[Recap]
From Whitney: [Re: Actions]
mine should also include Artist, woodcarving. pretty much
every bit of whittling he's doing uses both skills. it's all
been decorative, so far.
Although, if anybody needs a wooden dinner set, or maybe a nice
staff or wooden club?
GM: Ack. I figure it was just whittling. But that's fine.
From Kell: [Re: Actions]
Ha'Kell knows he isn't high enough caste to stay at the exclusive
inn, so he plans to use the other one. He helps get the wagon and
team into the stables, then grabs his gear and starts walking to
the other inn. Not before making plans for the group to meet
again later in the evening at a location everyone can visit.
On the way to the inn he'll look at the shops. If one is selling
clothes, he will buy a new set for himself, one that blends in
better here in Shantou, including a new hat that is better suited
to the locals. He looks for clothes for Raban, knowing that
custom clothes are the most likely option..
At the Inn he gets his room, and any other necessary for the
group, goes to his, then he gets a bath and cleaned up from the
long trip. He carefully arranges his hair and wears his new hat,
hiding his ears, and wears his new clothes. He has a dagger and
his tulwar, but looks more like a merchant than a fighter. Kell
takes the rest of the afternoon to explore the streets and areas
nearby. Using his keen half-elf eyes and senses, he is scanning
for anything magic and any detectors.
He walk several blocks further into the city, finding what looks
like an inn frequented by locals. He goes inside, gets a beer,
and starts listening to the locals talk. Trying to hear as much
as he can, he slowly drinks his beer. To keep people talking, he
may buy a beer or two for others. He wants to hear all about what
is going on in the city and the countryside. Given the chance,
he'll ask about some escaped prisoners that he keeps hearing
about.
Browsing the shops while walking, he's also looking at the symbol
that Will drew for him.
He's not showing it around, but definitely looking for it on
crates and anywhere. He's also looking for a few personal items
as he browses.
He will return to the group by dinner, assuming we were meeting
together near the end of the day.
GM: Ack.
From Raban: [Re: Actions]
<Raban has been working on his horsemanship skill predominately,
but would like to learn to read katai for signs and such>
<Inn problems, Raban would try to sit before Fremea's door but
most likely would be told to move even when he says it is a matter
of honor.
<Bath, Raban really wants a bath! LOL He does not mind being
compared to a horse...But not due to scent! So it would appear
he needs to go down the street for this. It may cause some
interesting side effects.
<Clothing, Raban will either need to make some himself or hire it
done. If materials are limited in his packs he will need to
acquire some. This would also tend to require him to find a
seller which is likely the same as finding a tailor shop.
[Likely fresh from the bath] "The mistress has burned most my...
GM: Ack. Sorry the trip is over and so was the deadline for skill
training. It was up and posted about 3-4 weeks. Sorry.
Next leg of the trip though remind me when its time and
will put that in the training notes.
From Kiet: [Re: Actions]
After we arrive at the Inn, Kiet will be seen to be quite busy
attending to Zhou's needs. Kiet hears the talk of the nobles
objecting to the servants taking baths in THEIR tubs...so...
Kiet will go to Kell and offer him a few silver coins. "My...
GM: Ack.
From Z'leyra: [Re: Actions]
Z'leyra will try to get a small but clean room at the 2nd inn.
She will see if any in the party want to accompany her in a
perusal of such shops as might carry supplies useful in healing
(herbalists, clothmakers, etc. ). She will also see what some of
the local jewelers or gem stores carry in terms of gemstones and
check out the style and quality of work (and what it goes for)
locally. She will carry her knife easily available.
At night she will lock and block the door and window to stop or
slow any uninvited entrance. For further study she will want to
learn certain spells or, if teaching not available, to read and
write Katai.
GM: Ack. There may be more travel later. Remind me then on the
learning reading.
From Kell: [Re: Actions]
Responding to Kiet, "Of course I can arrange to have a bath...
[If Kell finds out Z'Leyra wants to learn to read/write Katai,
he will offer to help teach her. He's not as skilled as a native,
but pretty good at read/write Katai.]
GM: Ack.
From Arawn: [Re: Actions]
An introspective expression came over Arawn as he pondered how
to word his response. His reply came in a voice that was soft
and thoughtful.
"It isn't an issue of whose world this is, in fact while some...
-----
In the city-
"I suggest that any excursions into the city be left in the...
Arawn will keep as low a profile as possible for the remainder
of the day. Taking a bath only if privacy is an option.
[Kell is trying to learn Merchant - Horse with all the horse
buying/selling. I'm guessing the horse purchases will be the
second day we're in Shantou.]
[Regarding rooms at the average inn.]
GM: Ack.
From Kiet: [Re: Actions]
[*** Kell's Quote deleted for space ***]
Kiet respons to Kell, "Well, I would prefer to go along...
[*** Raban's Quote deleted for space ***]
Raban just wants a chance to show off at the public bath....
exhibitionist tendencies.
GM: Ack. Well maybe the myth is true height could determine
other body proportions? Might be nice to see his large
feet? :)
From Raban: [Re: Actions]
<Raban as Fremea's bodyguard should not be far off. Since he will
not be allowed to sit in front of her door, the room #4 is
adequate but may limit the total number of people that fit
<Bathing at this noble inn for guards is still likely limited
and may require Raban to use the public bath? <The tailor post
from earlier should still be valid, though I may need to verify
how much coin Raban has?
[** Kiet's quote deleted for space ***]
<Of course Raban wants to show off, his goddess requires it ;)
anyway his appearance is almost as high as his strength
<I am unsure how much a few sets of clothing would cost if they
need to be better materials but a gold should go a long ways. If
it is way too much then we better reduce it or it will draw even
more attention.>
<Raban prefers durable leather clothing but in Katai it is rather
warm
GM: Ack. You have plenty of money (mostly silver). Though
will assume basic clothing style (pants, shirt, etc.) Nothing
fancy like silks is assumption unless stated otherwise.
From Whitney: [Re: Actions]
I realize they have a guard staff in the coach house, but Whitney
would as soon sleep in the wagon itself. In fact, if there's some
scrape wood about, he'll spend his time carving up a toy menager
ie while making sure any hidden bits of the wagon aren't searched
for (much less found).
Worse case, he'll raid the nearest stack of firewood for
materials. Assuming wood cooking fires, anyhow (as opposed to
charcoal, coal, or even less savory bits of... things).
Food and bathing at the other inn, of course, although food to
go would be preferred. Whitney has a bad feeling about leaving a
smuggler's delight like the wagon alone for people to poke into.
GM: Ack.

[New Stuff]
[Julis 8th, 1634TH]
[Location: Upper Katai Plains, West of Jiuquo City]
[Night of Monk combat, around campfire]
After Farseeker giggles and explains the possible motivations of
the Vong, Arawn replies to the warrior and group.
"It isn't an issue of whose world this is, in fact while some
would agree with you otherwise would argue otherwise. I save it
for more than men and gods. I do so for a greater good. To allow
innocents to suffer and die would be wrong and deprives them of
the chance to learn, grow and evolve. And you are right about the
Vong, we do not know if they are good and honorable but their
actions thus far have done little to indicate such but if
necessity drives them then I hope that a peaceful answer will
appear. Much in life is based upon perspective and this is why I
have sought to understand the Vong. It is why I would seek parlay,
to learn their tongue, and why I risked much to merge with the
serpent crown. I have seen a little into their world while melded
and know it is a hostile place with a seemingly terrible and
alien power behind it. Still I will not condemn them out of hand
without knowing more. Will you?"
Farseeker rolls his eyes, "Fine. You speak up with the Vong and
try to get a peace accord. While you do this and they are killing
us we'll defend ourselves and kill them. Just hope we leave enough
behind for you to talk to."

[Julis 24th, 1634TH]
[Location: Upper Katai Plains, Shantou Province]
[Weather: Cloudy, Temperature: 66-98]
[Time: 12:32pm]
As the wagon pulls up to the Blue Crystal Inn the heat is still
pretty unbearable in the 90s. Traffic this time of day is light
but still plenty of folks around. As folks dismount and exit the
wagon the party takes a good look around the area.
The drive here from the city gate was informative in many ways.
It showed that the majority of people do not carry weapons. The
vast number of people have to be peasant classes around 80%
of those seen. Few maybe 15% of the other folks must be middle
class folks and the rest of any high social status. The vast
majority do not seem to carry weapons at all. Those that do
tend to be city guards, escorts, personal guards, merchants or
the few who likely you would not want to meet in an alley. Most
seem to carry only daggers or knives. A few seem to have swords
on their hips. Due to the heat around at least 95% of the city
population have light cloth clothing that is breathable and loose.
It is clear the party who wear armor, leathers and heavy clothing
are outsiders. Of course the party by simple looks is that way
even if all rode in naked. Many peasants wear the large straw
hats seen on the farmlands. It seems there is no rules on
carrying weapons but since it is a minority those who do carry
them are clearly unusual.
Zhou orders Kiet to unload with the help of others. Then he,
Unali, Shu and Fremea enter the side door into the office of the
Inn to speak to the clerk. Once inside they find it a bit cooler
and relaxing. Zhou then presents himself to the clerk and
states his intent to stay for a day maybe two. Zhou then
negotiates for four rooms.
Rooms are set for the third floor. When Kiet learns of this he
groans and moans. But with help from Raban who lifts about three
times as much gear as Kiet, he does his part in the chores of
hauling gear to rooms is a lot easier.
The Inn complex itself is 800 feet wide and 200 feet long. It
covers several buildings and a small pond out back. There are 54
guest rooms most with 1 bed but some have up to 4 beds in them.
Based on the size the Inn can hold 128-256 people at any one time
(1-2 to a bed). The complex has 20 staff working for it. There
is the Inn owner and family (3), 1 desk clerk, 1 stable boy /
groomer, 3 guards, 5 barkeeps and waitress for the tavern, 6
cleaners/stewards and 2 that work in the bath-house. The clerk
informs Zhou the rooms are 2 silver per night which includes 1 meal
with bath included. For a massage that is an extra expense.
The Inn itself takes up most of the property space. The offices
take up the first floor south-west corner which includes simple
sign in desk and vault. In the south center first floor is the
tavern with plenty of room to eat and drink. In the south-east
first floor is the kitchen area for staff to cook meals. In the
north half of the first floor is the Inn rooms. Then the second
and third floor takes up the remainder of the Inn rooms itself.
To the right of the Inn/Tavern is the bath-house. This building
is quite modern and sophisticated with indoor pipes that push
water, steam and heat through the building and the Inn itself.
Though some rooms have fireplaces for winter time during the
summer cool air is sent through vents in the rooms to cool it
down. How this is done isn't clear but likely through a hidden
ice house and maybe some mechanical device or human powered machine.
The bath-house has a public bath area, several private rooms and
a couple of massage rooms for guests. In one room hot coals feed
steam for sauna baths. To the north of the bath-house is a
emergency outhouse but the clerk explains there is a indoor
plumbing system bathroom on each floor. The outside outhouse is
only used when things break down. To the left of the tavern is
the medium sized stables. To the north of the stables is a wagon
shed that can hold 3 or 4 wagons. To the north of the wagon shed
is a shed for Inn storage and supplies. To the north of the Inn
is a small shallow pond with outdoor tables and chairs.
Zhou collects two keys for each room. He then reports that the
party will stay in rooms 39, 40, 41 and 48 all on the third floor.
All four rooms are on the north-west rear side of the Inn. Rooms
39-41 are all next to each other and 48 is across from room 40 so
all clumped together. The clerk reports that the Inn is about
half full and this can be seen by the keys on the wall.
Rooms 39-41 are where Zhou and others will stay. Each room is
40 feet by 40 feet. There is a small outdoor balcony that have
a couple small chairs for relaxing and a small table on the 5 foot
wide balcony. Along the north wall is a small fireplace for winter
use. There is a comfortable bed for 1-2 people along with a nice
couch next to it. There are a couple of soft cushioned wooden
chairs for others to sit near the couch. A small chair and wooden
desk allow for writing or other tasks. Instead of closets the room
has a small clothing chest which can be locked with the room's
key. The wooden door with moderate level lock is in the south.
Room 48 where the guards for the party will stay is a bit bigger
but the style is a degree less. This room is 40 feet by 50 feet.
This room has the door in the north. Two small clothing cabinet
are in the north-east and north-west corners. Then two beds with a
small night stand are on the side of the room for 1-4 people. As
with the other room couch and chairs also allow for guests. A
small simple wooden desk is also in the room. There is also a
fireplace in the south wall and a balcony like the north side to
the street in the south.
Zhou states that Room 39 will have Kiet and Arawn. Kiet is
ordered to get luggage to each room. Room 40 will hold Zhou and
his wife Unali. Room 41 will hold Fremea and Shu. When it seems
some are reluctant to stay in this inn Zhou decides who will join
them.
"Raban will stay as Fremea's guard. We could use a warrior like
Farseeker since he is a bit...more socialable than others in
status. Chion you can stay as you fit in good as well. The others
can get to the other inn." He hands keys to each person for their
own copy. Raban later realizes he could sleep in the bed made for
a Katai person but would have about 3 feet hanging over the side.
The couch seems a bit better to sleep on with only a foot or two
at most hanging out. Chion and Farseeker take the other two beds.
Whitney states a desire to stay in the wagon to sleep. Zhou
asks the clerk and the clerk takes a bit of time to convince but
agrees. The clerk finds it unusual and the house is locked at
night from the door but the inside hallway is not. Zhou has to
convince the clerk that Whitney will not tamper with the other
wagons and that "...some people like to be alone." An implication
to the clerk like that of a low class person in need to stay
around something he knows. The clerk makes it known to Whitney
that stealing from other wagons is a serious crime. Of course he
says this round-about and not in so many obvious ways.
Zhou explains baths can be taken immediately. Rooms are also
ready for use. The clerk in not so many words informs Zhou that
the servants and guards should be at hand but not be so obvious
about it. There is another baron from the south here and he does
not like servants who don't know their place. He had one steward
beat for taking too long on new towels.
Kiet on his third run up the stairs with more luggage sees Kell
in the hallway and approaches. He hands the half-elf a few silver
coins. "My friend, would you please arrange with the innkeeper of
the establishment where you stay to have a bath ready for me late
tonight after I take care of Zhou and his needs? I must reek from
the depths to the heavens."
Kiet then sees others in the hallway milling about going from
room to room. He spots Fremea and approaches. "Madame Fremea,
the food they serve to us 'servants' is usually of poor quality.
I was wondering if you would do me a favor that I think only you
could pull off convincingly. Since you are a 'young one' in this
game, would you impose upon your 'father' to have three different
meals brought to you each evening? Choose one you really want plus
two others that Arawn and I might share in private. I simply wish
to have better food, and Arawn, being who he is, would probably
appreciate the higher class meal. I would, of course, pay for it
myself. I will be required to attend to the family' and won't
likely have time to go about and get my own good food."
Zhou shakes his head. "Nonsense. The meal is included in the
room. I would not be doing my servants and guards good to have
them weak from not eating well. You will eat the same meals we
do." He then turns to go back downstairs. "Of course drinks will
be on your coin. I don't pay my servants to drink and slack all
day!" He raises his voice as he descends down the stairs.
Kell can't help but grin at the fun Zhou is having with his
servant. He then turns to Kiet. "Of course I can arrange to
have a bath ready for you. Consider it done."
[Time: 12:45pm]
Arawn watches as folks plan their errands. "I suggest that any
excursions into the city be left in the hands of those who can
pass as native. Outsiders draw attention and the more given to the
party the higher the chance of a mishap, whether innocently done
or maliciously intended. For now, I think, our priority should be
to locate Tiehul's contact followed by a search for any signs of
the symbol on the parchment and the clues given to us by Tiehul
previously. It would be best to move through local channels and
why I advise waiting until we meet the contact."
Zhou nods, "I agree. But folks are already planning on going
into the city this afternoon. At the very least do not go alone.
If you must draw attention do it with a partner. We don't want
another incident." He glances at Kell. "We should return here
for our evening meal at 6 and eat by sunset."
By now gear is stowed away and the wagon is safely placed in
the wagon house. Horses not used are placed in the stables. The
stable boy gets to work on feeding, watering and grooming the
horses. Ben'dar watches to ensure the small boy will do a proper
job. The youth seems to be good with the horses and well trained.
Some know the boy may need a light tip for his services. Kell
and Whitney ensure the wagon is safe in the wagon shed. At this
time there is two other wagons a bit smaller but of same quality.
One of the patrolling guards watches as the two men unhook the
horses and park the wagon.
Before Kell and the others head to the other inn, Kiet finds
Ha'kell again. "Kell, I need to seek out a shield and two riding
horses...one to ride and one upon which I can keep my belongings.
Would you care to join me? While I am as yet uncomfortable with
these horses, I think I have little choice but to learn to ride
them. My time with them on the wagon has given me a bit of
appreciation for the animals."
Kiet nods, "I'll get you a shield and two horses, one with
riding gear the other to carry your equipment, they'll be stabled
at the inn for us regular people, not those who live in luxury."
Grinning at the acrobat widely, thinking of him living in luxury.
Pondering the possibility of selling his extremely pricey wine,
setting up a long term contract, and all the profit that brings.
He also saw those nice bath robes he could sell in town.
"Do you know how much average horses cost? About six gold each.
Do you want one average for riding and a draft horse, or two
average riding horses? Whilst I will get the best price I can,
well, it will be cheaper than that." Grinning again, anticipating
the thrill of bargaining and getting a deal.
Kiet responds to Kell, "Well, I would prefer to go along and
choose, and Ben'dar is certainly welcome. I think that two
average riding horse would suit my needs. I will normally keep
my belongings on the one while I ride the other. In this way I
can essentially rest them if I am on a journey. I believe that
since I am not even 150 pounds soaking wet, that I might not even
encumber a horse even if I am armed and armored!"
"Also," Kiet adds, "if anyone needs tutoring in Katai, speaking,
reading or writing it, I am quite fluent and willing to teach if I
have the time away from my, um, 'duties'."
Kell approaches Ben'Dar later and asks, "Will you come and help
me pick out the two best horses in the market? I'm not nearly as
skilled at appraising them as you are, my friend."
As those going to the other inn gather out front, Kell speaks
of the rooms. "Sharing rooms is probably safer. Whilst some
privacy is nice, safety here is important. Anyone want to share?"
Ha'kell turns to Z'leyra, "I'm going shopping and browsing as
well if you care to go together for a time? I am particularly
interested in jewels and jewelry, and wines. We can split up
when done with the shops we both want to see, but I wouldn't mind
some company."
[Time: 12:45-2pm]
Over the next hour or so the party splits up and relaxes by
changing clothing, eating a small lunch, drinking a beer and
for the majority the most important thing bathing.
Zhou is first to get a private bath area in the bath house.
He has Kiet to take his clothes and get them cleaned by the
staff. As Zhou undresses and slips into the pool, Kiet prays
the noble won't force him to bath him. But the noble does not.
He asks Kiet to remain in the room for show. Occasionally
in case someone hears he will shout out, "scrub harder!" Zhou
then gets into his silk bath robe and heads back up to his room.
Fremea also acquires one of the small private rooms and ensures
the room is locked. She looks around to ensure there are no
peep holes and finds none. Then she undresses and slips into
the warm water and bathes. It is so good to have her wings
out stretched again. She flexes them o ensure her muscle tone
is still in shape. All the while Raban stands outside the door
scowling at the occasional person who comes near. Soon Fremea
then returns to her robe in the bath robe as well.
Farseeker bathes in the public room where four other men and
two women are bathing. He has no problem doing this as military
barrack life instills in you to wash with others, though usually
men. Farseeker had to inform the clerk that he was a high ranking
military officer, which he is and deserves to use the place. After
a minor bribe the clerk allows it.
Farseeker then takes Fremea back up to the room and allows
Raban to seek out the other Inn and bath-house. Once in the
non-noble public bath-house, Raban finds a public pool about the
size of a small house. Inside the room are a half dozen people.
At least four males of ages 14-30, females bathing from age
10-45 and a few younger children. As Raban enters the room the
chit-chat immediately stops. They stare and then notice they
are doing so and quickly look away. Raban scans the naked bodies
and especially the females. he fines them homely but a couple
are quite good looking for Katai stock. Turning his back on the
people he drops his clothes and slips into the pool. He is not
surprised to hear several gasps. But he isn't sure if it is his
handsome face, his body frame or other masculine features. Soon
the older women quickly leads the children out of the room while
muttering things he can't hear. At least one girl around 16-17
moans and fights her mother on leaving but dresses and rushes
out the bath-house.
Caladan soon joins Raban in the same pool and bathes off and
relaxes. Raban feeling the water soak his pours and his now well
healed wounds takes it all in. After both men dress and exit,
Raban beams. "The mistress has burned most my clothing cause she
said it stunk and was not adequately presentable. She says I
need clothing that will not make me sweat so much. But they
must also be appropriate for a Noble's bodyguard. I am honor
bond to obey all her orders, even ones such as these." Flashing
a gold coin, "But I must get back to my post so speed is
important. Take what measurements you need, I can return about
this same time tomorrow for proper fitting."
Kell has the measurements from Whitney and nods at the giant.
Raban heads back to the Blue Crystal inn dressed in some spare
clothing he has now much cleaner and fresher.
Back at the inn, Arawn has to take a private bath for danger
of his ears. Shu and Unali also take private baths.
Whitney and Chion take baths at the other inn and change
clothing after two weeks on the road.
Kell and Z'leyra take private baths. Ben'dar is the only
one to think this bath thing is weird. Most Zen'da don't
bath as dust is as commonplace as dirt for a rider. But
those who live near the Zen'dan rivers do bath.
One of the last to bath is Kiet at the other inn an hour after
some left the Blue Crystal Inn for the public inn. Tired he
spends some time bathing and relaxing.
At the public Inn three rooms are obtained. One for the two
Zen'dans Ben'dar and Caladan. One room for Kell and Strie'bog.
Both men seem to be men of between worlds. not fully human
nor fully other Strie'bog being half breed from his Green Lady
mother fits in with the half-elf. Finally the third room goes
to Will and Z'leyra.
[Time: 2:00pm]
Zhou finds Arawn, "Join me. We will go find Tiehul's contact.
At least find where he may be located. We'll go fetch Caladan
as a guard escort."
Farseeker and Unali gather up their horses and mount up for
a errand of their own.
At the other Inn Kell, Kiet, Z'leyra and Ben'dar prepare to
leave for exploration of local shops.
Actions? Comments?
Next Update...Friday..
GM: Map of the Blue Crystal Inn is on the website. Look at it
if you want. It is just more details I don't mention here
and maps of the place. Good for visualization. It is in
the links section.
GM: Had to change some dialog around in minor ways. Like
Kell/Kiet's to two parts to fit the scene. Kell responds
to Z'leyra but Z'leyra had no dialog for example. From now
on retro actions will be harder to deal with. For example
if it benefits the party then likely it won't be done.
"In that shop get that item to save us" the day before.
Kind of stuff. :) So actions should be timely from now
on and will deny or act on them as such.

Zhou/Arawn/Caladan - Find info on Tiehul's contact
Farseeker/Unali - Explore, see next update
Kell/Kiet/Z'leyra/Ben'dar - City/Shop exploration
All others - Stay at inns
- Kell has shopping errands for Kiet and himself.
- Z'leyra to explore shops
GM: I need to figure out and coordinate some timelines. Since
the party is splitting up these things get a bit more
difficult. So tomorrow will be considering all this. Will
try to do a quick work up on the update for Friday tomorrow
night with the results of all the tasks. Not sure how
far I will go for the 2-6pm time frame.
