[Recap]
From Kiet: [Re: Gear]
Awwww...shucky-darns...(kicking small rock on ground)...a
compliment....goshk...
Oops...maybe I need to power-down a little....NOT!
Silly question...what happened to their bowmen? I notice
there were no bows recovered. I'd like to make sure they
are ...um...handled.
"Arawn? What the heck was that, exactly? That light."
GM: Ack. Yep. I like use of gear when its with the brain.
Some do warehouses of weapons or magic items to improve
their odds or ensure damage. But even a man with a
simple stick can do better if used the brain. So I'd figure
I'd say something to you. The archers were in the bush
feet from you and Arawn to the left. They left their bows.
They are useless for selling though since primitive and
small. Plus the Dwarves didn't note them on the list.
From Kiet: [Re: Actions]
Kiet heads back to the camp area, and where the burning...
Assuming that Arawn or someone else might inform us all about
the sword being a magical item, Kiet picks up the sword and
casts a maximum EL Detection spell to determine its usefulness.
Who knows... maybe Zabyra can have a magic sword of her own.
"Unless one of us old-timers really needs this sword, ...
OOC...BTW...what kind of weapon is it?
Kiet looks over to his half-elf friend and grimaces. "That...
Kiet had been busy first fighting some of the goblin runts,...
OOC again...I didn't see where Zabyra took any damage...
Kiet doesn't really see any purpose to going back to sleep.
There was still work to do too. Kiet goes over to his horse
to check out Ma Siwang. He's more concerned over that horse
than some other things. Kiet doesn't savor the idea of walking
to Ticasi. Then, he gets to work helping drag these disgusting
creature's bodies downwind, away from camp. Gods they smell
awful! Kiet hopes the wind doesn't change direction. He says
a short prayer in that language that it might be so.
GM: Ack. Detection is a class of thing. So you cast it to see if
its magical? IT won't detail properties like a Perception
spell or whatever that Priestly one is. It is a normal sword
of average forge talent. Not a great or short sword. As
to the properties not discovered yet.
From Kiet: [Re: Actions]
After Kell's disgusting comment about how the goblins might
taste, Kiet flatly retorts "I'd sooner eat Squirt."
GM: Ack.
From Arawn: [Re: Actions]
Sleep Sight/Watchful Sleep:
Is it possible for the caster to be awakened by others? Or to
will themselves to wake up prior to end of the spell?
Just something to mull over, but I imagine the spell isn't
meant to create limitations on the spell's benefactor. Would it
make sense to be able to cast the spell so that the area of
effect is based on the EL but the duration of sleep is designated
by the caster prior to resting? In other words, if a druid cast
Sleep Sight at EL 5 (which would cover a 120' diameter and could
last up to 6 hours) could he set it so the spells ends after
only 4 hours while still having a 120' diameter area of effect?
If the consensus is for casters of these spells to have a physical
watch Arawn would prefer the shift just before the dawn as it's
the darkest part of the night and he's one of the few in a good
position to stand watch then. Otherwise he can adjust the EL of
his spell so that he wakes up in a decent amount of time to stand
watch (or just adjust the time if this is allowed, as mentioned
above).
As far as other casters getting 8 hours of sleep without a watch,
Arawn's indifferent to this so long as everyone in the party is
able to get enough sleep.
Healing in the aftermath of the battle:
If Z'leyra or someone else wants to practice their healing skills
or magic Arawn will limit himself to tending to Zabyra so the
other healers can focus on Reddof and Pyan. Arawn will use a
Healing Hand prayer (max EL) if Zabyra's okay with that.
Otherwise, if Z'leyra prefers, he can use Healing Mist as an
area of effect spell to heal the group. If any of the horses
were injured to a point of concern he'll heal them as well,
using Healing Mist if more than one is in need.
David/Kiet, I noticed in your update that you couldn't find
where Zabyra was injured in the post. It was in Update #23,
6hp of damage.
Goblin and Bandit Items:
On behalf of the party, Arawn will use Mana Sensing on the
horses and items gathered from both groups. He'll Mana Read
anything he senses as magical.
Arawn will see to the horses needs as best he can while they
remain with the party, communicating on their behalf and is
mainly interested in trying to make sure the horses will be sold
off to those who will treat them well.
The only items he's interested in at the moment are the poison
darts. He'd like to keep two for future study (mainly to
understand the poison, how to create it and the antidote through
Herbalism), though if Fremea has this knowledge he can ask her
for the information instead and jot this down on a sheet of
paper.

As much as he wanted to chase after his equine friends...
[Kiet: "Arawn? What the heck was that, exactly? That light."]
"Belief," he replied in a matter-of-fact manner. Sensing...
Later, as the druid looked over the assorted items and
horses gathered over the last several days he gave a shrug as
Kiet presented the idea of passing a magical blade on to one
of the party's recently acquired travel partners. It wasn't
in Arawn's nature to be greedy and it was clear to those who
knew him that his gesture was one of assent.

Arawn stood over the unconscious and now bound goblin, a mixture
of sadness and concern clouding his fair face.
"We should see if a larger camp exists nearby, for ...
[If no one speaks up in regards to this Arawn will cast
Communicate at max EL along with Hidden Truth at max EL after
the goblin wakes op to assist with the interrogation]
GM: Ack .For WS you sleep till duration ends or threat comes.
SS spell is same thing. So if you intend to do sentry
duty someone could draw a dagger and try to plunge it in
your chest to threaten you awake? :) EL only affects duration
and range. If we start to allow varying for things like
this it opens up a whole slew of things. Cast a Fire Dart
to reach that target X away but lower the damage to not kill
him before he leaves. That could lead to bunch of issues with
spells. So this is why EL is set in stone. You can vary
a EL up to your Max. But for items you can't so the brooch
and Unali's scabbard is set in stone on effects. Since you
are casting the spell you are free to lower the effects. It
is up to the 4 others for a consenus on how they feel about
sleep spells - Fremea, Kiet, Zabyra and Pyan. So they can
view their opinions. Until then will assume you three sleep
the full duration and the others lose more sleep. You saw
the math I came up with. I'm just a objective GM showing
the facts. I careless but as a player I'd hate losing almost
an hour of sleep while you guys get full sleep. :) Was hoping
more folks would comment on Healing Mist by now. I will need
to decide on that spell soon. Mana Sense the horses? :) As
to the darts remember they are useless in a day or two. So
to research them would need to find a local shop or this
area again. It may be strong fast acting but short duration
on its life cycle. Good RP on the spell explanation to Kiet.
From Kiet: [Re: Actions]
Kiet doesn't really like these plans much. ...
"No, I don't think either of us should go. If ...
GM: Ack. You actually did a public reply to a CCed email.
I only include here since it was posted. Got to be careful
what you reply at times. Been there. Done that Goofed
up - I mean the dwarves did many times.
From Pyan: [Re: Tent]
Take one tent..
GM: Ack. Taken. I deleted the post but got it. Just too
lazy to add the one line back here. :)

[New Stuff]
[Western Marentia - Forest]
[Novehas 28th, 1634TH]
[Time: 2:43 pm]
Arawn and Kiet discuss finding this lightning damaged tree.
Kiet doesn't really like these plans much. Translocation
requires very precise knowledge...and there are too many steps
in this proposal that could go wrong.
"No, I don't think either of us should go. If something
happens and we fail, or fail to return, it truly is harm upon
our companions. We have a mission to complete. For now, I
will just stay here and continue it," says Kiet.
"I understand," Arawn replied. "I'll be going and if things
go well for me I'll see if I may bring back a gift for you."
[Time: 6:08 pm]
At the Roadside inn which is just a way station for a local
village to the north the party finds people to sell the
bandit treasure to including the innkeeper. Kiet and Kell
go over the status and horse details while Kell takes the
bulk of the selling duties using his skills.
Most horses in a city needing them can sell for 2-6 gold.
But these 6 riding horses have been over used. Arawn did
regrow one set of teeth. But age and wear has shown. In
this isolated area of western Marentia - from a city like
even Malnon some 180 miles away - horses can be used by
the locals. But the income levels are much more depressed.
The party could go back to Malnon to sell or to Zara another
few hundred miles away. But taking 6 horses would need more
expense. One horse does sell well thanks to Kell's silver
tongue for 5 gold to a merchant in the area. But the others
only get 33, 34, 37, 17 and 15 silver each. The high ones
go to the Inn keepers but the others go to local farmers
who need new horses. The party gains 186 silver from the
horses after they are checked for brands. A local guard
ensures they are not poached animals but no brands are on
the horses. So Kell figures the group got about 30% less
than a city but that is to be expected.
The 6 bandit swords which are also used sell for 18 silver.
The local general shop buys the 6 fighting daggers as those
things are popular with hunters in the area. He pays 3 silver
the for the lot. The assorted clothing is also taken by
the general shop for 2 silver.
The dart blow tubes take time to sell as most don't use them.
But a tanner buys them for 1 silver. No one buys the darts
as they will be useless in a couple days.
The inn keeper pays for the rum and cheap inn for 2 silver.
So the party gains a bit over 21 gold from the bandits.
All in all party gets 24 gold and change from bandits.

[Western Marentia - Forest]
[Decalis 1st, 1634TH]
[Time: 4:25:50 am]
As much as he wanted to chase after his equine friends Arawn
made the difficult decision to remain at camp. Reddof needed to
be looked over the camp guarded until the others returned from
the hunt. Luckily it was but a short time later that they
arrived, horses in tow, to find the Alfar cleaning the bloody
grime threatening to crust along Reddof's wounds. He signaled
Z'leyra over so the shaman could use her medical knowledge of the
human form to more thoroughly asses the severity of the warrior's
injuries.
Kiet looks to Arawn who is checking on Reddof's wounds.
"Arawn? What the heck was that, exactly? That light."
Kiet heads back to the camp area, and where the burning Goblin
King (or whatever he was) lies. Kiet moves over to relieve him
of his weapon and sets it aside.
Kiet wields the sword back and forth to test the lightness
of the sword. The blade itself is crude with minimal forge
time but sturdy enough to still kill.
"Unless one of us old-timers really needs this sword, perhaps
one of the newcomers might be allowed to claim it. If Pyandalgor
can use it, I recommend him for it...he has contributed well in
the fights. If not, and if no one else in our group desires it,
perhaps those merely traveling with us might be permitted to
use it until our destination is reached."
Kell shrugs not caring for the sword but then scowls. "You
just pick up a magical sword without gloves or such? I had
a long lost uncle who grabbed a coin off the road. Turned
out to be cursed and let's say he never left the outhouse
more than 3 hours at a time."
Kell looks at the burnt goblin. He asks Kiet about taking a
taste since Kiet took pieces of hippogriff.
Kiet looks over to his half-elf friend and grimaces. "That
is just disgusting!" It practically turns his stomach. They
smell bad enough alive, but really bad died and fried. Kiet was
just thankful it worked. "I dare you to try a taste."
Kell glances to the acrobat and then around wondering who
heard that. The women are all busy so showing the manly
art of taking dares is just for Kiet. Kell crouches down
bending his knees and looks at the body. He notices a burnt
set of fingers. Looks like lots of burnt flash on the chest.
But there is the ear that looks like fried pig tail. Kell
shrugs and yanks the burnt ear off. He sniffs it and takes
a piece of the flesh. He turns away as he gulps but then
turns back and shrugs. "Back home skunks and even road kill
by wagons was tasty if one didn't want to waste food. Tastes
just like pig feet actually or when a potato falls in a hot
broth." He smiles and looks at the piece of ear and raises
it toward Kiet.
After Kell's disgusting comment about how the goblins might
taste, Kiet flatly retorts "I'd sooner eat Squirt."
Then Corona lands nearby causing Kiet to get interrupted in
his thoughts. Almost in the nick of time for that ear offering.
Kell considers a retort but feigns hurt. It has been several
weeks since he saw Squirt. But with the forests and such
it would've been bad to bring him. Then Kell realizes a good
retort, "couldn't be worse than snakes that like you!"
Kiet and Kell inspect the sword waiting for an answer when
Kell smiles and talks about Zabyra who is now dressing in
Z'leyra's tent.
Kiet had been busy first fighting some of the goblin runts,
then their Daddy. He didn't really have time to spend admiring
a dancers form. "Well," he says to Kell, "you can go help her
dress that wound...if it's her left arm the two of you will
have something in common!"
Kell grins, "at least I get hurt don't run around setting
fires when I run like a sundevil in heat."
Kiet and Kell check out the horses and ensure all are in good
shape. Aside from minor scratches from being pushed in the dark
by mad goblins they are fine. The bushes did not have thorns
so it is just very minor things. Both ensure all horses are
tied up and secure.
Kell, Kiet, Unali and Red Shirt start to haul goblin bodies
away from camp. The sun will be up in only a couple hours but
it is best to keep more predators away for now
Arawn ensures the others are stable while Z'leyra checks out
Reddof. She finds the arrows in his back were lucky to hit
just to the right of his liver and not deep enough to do
lung damage.
While Z'leyra did her checking, Arawn looked in on the others,
horses included, when Kiet asked him about the divine light.
"Belief," he replied in a matter-of-fact manner. Sensing
that a clearer answer might be needed he continued after a
slight pause.
"It is a blessing of the divine, much as a human priest
may use a holy symbol to repel the undead. The servants of
the Eldest Serpent cannot abide the true glory of the Sidh.
That light, its presence, reminds them of their broken
connection to an ancient glory and bringing unto their spirits
both fear and dismay."
[Time: 4:28 am]
Z'leyra did the basic healing to improve magical healing
of the three wounded. Pyan doesn't even need a bandage.
Reddof with his 3 holes were the worst. If he had been on
his own for a few minutes he'd be dead. Z'leyra stabilizes
him while the others clean up.
Arawn then gathers Reddof, Zabyra and Pyan together. He
explains to the new ones that he has the ability to heal
them for now. They should just stay put as the harmless
mist falls on them.
Soon the green mist falls like a faint snow around the
3 wounded. The entire combat was just 30 seconds or so
and it is amazing that only 3 got hurt with only one serious.
Even with warning the creatures had to run fast toward
the camp to avoid detection till last second. The fact
that arrows hit Reddof was either lucky or well planned.
Proof that even sleep spells don't seem to work 100% of
the time.
Soon Pyan is full healed first than Zabyra and then 30
or so seconds later Reddof. Bandages are removed form
Zabyra and he is checked out fine.
[Time: 4:57 am]
Arawn stood over the unconscious and now bound goblin, a mixture
of sadness and concern clouding his fair face.
"We should see if a larger camp exists nearby, for our sake and
those of other travelers. And to see if any prisoners exist that
may need rescue."
Arawn waited to make sure that all could hear him before he
asked,
"Does anyone speak the goblin tongue? Else, if Z'leyra would
be so kind, perhaps her necklace might be of use here?"
Kell grimaces, "taint that necklace with his...slime. The
odor alone would be on that necklace for years."
The goblin snarls and spits and tries to gnaw at his ropes
to no avail. He glares and hisses at Arawn mostly.
Arawn casts a communicate spell then a priest spell to
be truthsayer.
Arawn asks the first question. Do the goblins have prisoners?.
"Many elves and humans so we can eat them later!"
Arawn shakes his head. He asks if there is one elf and 1
human in their camp.
"You idiot! I said we had 30 humans and 20 elves."
Arawn asks again. You have 1 Elf?"
"Yes"
One Human?
"Yes."
Arawn asks about the village and how many goblins are there
defenses.
"Over a thousand of us! We have many powerful magics."
Arawn asks if they had 30 goblins.
"Yes."
Arawn considers asking the location but stands. He
explains the creature is lying. No prisoners. Less than
30 goblins most are females. Arawn tells Kiet to slay
him.
Kiet smiles and considers his blade but it would taint
his nice metal. So he drags the goblin to his horse and
has the horse trample him to death. A fitting revenge
for the horses.
Kell asks how he learned he was lying. Arawn explains
he used a priest truth spell. If ask the correct leading
questions like asking if 1 human was there and if he says
yes and lie was detected then obviously none exist.
Kell nods, "sounds like a good thing to do. When I sold
that merchant a nice plate armor for 200 gold I could've
used that spell."
Arawn smiles to himself knowing the trader just exaggerated
a bit on that with a little white trader lie.
Arawn considers finding the camp but killing goblins to rescue
folks is one thing. To slaughter females and possible goblin
runts even for a Sidh is a bit much. Plus the party will be
leaving in a couple hours. Plus what loot could there be in
such a vile place?
[Time: 5:02 am]
Arawn had checked the bandit items to find no magic sources
at all. Now he reaches for the goblin sword. He closes his
eyes and feels the sword's energy. Quickly the Alfar learns
the sword is better improved for hitting and reduction of
metal damage to the sword - it breaks less. He finds that
the sword is aligned to his group with very little power
behind it not even an magician skill. The goblin King or
Elite goblin whatever he was must've got it from some Sidh
since it wasn't a Kotothi spell. He quickly figures out
that the spell seems to be an Abandon spell. Why anyone
would put a spell that makes folks flee away from the deadly
weapon he has no clue. Unless its a defense tactic.
Kiet looks intently and Arawn explains to the party about
the sword.
[Time: 5:55 am]
The party does not sleep much after that. Though Red Shirt
and Pyan do sleep about 30 minutes more. Mostly the party
packs up and gets ready to leave.
[Time: 6:18 am]
Back on the road the party heads west heading to the border
which should be 20 miles or so away at the end of the forest.
The day ends up mostly cloudy all day with temperatures in
the forest ranging from 33 to 53.
[Time: 1:04 pm]
Snow starts to fall onto the forest blanketing the trees and
road with a light covering. But it is mostly light only about
an inch after 45 min of off and on snow fall. But it is enough
to cause the cold and dampness to dampen the mood.
[Time: 2:07 pm]
Finally it stops snowing as the party reaches the border.
The border itself is just 3 small structures. There is a guard
shack that might hold 2 maybe 3 people in it. It has a small
desk and chairs and a map on the wall that has not been updated
in probably 30 years. Papers and candles strew the desk and
table inside the shack.
There is a square building that is probably a small barrack
for a dozen or so troops. There is no major fort or outpost
here as this is the last western bastion of Marentian forces.
This small group is in theory all that stops border incursions.
It has been 80 years or so since Marentia invaded Thaliba but
had to withdraw. Since then there is a uneasy but restful peace.
It is clear the capital feels this border is safe. But the party
figures the village of the roadside inn will be the first victims
of any major invasion.
The other building looks like it has a sturdy lock and looks like
a small storage shed for supplies for the troops here. A small
open corral for horses is by the barracks but no barn. That
must mean the horses are rotated often out of here.
A small sign in Marentian, Zen'dali, Bhomti and Ba'ru.
It reads, "Now leaving Marentia. Enter into Thaliba with
awareness and peace. Be proper citizens of Marentia and
represent the kingdom well." The sign must've been painted
a half century ago. Some letters are decayed or missing
and the sign itself shows targets for bird droppings.
There are about 5 horses in the corral and 3 at the shack
tied up nearby. There are 3 guards milling around going back
and forth. Looks like 4 are in front of the shack on a single
wooden bench. Three of the guards rise at the party. One
who looks like a sergeant comes over.
"State your intended destination."
Z'leyra explains Ticasi.
"Many miles away. A long grueling trip. My suggestion
is go to Porta and get a ship. But if you insist on
moving by horse then do so." His voice changes to a low
drone as if he has given this speech thousands of times.
"Once inside the border you are ONLY allowed on the road.
Fortress Thalib and the city are off limits. You may go
south to Porta, though it is a city of gangs and pirates so
will be dangerous. Our great King maintains a treaty with
the Thalibans to allow travel in their land. But you must
abide by their rules. Thaliba city itself is walled and you
will not gain entry there. But when you travel west on this
road you will reach a large visitor camp. The merchants like
to call this the city though it is not. It is a rest stop
that the Golden Guard allow. You can find last minute possible
supplies there though more expensive and limited on resources.
This camp you are allowed full access but outside the wooden
fence the Golden Guard will kill you. This will be the last
time you can spread out and mingle. After that going from
here to there and from there north the road is your life.
Literally. The local tribes north of the camp do not like
outsiders at all.
These tribes are the Batani, the Woumai, the Ursmai, the
Tilini and the Bumai. You may look at the map inside but the
map on the tribes are hundreds of years outdated. No one really
knows their true location. The Tilini allow strangers to travel
on their road openly. But if you stray even a half foot off you
are subject to attack.
This means your horses can NOT graze off the road. If they
will then you will be attacked." He notices Kell start to
speak and shrugs. "Yes. You will need to relieve yourself
on the road. You will camp on the road. This means you can
not collect firewood. We recommend buying or renting a wagon
from the camp for wood or such.
The tribes use bows so they can take you out from a distance.
The Golden Guard themselves use heavy crossbows so heed their
warnings. It is rare I hear maybe once a month a merchant MAY
be encountered by a tribe barbarian and seek food and drink.
But this is rare."
The lead guard looks at the party. Then straighten's his gray
and blue uniform. "Now under the great King Maros edict you
must declare you acknowledge these statements and rules. This
includes your young girl. If you can't as it in Marentian
we have several men here who can translate some local languages.
If you fail to do this you will not be allowed to leave this
province." He shifts his sheath holding his sword not in a
threatening manner but as show of force.
"Now there is also a fee we must charge. This is to keep upkeep
on this post and the roads you travel on." He does some mental
counting. "You have 10 riders and 14 horses. It is 3 Copper
person and 4 copper per horse. That is 86 total copper due up
front. Who will pay?"
Kell starts to move forward and tries to haggle the price down
but the man shakes his head. "Sorry no discounts. The Road
Tax set by the minister puts more on horses due to the large
caravans. Horses ruin the roads than people do. The waste
and the tracks. It is costly to upkeep our roads. But to be
honest this is low. Since winter is coming we are allowed to
charge less."

Next Update.....Friday...
GM: A good place to stop. I was going to move the group
to the camp but ran out of time. So next update I
will move party to Thaliba Camp. That will end this leg
of the trip. I will then calculate and setup the 3rd
leg from there to Zara city. Will figure out encounters
and such. Since there are no encounters until the Camp
I will figure out mana to that point. Now I assume all
will Ack the guard's request. If not you MUST say so
as it will mean you are forced to stay. Will the leader
pay the 9 (almost) silver or will each person pay their share?
If leader Z'leyra will have to say so fast so not to cause
folks to post that.
I have updated the mana chart for experience. But I have
no updated it for Mana. I still got to work on that. I
will assume no more spells (aside form sleep spells) until
the camp. It is 20 miles to the Camp. If you leave around
2:30 that only gives you 4 or so hours. That's only about
10 miles. So Z'leyra should you camp here in the forest and
spread out one last time or camp on the road 10 miles from
the Camp? You could then arrive at the camp by 4 hours
after that. Which means to be honest why stay the night
there? You could stay the night and leave or just get
supplies and head out? You do about 2.5 miles per hour if
I recall. So if:
Leave 2:30 Travel to Camp - Stop 10 miles from Camp
Leave road Camp travel to Thaliba Camp - Arrive 10ish
Sleep on Marentian side of border and leave in morning.
Would arrive at Camp by 2 or 3pm. That gives you a few
hours to stock up and maybe sleep in a wide field (spread
out) then leave after that? As leader let me know.
I will update mana chart for magical Mana soon. Check out
report for EL changes. Congrats! I also need to update
the timeline file and that includes the mini IBT skills
and spells up to the point of the Camp. Stay tuned.
I assume Pyandalgor and Zabyra allow the healing. If
in the future you wish not let me know.
Schedule -
Thursday noon EST start next update - post that night.
Start rough version on Saturday.
Finish Monday update starting Noon EST Monday.
Thursday being thanksgiving I'm unsure if I will
do a update or not. I suspect folks will be busy.
It depends on if I have time and situation at the
time. If not I will start that Saturday and
finish it on the 30th (Monday) I believe.
