious that the
attacker was skilled in the arts of assassination, the wound too
clean for a simple thug.
"We have a few options as to what happened here. The attacker
snuck in the room or was already here before Shu arrived; magic
was used to enter and exit the room; one of us is responsible,
willing or otherwise."
"If the attacker used mundane methods then it seems unlikely he
snuck in through the windows as they are locked and sneaking into
Shu's room through her front door would have likely drawn her
attention. That means either he would have had to be hidden in
the room prior to her arrival and then slipped past the guard as
he exited the room or else used a secret passage to get in. If
magic was used to enter and exit then magic will have to be used
to discover this."
"If it was one of us then I think we can come to answer on that
with magic as well. I do not believe any here would do such an act
willingly but with the right magics a person can be made to
perform acts quite contrary to their nature and being separated
throughout the day and evening would give a magician plenty of
opportunities to charm one of us."
Lowering his voice just a bit in case any other guests might be
within earshot he continued, "I can scan us for lingering signs of
enchantment and I am willing to allow the same to be done to
myself. I can also sense the truth if need be but I think a
scanning of the akashic record would prove most insightful. As to
Shu," directing a sad gaze to the young magician. "I can call upon
her spirit for answers if she did not leave a clue for us on the
table. It would also give me the chance to see if she wishes to be
brought back to life. I can do so for her but she would be a pale
shadow of herself as I have not developed my expertise with it
yet."
"As to leaving, I don't think it necessary just yet. If guards
were to be alerted I think they would have already been here by
now. That Pamau is likely our next stop I will not argue but I
think that there are leads in this city and someone doesn't want
us to find them. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the work of
the 'Night Demons' but whoever, whatever is behind this the
question that rings in my mind is, how did they know who to
strike? Perhaps a few questions directed to the inn's spy could
prove enlightening... after we are finished searching things
here."
Raban lowers his head briefly and blushes. He then quickly
tells of the last moment of Shu's life with him. The Kiss she
gave him. His eyes then turn glassy as he realizes that she
must've sensed something? He recalls how he looked at the room
to find no one or no problems. Then he locked the room. If
anyone could have gotten in past a bulk of a man like that he
would have to be quite skilled.
Looking to Z'leyra Arawn asks, "Are you willing to perform the
Akasha? After the Akasha, if done, I will call upon Shu's spirit
unless any object to it and we can then look at the items and
search for secret doors. Does anyone wish to scan me after I am
done sensing for enchantment?"
As people began to question what was going on, Fremea grabs
the dagger on the floor near the blood and casts a quick tracking
spell. This is done even before Arawn enters. But as the spell
ends the Faerry frowns. The range and sense of direction points
to Shu herself. Fremea sighs and then realizes this very dagger
must be Shu's own. Fremea knows she kept it near her or the
couch. It would make sense the killer would not leave the murder
weapon lying around. But to kill Shu with her own very weapon
takes skill. She must've left it on the couch or bed and didn't
feel in danger to need it closer?
By now several have been in the room making investigation a bit
hairy. Arawn tries to scan for missing items but since he has
only been in here once it is hard to tell what could be missing
or new. He doesn't know what all Shu had in her personal gear.
So he can't figure out what is new or missing.
The small room is just like that of Zhou's and Kiet's. It is
small being 40 feet by 40 feet. In the rear is a single door
to the balcony to the left of the fireplace which is closed
and secure not needed in the summer time. The door itself was
locked as Unali checked earlier. To the left of the door is
a small window which was locked as well as a larger window
taking up the right side of the back wall on the right side
of the small fireplace. Both windows were tight and secure. The
balconyy is checked by several people and no sign of disturbance
or blood is seen. Inside the bed is where Fremea used to sleep
needing to spread her wings out. Shu decided to sleep on the
couch as it was fine with her. The two cushioned seats in front
of the couch are the same as the other rooms. To the left
of the front hallway door and south of the bed is a small
clothing and gear chest which has mot of the two female's
gear in it. To the right of the door and south of the couch
is the desk. The desk lies up against the right east wall.
On the right side slumps Shu onto the desk sitting in her
cushioned chair. The desk is no more than a fancy table top
with no drawers or shelves. The desk has a single candle stand
with two candles which is the only light in the room at this
time. The nightstand near the bed also has some candles but
are cold and show no sign of being lit any time recently.
Likely Shu needed the concentration in her trance and the
dim light but it is not clear. Shu remains in the clothes
she came up in aside from wearing no shoes. She is slumped
forward with the top of her chest at the right west side
of the desk. Her right arm dangles to her side. Her left arm
is flat on the table but at a angle about 90 degrees to her
body as if in simple sleep. Her hair is matted with blood but
dangles down her shoulders and back. The wound itself is on
her left side showing the killer was on that side likely rather
than the side of the door in the south. This seems to indicate the
killer came from the north or balcony direction rather than
the door. Since the desk is only a few feet from the door he or
she would've had to be a fast killer to do the damage.
The desk candles continue to burn brightly. To the right
of the candles is a ink bottle with quill strewn on the table.
The ink is fresh and shows an occasional drop or two on the desk.
To the left of the ink bottle are the two maps and a few inches
from her left arm. Behind Shu toward the clothing chest blood
spray shows the wound sprayed outward on impact and blotted the
chest and floor. A good amount of gray matter and blood dropped
onto the left side of her shoulder, back and side onto the floor.
The bulk of blood is directly under her left shoulder and shows
signs of fast pooling then sudden stopping when her heart stopped.
With this type of wound the blood loss would be fast but once
the heart stopped the blood would've stopped and started to
drip rather than pour.
Kell checks Shu's right arm for signs of struggle and her
fingers. But nothing seems to indicate such. No bruises or
anything under the fingernails. With her recent bath and
treatment by the girls here fingers were cleaned recently
so it would be a good sign but nothing shows struggle. Based
on her body it would appear she didn't even have time to
stand or react. Her head faces north toward the balcony
rear area. Based on this angle most of the gore and blood
was in the first strike. The rest must've occurred as it
drained away. Kell also checks for stolen items but has no
clue what should be here or not. For that Kell and Arawn would
have had to inspect every item of their personal gear.
Minutes after the initial discovery everyone has come up
to see what is going on. This amount of people causes two
guests to enter the hall in their night clothes and wonder
what is going on that side of the hall. Zhou comes out
and waves them down. He speaks softly but enough to be heard
rather than not yelling. "My servant was so drunk he hurt
my daughter by accident. We will deal with him. Sorry
to disturb you. Please go back to sleep."
The old man who the party has seen as a merchant in spices and
the old woman from another room who is a lower noble both shrug
and enter back into their rooms.
Zhou returns to the room and asks Caladan to standard guard.
"I agree with Z'leyra we need to leave right away. We will
pack up immediately and leave before sunrise. We have enough
leads about Pamau to try there." Zhou ignores the glare from
Arawn. "Raban if you will be so kind to take her to the wagon
in a blanket. Kiet go with him when he does and cover his
movement. Everyone we'll pack up here then take the wagon
to the other inn. Best to stay in one group for now."
Zhou then turns and heads for the door. Farseeker who was
outside and leaning up against the wall near the door suddenly
twirls hearing Zhou and blocks the door. "Don't you even
care what happened?"
Zhou crosses his arms. "Yes. But the protection of the group
is critical now." Seeing that Farseeker is not moving away he
turns to Arawn. "You seek to cast ...to do tasks to gain the
truth. That is fine but do you realize what you do here tonight
might very well be what they wanted? This could be one big
setup. If more tasks are done they get their evidence and we
are collected in a trap. For each task you do you risk our
heads further. Shu was a brave woman and she was not afraid
to die and knew ..knew that it could happen." Arawn stares at
Zhou and notices his eyes shift. Farseeker not being too
perceptive picks on this and turns Zhou around.
"She spoke of this to you?" Farseeker asks.
Zhou breaths in deeply. "She...was prepared. She knew
this was going to happen."
Farseeker's and Raban's fist clench. Farseeker steps forward
into the face of Zhou. "You knew?" He places emphasis on the
word knew. "You didn't warn us?"
Zhou waves a hand. "We don't have time for this. I am
willing to explain this later on the road. We must pack
and leave fast. We don't know what to expect." With that
he strides past Farseeker into the hall toward his room.
Zhou stops in the threshold of the door. He turns and
whispers. "She said she would not want to return to this
place if she did die. If you do not believe this her journal
will vouch for this." With that he leaves and heads toward
his room.
With the room now full of confusion, more mystery and anger
some turn back to Shu. Now attention is placed onto the maps.
Both are open and spread out. Examination of the ink shows it
to be well dry being likely hours old or so. One small map
is that of Shantou province. It shows the province which
includes many farm green areas and the dizzying network of
city streets in generic terms. The detail isn't that great
but it is enough to get around the province for a tourist. She
mentioned the spell would best work in the city to detect those
in the city. But when the city proper is examined there is
no note at all. But as the various people like Fremea, Arawn
and Kell examine the maps there is a small black circle around
a small area of plains just south of the river south of the city.
The scale seems only a few miles.
Caladan looks down. "The area must indicate some Vong or
in the case of the ritual dead space or non-mana space area.
This is a good lead. We'll have to see what is there. " The
circle seems to indicate a area between two large farm ranches.
It should be fairly easy to find.
The second map is a larger map of Katai. It shows the south
Katai area from Katai capital to the coast and down with some
area slightly north of the capital. It goes down to upper
Lower Katai. There are streaks of black ink in the shape of
"X" that seem to indicate nothing was found there. But eyes
widen when a large black circle is indicated to some hills and
mountains just west of Pamau. The area looks to be maybe 200-300
square miles but the scale is rough from this map.
"That has to be it!" Caladan points to the mountain region.
"This is a definite lead. She may not have died in vain!"
he then looks around. "But the killer didn't take the maps?
Maybe he didn't know about them or their purpose? Maybe he
wasn't hired for that?" He glances to Fremea. "Or maybe he
was scared away at the last moment?"
Arawn squints at the map and notices another small black circle
actually surrounding Pamau city. He points it out to the others.
This must indicate some dead zone or Vong in the city? But
the ritual as Shu says would be hard to pinpoint it without
being in that city. The party recalls that Shu said a 3rd
casting of the ritual would pinpoint the exact location not in
so much generic terms as now. But as this is only the 2nd one
since Jinquo it is a rough generic area. But it is a major
lead to the Vong.
Examination of the room indicates no blood trail which either
means the killer killed her with her own dagger and then quickly
leaving so fast there was no trail on him to drip or his body
was positioned in such a way as not to get any blood on him.
He could've done that by shifting his body to her right. But
to show no fight means she was totally surprised.
Actions? Comments?
Next Update...Friday...
GM: If need reminder on details of hotel the room assignents
are at bottom of Update #63 and hotel map on site as well.
GM: The map has been on the website for about 2 days. Those
who looked would've seen it already. it is shu's map at
the bottom of the site. Its odd. I spent an hour working
in this fancy graphics program. I can't do a simple circle
without a stroke. I had transparent circles and half circles
and fancy circles and none showed up well. So the dwarves
are sitting back drinking and laughing. I go over whip and
beat them. Threaten to remove the Ale rations. So they
tell me to load up a simple program called Paint in Windows
which is cheap. In 5 min I had what I wanted. Grrr. So
I went back and whipped them for not telling me earlier.
GM: Arawn do you continue to cast these magics and such?
GM: Private emails. Just a reminder. I don't mind private
emails. But as a general rule. I handle all public posts
first. It is done here at the recap section as a quick
outline for me to work with. Right in front of me. Then
when that's done I get to private emails. So if actions
there are small like a line or two I'll read it in depth
but if longer I get to it last. Just best organized
this way. I say this in case it takes longer to reply
or ack the emails.
