[Recap]
From John S: [Re: Vegans]
OOC: Oh no I'm trapped in a party of vegans.
GM: Ack. Could be worse? With cannibals.
From Kell: [Re: Toast day]
OOC - Today is March 23. Do you all realize that?....
....
National Toast Day! Hooray! Everyone go out and eat...
GM: Ack. Edited text out since not game related. Let me
know when its doughnut day. Now that's an important day!
From John S: [Re: Actions]
How fitting I was sitting and eating toasted Irish soda bread
as I read this.
..So raise your toast in a... Toast!
GM: Ack. I like just standard toast....
From Arawn: [Re: Actions]
Arawn seemed pensive as the trio investigated the spring
and stream.
"I'm curious if the cave or the spring might be a way in....
GM: Ack. Will edit the text slightly to reflect the new info
I posted on the spring.
From Will: [Re: Actions]
OOC: I had a similar thought but was reluctant to mention it.
Will: "Arawn you may be a vegan but I like the way you...
GM: Ack.
From Kell: [Re: Actions]
[Only 1 response to Toast Day. Dang, loosen up people. :) ]
Examing the unconscious man and listening to the note read out
loud perks up Kell's ears. "By that note he is military and...
This is posed more as a question than anything else. Whilst
Kell thinks it is a good idea to tie him up, just waking him up
and watching him is fine too.
Ha'Kell definitely wants to be there to talk to the man.
GM: Ack. Good post on toast but the Dwarves complained formally
saying the jokes are their area of expertise that includes
fun things. I told them you had the right to post it and
they egged my car.
From Arawn: [Re: Actions]
Arawn grinned. "True," Arawn replied with a slight grin....
GM: Ack.
From Will: [Re: Actions]
"So whats yuor plan?" "or are we just going to play it by ear"
GM: Ack.
From Arawn: [Re: Actions]
"For now I say, play it by ear. My vision is suited for...
GM: Ack. Will edit text to reflect new info posted. But will get
same gist out.
From Will: [Re: Actions]
"personally I prefer invisible, insubstantial and levitated...
GM: Ack. Edited text if applicable due to new info.
From Arawn: [Re: Maps]
OOC: Maybe I'm visualizing this incorrectly but I thought, from
the post, that the entrance was a short distance from the spring,
'30 feet deep'- though I'm not sure if that's 30ft away or if
that means we can see 30ft into the cave.
GM: Ack. Sorry for confusion. Sometimes descriptions can be hard.
I was visualizing what it should be and figured all got
the same thing. Just because you guys don't know what
I'm thinking geesh. Seriously. I'll try better. I was
picturing the exact spot of a spring down south where I've
been called Spring Glen.
From Will: [Re: Actions]
OOC: Actually I think I am the one misreading it and you are
right. I was mixing it up with the one that Fremea saw.
GM: Ack. Sorry. No fancy Google images here. :<
From Will: [Re: Actions]
OOC: Based on new information.
Will says "looks like an underground aquifer (he's suddenly...
GM: Ack.
From Arawn: [Re: Actions]
Arawn released a deep breath and nodded. "As much as I'd love...
GM: Ack.
From Kiet: [Re: Actions]
"By Manekel's beady blue eyes!" Kiet curses out loud. Yeah,...
Name? Rank?
How many more of you are there out here?
To whom are you reporting? How long will it take for them to
arrive here? Do you not understand that these are simply demons,
but demons that can be killed with a sword?
GM: Ack. Good post. Sorry I thought it was a fun scene. :)
Nothing personal. :)
From Fremea: [Re: Actions]
Fremea continues to looking into the cave entrance in the mount.
She will watch it for about 20min. to see if anything comes out.
If she does seem to see anything coming out or see any flyers
going to land or takeoff from the top, she will look for another
position to get to that will allow her telescope to see into the
cave a little bit. After that she will go back to report
everything and anything else.
GM: Ack.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
[New Stuff]
[Augado 10th, 1634TH]
[Location: Middle Katai Plains]
[ Mountains west of Pamau]
[Time: 9:58am]
Fremea sits atop her perch, a tall tree about 115 or 120 feet
tall. The limb she sits on is quite comfortable, though a bit
wet from the rain. She is facing south and a bit south west.
The sun is to her left to the east and a bit north east about
a quarter the way up the sky. The sun is finally starting to
break through the dark clouds but it is hit and miss at times.
Fremea lowers her spyglass and wipes her face. The cave itself
is casting some wild shadows from the clouds and sun. She
could wait 3-4 hours when the sun is high in the sky to allow
the shadows to lengthen out and she might see further inside.
But for now it is just darkness. Too bad the spyglass doesn't
allow for seeing in that dark. While her eyes are well designed
for the darkness she is also affected by the sun's light and it
seems to disrupt that keen night vision. After all her people
aren't called sun-shy for their hate of tans.
Fremea glances around the forest from her height. A bit of
jungle like steam or fog rises from various parts. She can spot
a few lone birds flying this and that way. But she doesn't see
much out of the ordinary. To the north western edge she can
see the gleaming apple trees dot the northern border. She finds
life so fascinating how a deadly volcano just a mile or so away
from her position can kill everything in the valley and now it
thrives with life. She knows she has never been too much into
nature due to her background like Arawn or Strie'bog but she
finds now she can enjoy it more. She raises her spyglass again
to stare at the cave.
The cave itself might be as wide as 3-4 feet. It looks like
it might be 5-6 feet tall in most places. But it looks like
a normal cave to her. She wonders if something inside is
watching her?
-------------
Arawn studies the spring and its surrounding area. This
is the first time he has seen such a spring in this world. He
has heard Sven talk about some huge swamps near his homeland
to the far west called Djanesborg. But this isn't really
a swamp but a forest. While a spring wouldn't be unheard of
in a swamp it is still Arawn's first sight of such here in this
strange world. In the Upper World such places exist but mostly
around Sidh or Chaos lands. In the Sidh lands they tend to
be places of healing and peaceful retreat. Said to be home to
fanciful creatures. In Chaos lands they tend to be places of
dread and death where they sink you to the bottomless depths
to some unknown fate. This one seems so mundane compared to
those in the Upper World. Arawn just sees it sit there without
much of anything special about it.
Will also walks around and studies the animal tracks. Most
are small light tracks from rabbits, foxes, raccoons and the
like. There are a few larger ones like maybe a wolf track but
its smeared and one or two small female deer tracks. Nothing
heavy like moose, bear or male deer tracks seem to be seen. Though
the grass is so wet and the spring is surely to flood at times
during the lunar cycle that such tracks might just simply dissolve.
Arawn peers down into the depths at the underground sunken
depression that might be called a cave. A good swimmer might
go down to it but would not get far without being a water
being or using magic. If the cave does leave to a series of
other tunnels under the ground they could lead to anywhere
or even to the Rising Mount. But how big and safe are they?
Arawn finally speaks up, "I'm curious if the cave or the spring
might be a way in to the mount, a backdoor possibly. The spring
has a large enough opening to create a vortex, maybe one we could
use if we're willing to use magic to make the swim later, but the
cave hopefully has potential. We should check it out, see how far
back it goes and if it might be a way in. When we're done we can
finish circling and figure out what's causing the mist on the
south side of Rising Mount."
Will glances down to Squirt in his arms. The beast is squirming
around like a wild beast. He wonders if he could tie some
rope to the beast, throw it in and see how far it got before
it suddenly forgot it breathes air? Could give them some data
on how far the cave goes. But Kell might be a tad upset about
that so he simply shrugs.
Will turns to Arawn, "Arawn you may be a vegan but I like the
way you think. After all they may have said not to go inside but
they never said not to check and see if we could go inside."
Arawn grinned. "True," Arawn replied with a slight grin.
"Besides, they're just going to ask us how far back it goes when
we get back. Saves us an unnecessary return trip. Although if it
was anything other than Vong I'd just use magic to more safely
check things out. Let's just hope for the best and get back in one
piece."
Will nods, "So what's your plan? Or are we just going to play it
by ear."
"For now I say, play it by ear. My vision is suited for dark
places. Let's move quietly up to the cave mouth and watch for
anything or look for tracks leading in or out of it. If there's
anything in there it should leave a trail we can spot. If the
things seem safe we can head in, striking a light if necessary.
If Vong are present we can go back and alert others or, if you
want to take the risk, I can turn us invisible for a quick peek."
Arawn considers his options. He soon realizes it will take
a bit of magic work and energy. Should this be a false lead
it would make both weak for the future fight to come.
Will looks around the forest listening for animals, "personally
I prefer invisible, insubstantial and levitated with a quick
teleport ready just in case but for now I was planning to avoid
magic if possible. That however would leave us with some open
ground to cover between here and the cave mouth." As Will
scans the forest he wonders if there are Vong magic detecting
bugs? Could they attack upon the first spell? He wonders if
the plan is worth it.
As Will and Arawn gets to the best viewing angle to see
down into the depths Will adds, "looks like an underground aquifer
to me it would probably take a water breathing spell to explore
but it could come up anywhere even under that mountain or near
that steam, if it is steam, we see rising over there."
Arawn considers the risks and benefits. Magic eating bugs.
Dangerous Vong beasts underground that might eat them. Small
deadly cave tunnels that could collapse. Shriveled up hands
that would make him itchy. Magic that would need to be recast
often if not sufficient.
Will also considers the options. If both went swimming that
would mean Squirt would be alone. One would be forced to
remain topside. Then there is the leathers that would shrink
from the water and makes his butt look so much bigger. Maybe
when there is more time and more people the water tunnels could
be investigated. Both men seem to come to the same conclusion
at the same time.
Arawn released a deep breath and nodded. "As much as I'd love
to explore its depths right now let's wait until we've finished
circling Rising Mount. After we've regrouped with the others we
can decide if it's worth investigating."
Will nods and both men set off toward the eastern forest
sections. Squirt seems to hiss when he leaves the tree
where the rabbit is hiding. To ruin his fun is just mean.
He looks up to Will and hisses. Will just glances down
and growls. That startles Squirt who seems to shrink in
his arms and cowers a bit.
Arawn gives one final quick inspection of the tree log
where Squirt found the rabbit enter. It seems to be a simple
spruce tree long dead. The dampness and animals have somewhat
halted the decay and it looks like a normal dying tree in
any forest in the world. Aside from the fact that a brown
rabbit finds it home rather than some hollow. Arawn shrugs
and catches up to Will and Squirt.
-------------
Zhou asks, "So is he local military or a ally of the Vong?"
Examing the unconscious man and listening to the note read out
loud perks up Kell's ears. "By that note he is military and not
a Vong ally. Why would any Vong agent mention Gray headed
creatures, flying disk, or flying things. He'd know what and how
they are."
"Still, better to not take any chances when he wakes up. Let's
tie him up, gently, to a tree so we don't have to worry about him
running away. Take away his weapons only, and let's not threaten
him. Make it clear that tying him up is only for our protection,
we may need him as an ally. Then we can talk to him and see what
he knows. Why he is here. Is anyone else here? And so on."
From behind her black mask, Unali's muffled voice is heard as
she also studies the man's notes. "I don't see why he would be
allied with the Vong. His notes seem to indicate he is Katai
military. His gear tells the same story. No brigand, but a scout.
Tying him up will antagonize him. Take his weapons away and prop
him up against a tree. I will watch him till he wakes up again."
With orders given, Unali places her daggers in her belt sheaths.
She crosses her arms in that black uniform she has. Her face
covered in that mask makes her look almost like she is not there.
Only the sun's rays shine down on her back give any hint of her
location unless one is staring at her for long.
Unali makes her way away as Raban hauls the man to a large tree
with a large base. Caladan and Kell take away the man's weapons
and props him against the tree. Unali moves to a tree to the
left of the man against another tree. She watches merging into
the black shadows of the tree limbs. She begins to stare to
watch the man only about 5 feet away. Close enough to react
but also far away to give the man some confidence when he wakes up.
Kiet comes back into the camp area after some long moments
in the bushes watching the party. "By Manekel's beady blue eyes!"
Kiet curses out loud. Yeah, the newcomer is subdued, but now Kiet
has to deal with the shame both of being caught unawares...and
literally with his pants down, as well as his being exposed to
Unali!
Kiet crosses his arms in disgust. He knows being around
people like this for long periods has its risks in privacy.
Z'leyra has stripped down a few times to go into eagle form.
Raban had his clothes torn to shreds by that large worm.
Word was that Arawn even stripped down to swim to go after
some brain creature at Lake Oca. Unali has changed in bushes
and shown some skin. Worse yet, Zhou dressed in front of
Kiet as Kiet help to tailor his clothes. Even if it was some
role, seeing Zhou naked wasn't fun at all. But these things
seem to happen and bound to happen more often.
Kiet eyes the stranger with near murder in his eyes while the
others search him. Such a violation is insufferable alone but to
further the crime by embarrassing Kiet in front of Unali! Kiet
knows this man is just doing his job...and too well at that!...but
it means but little to him until he has a chance to calm down.
Kiet glances over to Unali but can't read her face with that
darn mask on. How did she react aside from that grin? Was
it a good or bad grin? He knows he doesn't have the great
face of Raban or the body like Farseeker but he is confident
in his own body. Then he realizes she didn't giggle so that's
a good thing. he slowly raises his chin in some growing
confidence. He notices Unali watching the stranger and figures
she has forgotten or doesn't care about the situation.
After the others have searched the unconscious man, Kiet trusses
him up tightly, not worrying at all about his health, well being
or circulation. When he's done Kiet is mightily tempted to kick
the intruder to a pulp, but something stops him. He's not sure
who the man is, but it's obvious he's not a Vong ally nor just a
lost villager. He's also lucky that he's not got a hole bored
through him by an angrily cast Smokeless Flame!
Oh, the indignities! Kiet is happy to administer a few slaps to
wake the little bastard up. And then the questioning can begin.
Kiet then hopes he answers poorly so that his revenge might be
administered...oh, he hopes!
Kiet knows the man could be sleeping for a good 20-25 minutes
depending on the blow Unali gave him. But she also knows how
to give light love taps for such cases.
After almost ten minutes the man slowly starts to stir. The man
has dark brown pants and rather nicely crafted leather belt
for someone of his station. His boots are clearly military
style or military issue. Made for long term use in the wilderness
rather than some city person. The man wears a light tan and
brown tunic that is loose fitting and comfortable. The man
has a sweatband around his head which some use to block sweat
from their eyes as they fight. For those who recall Cholan
he wore such things. His arms are mostly bare with short
sleeves going to just above his elbow. But on his wrists
he has two small cloth like wraps. About the size of a middle
finger from tip to base it might even be called a light
form of gauntlet. But many use such strips to help in wrist
movements and to prevent wet hands.
Kiet doesn't like the man being not in ropes but Unali has
given the orders. But where could the man go surrounded by
half a dozen people?
The man slowly raises up his head and peers within slightly
closed eyes. Some can tell he is clearly scanning the camp
to judge his situation. A typical trick trained people will
do. When the man sees others stare at him he opens his eyes
wide. He raises a hand to his left side of the face to rub
the small bruise Unali gifted him. "Owww. What tree fell
on me?" The man then notices Raban and grunts. "Ahhh. I
see." The man sits up a bit more straighter and gets a better
look around.
"You people need to leave this valley immediately. There
is a...danger around. Here I can help guide you folks out of
here." He begins to stand but Kiet wiggles a finger in his
face to show that isn't a good idea. The man grunts. "You
should trust me. This isn't a good time for ..."
The man trails off as he notices Strie'bogs greenish skin
and Kell's odd long hair and hat. Something about the man's
features strike the man. He sees the giant and the strange
firesnake on Caladan's shoulders. He wonders why most of these
people stand around in cloaks. Cloaks are for fancy people
not villagers. Who are these people.
From the shadow of the tree Unali speaks in her muffled masked
tone, "You seem like an unlikely person to meet, so far out, and
so close to a base of evil creatures. Many in my band of travelers
fear you are in league with these crab like creatures, helping
them take over these lands. We have found many already that are
too willing to help them and destroy my Katai. Yet something
tells me you might be different. Speak up and assure me, that
your business is for Katai and not for the Vong, there is no
time to waste."
Kiet lowers his face peering down with a slight shake to
his head. How can she just reveal that right away to this
stranger? Doesn't she know the first thing of interrogation
never reveal more than the prisoner should know? But then
she has a point there is little time. He looks up and
judges the man's face.
The man looks over to the shadows and squints. He finally
sees the form of Unali and a slight jolt is seen to his body
as he moves away instinctively. "A night demon!" But only
Kiet hears the man whisper this. Clearly Unali's uniform seems
to make an impression and the stories told in dark Katai taverns
don't seem to help but they don't hurt as well. After a few
moments the man seems to regain his composure and notices he
isn't dead. Maybe those demons don't kill on first sight
like the stories say?
"I ...I don't know these Vong you speak of." The man
slowly pauses and begins to piece things together. The
armor, the weapons, the strange people around him seem
to form a war party? "You clearly know of the danger I
speak of..."
Farseeker finally speaks up, "you are military right? Which
House group?"
The man looks at the tall warrior, his face begins to speak
like if in protest. Then he notices his weapons are gone and
notes missing. He sighs and figures no use denying it now.
"Yes. I am from House Katai. The Master General issued our
direct orders to find these creatures. Are they called the
Vong?" Farseeker nods. "So you are after these creatures as
well then?"
Zhou approaches with his cape flowing in the breeze. He
hopes to regain some control over this before the others get
this out of control. It would be no good to have the military
help the party only to arrest and kill them after. "We have
been unlucky to encounter them. After finding the villages
destroyed we tracked them here. They killed a dear friend of
ours and so we sought to deal with it. If you do not mind
we do have some questions."
Kell asks why he is here and are others here.
"I've been sent to scout the valley. We had an idea they might
be here based on the maps. The local villages all destroyed
by these...Vong things...the valley was almost in the center
of the disaster. My...others are not with me. I'm alone here
in the valley. I did have a partner but he left with a girl
that came into the valley a couple of hours ago. Said she
survived a village slaughter to the south where one of the
creatures was killed. She thought they were following her
and ran here. I suspect she thought you were chasing her?
I saw you enter the south end of the valley from my location
where I was scouting. If I saw you then they might have. But
I doubt it. I've not seen them in a couple of days. The
others in my unit may have moved on. But they are some
distance away. Maybe half a day's ride. The commander may
have moved them to look for more survivors. I sent word
of the creatures here. They could arrive soon if the
commander takes the report in full."
Kiet asks the man his name and rank. He also asks how
many more of his unit are there around.
"Captain Li Yong of the Imperial Army, Katai House Guard.
Special Detached Service." With that his hand slips to his
wrist to adjust his left wrist band. Then he raises his right
hand to give a semi mock salute.
"Stop!" Farseeker pounces forward.
The man stops and looks up.
"Open your palm!" Farseeker orders.
Kiet confused grasps the man's wrist and applies pressure to
make his hand open. Inside a small metal needle pen is seen.
Kiet gently grabs it.
"No need to do that. We are friends." Farseeker in a more
calm voice tells the man.
"Duty. If captured. I still don't know who you people are.
I can't just be a traitor to our unit by giving info you may
need or abuse." The man simply says and places his hands now
wrist up to display them on his lap.
Kiet looks the pen about the length of a baby finger and
inspects it.
Farseeker speaks down to Kiet. "Poison. A typical military
action. When caught as prisoner...It was hidden in his wrist
band. I've seen it done before. We won't lose another
prisoner to foolishness."
"How do I know your not the Vong allies?" The man looks
around.
Farseeker pulls up his sleeve and reveals his upper well
muscled arms. "No tattoo."
Caladan, Ben'dar, Chion, Strie'bog and Zhou also do this
to reveal no marks.
"Fine. Could...could I tap your nose?" The man asks.
Zhou nods in memory of Nom's disguise. To placate the
man the noble leans down and nods. Captain Yong gives a
light tap to his nose. Then a bit of a harder tap. The
Captain then nods.
"Fine. If you are not from that Peace Brigade I don't
know who you may be but this is a dangerous thing for
civilians. When the others arrive I strongly recommend
you let us do the work and you leave."
Kiet ignores the man and re-asks about his unit strength.
Clearly the Captain doesn't know the party's skill set.
"My unit depends on how spread out they are. Over 100
men but with many in other villages or exploring it could
be far less by now. It may even take time to gather up all
the men." The man closes his hands and looks around more
closer at the party.
Kiet asks about the man's leadership. How long before they
might arrive. "Do you not understand that these are simply
demons, but demons that can be killed with a sword?"
Captain Yong glances at Unali speaking of demons. "We know
they can be killed. But we've seen their results. Hundreds
killed in the area. Many missing all together. Reports have
come in from the Master General of possible situations like this
around the Empire. My general is who I report to. It could
take as fast as half a day or as long as two days to get here
depending on how far they may have moved. My partner can
track them though."
"So you may be as far as what? Twenty miles away?" Zhou asks.
"We were around ten miles away when I came here. But again
their camp is set to move so not to be found by those flying
things. If they spot the men they'll be slaughtered. They
have to move around and in random fashion. This is why they
aren't no bigger than a half dozen in a patrol rather than all
100 men in one group." Captain Yong glances to Farseeker. "It
was only duty. I did not understand who you were. I will not
do it again. I now know better. I couldn't risk being
captured and helping the enemy."
"The enemy of my enemy..." Farseeker nods.
Caladan leans to Ben'dar and whispers. "Isn't it more like
the enemy's girlfriend is a girl I want? Or something like that?"
He grins and Ben'dar just grunts from his semi foul mood.
Caladan shrugs nothing seems to cheer Ben'dar up these days.
"May I stand now?" Captain Yong asks.
Unali nods and Kiet lets the man up. he stretches his
legs.
"I've seen only a few of these Vong in the forest. But
they only go out when need to it seems. There doesn't seem
to be patrols. A day ago we did see one of those flying things
but it zoomed away. It is clear they are in the big rock there.
But we couldn't scout a obvious way in." The man places hands
on his hips not from frustration but as a sign that he feels
naked without his sword.
Zhou approaches Unali and whispers as Farseeker and Captain
Yong talk about the man's horse and where it migth be.
"This is dangerous. If we get their help they'll turn on us.
Maybe we should tie him up or let him go but without his
horse. By the time he gets back to his people we might be
done? If we use them and they see just one...special skill
of ours then its all over for us." The nervous noble whispers
to Unali and glances at Yong.
"...horse is tied up along the north ridge. " Captain Yong
finishes up speaking to Farseeker.
-------------
As Arawn and Will move eastern, the Druid watches for strange
plants but finds the typical variety. Some of the blue berry
bushes in this section still have a strand of berries on them
and look to be nice. But nothing strange or Vongish to his
eyes. At the edge of the north forest directly north of the
Rising Mount the two break the growth to look at the north
face of the mountain. Both can see a black area which looks
like a cavity in the rock. From this angle though the detail
is vague and with the naked eye it isn't easy to figure out.
But it is clearly a cave or depression. But it is way up
on the cliff side.
Arawn decides to take a take a sample of the ash around the
edge of the forest. But he suddenly realizes he forgot his
vials and flasks on his horse. He forgot to bring his bag.
So he can't take a sample but it isn't as if the ash will
disappear any time soon. he grabs a nearby crystal rock and
examines it closer. The crystal itself is just that a light
non high quality gem crystal. It is almost like those silly
rocks miners find in rivers that shine and gleam like gold
but is worth nothing - fake gold. Clearly these rocks are
formed from the lava field that once was here. In theory
some could contain coal or other minerals but the crystal
seems just a byproduct of the lava rock.
