[Recap]
From Kell: [Re: Actions]
[Well fine, now I'm completely spurned into action. Seeing as
Kell can't do anyting for Fremea or Unali, he'll go kick some
hiney. :) Sadly I did have the thought of going and knocking
on the door, gambling for a bit. that fits Kell too. But I have
a new plan; a better plan. ]
Watching Unali and Fremea, Ha'Kell feels very helpless. There
isn't much he can do as they scout but watch for things to react
to, or watch for signs of impending doom. Well thinking to
himself, he's seen those trying to fight the Vong. They are
nothing but doom.
As the man is pushed outside, Kell will very, very quietly whisper
to Kiet and Will, telling them all he can hear.
While the two men are still talking to the third, Kell starts out.
He quietly heads ten feet up the street, then turns back and walks
toward the men. He starts to walk quickly and make a some noise
on purpose. The half-elf's plan includes those men seeing him, and
seeing him a good twenty or thirty feet away, stalking towards the
tavern with purpose. A tall, foul looking man on a mission.
Whilst he's incredibly good looking, he knows how to use that to
his advantage for other purpose as well. Including intimdation
and causing fear. That's something he learned early, bluffing his
way through. Intimidation and a few subtle hints.
Twenty feet away from them, as the beating starts, Kell breaks into
faster walk, making noise intentionally. Scowling and settling
his thug face he approaches them. Reviewing the plan in his head,
knowing it takes the darker side of human nature to make things
like this work. Arrive just as the poor guy getting beaten is
knocked out, or if necessary knock the poor man out himself whilst
making sure to not seriously injure him. Then it's story time.
Time to tell these thugs that this man owes him money too, and
I've been following him, waiting for the moment to collect.
Nothing like mutual scum to become friends.
[From here. It depends on how the thugs react. This all assumes
Ha 'Kell can get close enough and speak with them. After this, Kell
will find out all he can, hoping to be invited into the PB tavern,
maybe even get some kind of invite for not so legal activies.
He'll play along as long as they let him.
If it goes sour, Kell won't go easy. He'll move to a subtle, yet
dangerous position, where he hopes to slit the more dangerous one's
throat before any fight starts. But Kell doesn't want to fight,
he wants to get inside and learn more.
Questions? Scott, I'll be on email this weekend if you want/need
to email.]
GM: Ack. Thanks for the post.

[New Stuff]
[Augado 5th, 1634TH]
[Location: Middle Katai Plains]
[ Pamau Province, Pamau City]
[Time: 10:27pm]
From her vantage point above the street two stories above
the alley Fremea watches the beating. She has seen such before
and even had to do some herself forced upon by her own boss
back in Donara. While her strength doesn't make her a great
thug she can do far more damage in precise surgical attacks
than simply slugging a guy.
From the roof Unali leers down into the shadows watching the
three men shaking down their own client. She realizes this is
a great distraction and goes back to her rope. She decides it
is time to investigate the west side of the building. She
takes the rope and brings it to the west side and begins to
scale over the lip of the roof.
From across the street Kell, Kiet and Will watch the beating.
Of the three Kell has seen such before and even been the victim
of such beatings. Never underestimate the luck of the house as
they tend to always win even if you lose. Kiet and Will has
seen thugs take on hapless victims before but never a full shake
down in this close range before.
Kell tries to spot Unali on the roof but her shadow has left
any normal or even Elven vision. She is gone again. For
Fremea he doesn't see her as well knowing she is still hugging
the east wall on the third floor. At one time the light of
the nearby window was enough to show her location but once the
men came she took cover smartly.
Thinking of the gambling joints, Kell remembers them all too
well. That's what you get when you start as a caravan guard.
Rough places and long nights with nothing to do but gambling.
Cheating is so much easier when you're playing by the campfire,
most gambling halls have too much light, too well placed.
Kell can even recall a tavern run in Ba'ru where a wizard
installed a truth spell on the gaming tables. It made it
hard to cheat or even bluff. It was a clever trick but soon
the rumors spread and the tavern closed up since no one used it.
That either shows how innocent gamblers really are or the
tavern was bad at business. Kell sighs and exhales deeply.
As it escalates with Zep, Kell gets that nasty smile as an idea
forms and takes shape. "Stay here, don't come out for me unless
I'll die," he whispers to Kiet and Will. He leaves his shield and
spear with them and dons his hat.
Kell then walks east across the alley they are in and then toward
the other street. Turning he makes his way down the street a bit
as quiet as he can.
From across the street Fremea can see Kell moving. His shield
and spear are going. She is unclear what he is up to but watches.
Kiet and Will take the shield and spear away from Kell and before
they can even react the half-elf is off on some wild mission.
They grunt slightly at the foolhardy nature of blowing their cover.
If he dies? They could stab him and he'd be dead before they
could even run half way across the street. They both know he'll
be on his own. They'll be able to come to him but it could be
way too late. They wonder if the half-elf realizes this. it
could take 5-6 seconds just to get to him if they ran full
speed. They hope he isn't a fast bleeder.
Another punch to the stomach then a slap to poor Zep. "We
really hate to do this Zep but you know the penalty. It could
be worse. Those thugs over on Qui Mi street will cut off
fingers for just a silver coin's worth of debt."
Kell turns and heads west down the dark street. He makes quick
steps to close the distance. As he walks his persona shifts from
spy to dark intimidating thug. He is glad he left his shield
for this persona it wouldn't fit, then again neither would his
spear. But his Tulwar does still fit. His bastard sword would've
been impressive but shown a bit more social standing than a tulwar.
Kell removes his stealth mindset and makes purposeful steps.
Crunching sand and rocks under his boots to make noise.
"Now listen Zep. We will drop by in the morning if you do not
show up here first light. We expect those papers and as much
coin as you can get. You don't want us to have to find you."
The man slaps Zep not as a force slap but as a reminder slap
tap to ensure the message gets into his head.
By now Zep has a bloody nose, lip and right eye. Zep wasn't
handsome by any means but now he is worse. If the peace brigade
has an idea to remain low key this beating is more than a shake
down but a way to show they mean business. OF course such things
bring undue attention to the group. Zep's stomach rolls from
several punches and if it was daylight his face would be green
from the beer coming back up his throat with the cheese he had.
"I will..I promise...I can borrow-" Zep pleads with the men.
"We don't care how you get it. Just -" The man turns suddenly
as he hears Kell.
Kell tries to show his presence by noise. Besides his boots
and the wind there is not much noise. So he snaps his fingers
as if impatient. He clears his throat and stares at the two
men some 12 feet from them now. He shakes his head but the
humans do not see him clearly enough to make that out.
"Move along stranger. This isn't none of your concern."
The quiet man who has held Zep says releasing the poor man
and using his club to tap the side of his hand.
Kell moves forward and gets within 10 feet. "Is that him?" In
his bully, street thug voice and rushes in to land a few blows on
the poor fool getting beaten. "He owes me money too!" Landing a
few hits, a few well placed hits to knock the man out.
As he moves quickly toward the three men it only takes him
a couple seconds to reach the men. The Brigaders don't even
have time to react fast enough before Kell reaches Zep and
lands a blow to his shoulder.
"Whoa there stranger!" Both men try to grab Kell but in
this dark light it is hard to tell where flesh and air ends.
The first blow goes wild and hits Zep's shoulder. But the
second blow by Kell's fist hits Zep in the side of the head.
It is hard enough along with his other bruises to knock
Zep out. Zep slumps backwards and slides down the side of
the wall.
Unali slips down to the side of the building. She forgets
to make a safety harness and frankly doesn't have enough rope.
She has to keep a hand and arm wrapped around the rope to
remain steady. As she lands on the ledge she realized it
isn't made for walking. She can't understand how Fremea can
remain on the side so easy. then she realizes her feet are small.
But her boots here make it impossible to scale the ledge fast
or steady. She has to make slow baby steps forward one foot
in front of each. She finds she could use the back of her boot
to balance and have her feet face outward, back to the wall.
That is a good way to balance but not move.
It takes a few long moments for Unali to learn to walk on this
ledge or more or less baby step on it. She makes her slow way
to the first window. As she does she realizes a quick escape
by this method will be impossible. If someone opens a window
and attacks her she has to either climb or fall.
The first window Unali checks is dark. She listens for a few
long moments and hears nothing. Balancing with her back to
the wall, feet out and hand on rope she uses her left hand
to check the window. She find sit locked and secure.
Going south down the ledge she finds another window and does
the same. It is quiet. This window like the last has curtains
that are closed. Bending awkwardly down she tries her left
hand and finds the window shakes. It seems to be mid-locked
halfway locked and unlocked. It slides upward a fraction of
a inch about the size of a fingernail. She stops and listens.
If anyone is inside they would react to the slight noise.
After a few long moments she peers into the window and sees
nothing but darkness. Unali is ambidextrous and can use
both hands fully well. But as with most people one hand is
stronger than the other. She knows her left hand won't budge
the window too much. She needs her strong right hand. She
takes the chance and crosses the window to the other side. She
bends down using the rope to hopefully save her life.
Using the angle, hand strength and leverage of the rope she
begins to jerk the window. It begins to move slightly. It
seems it hasn't been opened for some time. She tries to shake
it back and forth to see if the locking device will click open
or move upward. She gets the window open a full inch then
just a bit over an inch. Resting she places fingers into the
window and parts the curtains. But peering inside she sees
nothing but darkness and a bit of brown.
On the other side of the building. Kell turns to the thugs and
growls, "How much does he owe you? What sob story did he use?
Did he use another fake name? Any excuses or ways to pay? That
piece of dung owes me enough for me to take both his arms. I've
been watching him since yesterday." Lashing out with his foot,
that looks like one savage kick, yet Kell knows he aimed it well
for effect only and made it look worse than it was.
"That was stupid stranger." The man who did the beating
the taller of the two stands tall. He pulls his dagger from
his belt. Not needing to beat Zep anymore he stares at the
dark stranger. Neither can see Kell's face in the darkness.
"Who are you?"
Kell moves away a foot from the men. A smirk comes to his
face. The hat covers his face but in this darkness Kell can
see the men well. But even his good night vision doesn't show
their full expressions well. Kell explains he is Bal Tug and
came into town recently, he has been trailing Zep after he
cleaned him out gambling.
Bal Tug explains he is owned good money from Zep. He should
have taken both arms. He was given a deadline to pay back the
day after next. Bal Tug adds, "giving Zep the extra time was
being nice."
Kell kneels down knowing this is a serious blunder if things
go bad. They could bash him easily. But a thug would do this.
He pats Zep on the face. The men stand over Kell and are
a bit confused by this sudden change of events. Bal Tug
explains maybe he'll just take an arm and leg so he can still
work. As Kell pretends to search Zep for money bags he scans
the men. He notices they have no armor and no other weapons
but their fist, club and dagger.
"Listen stranger you need to move along. We'll be..." the
man glances down and finally realizes Zep is out. The man
sighs not being able to have more fun. "Fine. We got our
point across." The man spits down at Zep.
Kell stands and asks how much he owes them.
The Club man simply says, "none of your business."
The Dagger Tall man approaches a foot closer. "I've never
heard of you."
Not getting an answer Kell turns to the tavern and looks
the wall over. He explains he is trying to expand his
local activities.
Tall man says, "This is a private tavern. You'll need to
find your fun elsewhere. We don't just invite anyone inside
to spend their coin. We don't know you stranger."
Club man turns and begins to look up. Kell panics and taps
the man on the shoulder. Why would he look up? The man
glances down again. "Don't touch me." Club man growls. "The
boss..."
That's when Kell taps his coin bag inside his tunic on his
belt. He knows he only has a couple gold coins but has a
bunch of brass bits. But they do make a coin tink noise.
This draws the men's attention back to him.
Tall man says, "What is in it for us to invite you into
our private place?"
Kell glances upward a bit. Taking off his hat he ruffles
his hair as if impatient. But in that move he glances to
see if Fremea is still there. She is staring at him in some
bemused fashion.
At the same time Unali gets the window up another half inch.
It seems the side of the window is so baked in dust, grit and
something else it is lodged shut. Sometimes smoke or ash
will do that so could this room have a fireplace? These
guys don't clean windows but once a decade she guesses.
Finally with a great grunt after almost two minutes working
on the window it pulls open. It does this so fast that it
almost bangs on the top side. She panics and pulls back.
She listens for long moments and waits for an attack ready to
repel down the wall.
But no attack comes. She places her foot inside and finds
a surface almost immediately. It is round and a bit wobbly.
She realizes this is a barrel of some sort. Using her acrobatic
skills she maneuvers her other foot inside and begins to slide
slowly inward into the room. With her butt on the windowsill she
parts the window and looks into the dark room. Still nothing to
see moving around.
Sliding her torso under the window she releases the rope and
makes her final struggle inside. Sliding off the barrel she
draws her dagger ready to react. But nothing comes at her.
Taking a few seconds to let her eyes adjust she stands.
Moving slowly around the edge of the room she realizes this
is some storage room. there are barrels of stuff and crates
or boxes as well along the room. Likely a supply room for the
tavern itself. She can smell faint odors of ale, beer and
tar or oil.
After a minute she finds the door and listens. Hearing
nothing she opens it slowly and peers outside. It is dark
but there are flickers of light in the hallway.
Glancing right it is a dead end. Left it goes on a bit
and turns. She enters the hallway and moves in that direction.
Rounding the corner she sees a door and the hallway going to
the east or right. As she peers around the corner the hallway
is long
There is a door about 16 feet down the hall on the right.
Down further another door about 50 feet. Then way down
the hall she notices a man standing along the south wall
facing north. He is standing with arms crossed as if bored.
He seems to be guarding a door in that direction. The man
is about 80 feet down the hallway.
Glancing across the hall she sees the door about 10 feet
away. Based on the distance she has moved and the roof layout
this must be where the hatch is. It can't be anything else
but the room to the hatch.

Next Update...Friday...
GM: I don't mind cussing if needed for dialogue. In the past
we did have family reading it on the BBS. But since we
are a more elite private list here I doubt any would
complain. But then again I don't know who reads what
emails. So if you have kids then let me know you wish
the list to be still PG oriented. I don't mind personally.
GM: Maps updated showing what Unali sees. Remember if maps mess
up on email check website. They seem to retain the Tabs
properly. I hope folks can understand them. In the past
some said they couldn't read them but never say it till
too late. :<
GM: Off thursday but if get enough stuff can work on update
some Wednesday night since up late.
GM: See map for changes and notes on current positions.
