[New Stuff]
[Decalis 25th, 1634TH]
[Cholan's Tavern]
[Time: 7:54 am]
Kell says that he will sell his horse in order to get
a better one for his riding.
Kiet looks over to his friend and nods his approval. Since
he is capable, he offers to help. "I think I could help with
that. Sometimes it's difficult to find them here. Interested?
It'd be fun."
While Ben'dar's ranch sells horses it mostly trains them.
His ranch is the best friendly source of horse flesh that
would be dealt with fairly. Everyone else will have basic
merchant attitudes to handle.
Kell asks about buying horses from the Zen'da tribes.
But those who have been there speak that the tribes are
very territorial and pride themselves with their horses.
To them it is their wealth so it would be difficult to
impossible to buy horses from the Zen'da.
"I didn't mean, 'buy', but borrow. Many of the older members
of this group have ties with the clan and Cetric holds much
influence with them. It may be possible to have a group of
horses along with a few warriors join us for the journey. At
the foothills the warriors can turn around and return with the
horses to their village. And if they say, no, then no harm and
we plan from there." Arawn adds to the group discussion.
Kiet just says, "I have a warhorse (that I doubt I could
replace up north) and I have her for a reason. I intend to
take her along. As for wagons, I don't mind one, but for what
purpose? Food? Booty? I'd like to hear more about that and
why."
Kiet's just a bit annoyed that these people are so cavalier,
no pun intended, with their horses. Some of these people can
even talk to the horses like friends and then just leave them
behind! Shameful. He makes a decision about something.
"I don't know if you people have noticed, but I don't even
bring travel rations, nor do I bring horse fodder. Yet I eat
my fill on the trail. My horse is well fed." He sighs a bit,
as he's uncomfortable with this divulgence, but his frustration
overcomes this unveiling. "Perhaps you might consider other
alternatives...?"
Arawn looks to Kiet. "What alternatives?"
"Also, if we go to the location suggested for teleport, it
puts us on the wrong side of the river...and it might be
difficult to find a ford crossing without local help. And how
do you plan to get a wagon across the river?" Kiet thinks about
the issues they had with his parents wagon back in Lemasa.
"Fording isn't an issue other than possibly with a wagon.
Carts or sleds are much more easily brought over, especially
if the river is frozen over."
Lucria sits back and stares and speaks before someone else
does. "I've had a bounty friend enter the plains, never to
return. Those tribes are just as mean as most barbarians.
How do we expect to travel double the plains without being
bothered?"
Unali explains that they do have natives like Caladan in
Maren and Chion who seems to be back in town in Sivas that
go and come. While Chion is not a native he is now more
or less considered a Shaman under Cetric's eyes. These
two people have sway on the plains. Plus people who have
been there have been given tribal passes to be recognized
as friendly.
The chief constable nods, "if we each take a horse then
we'll need probably 600-800 pounds of food just for the horses.
I've seen large caravans like this fail. So you people will
have to plan well."
Kell listens to Kiet, nodding some. "A wagon is more of a
liability than a boon traveling cross country. We can use a
riding horse to carry food and hunt and trade along the way."
"I'm going to get a good warhorse also, that is why I'm
selling my current horse. It is time to use a trained combat
mount. I'll want to bring mine too."
"I only mention it because Kiet brought it up earlier. But
I'm fine traveling without one." Arawn adds his view on the
wagon issue.
Arawn shrugged his brow.
"Whatever the group decides on. Personally I'd rather travel
by foot or wait until spring. My concern with taking the horses
has to do with traversing hills and mountains that might be
filled with deep snow and treacherous ice, especially if a safe
pass isn't located. I'd rather not see one of our horses slip
and injure itself in the mountains or suffer if their winter
coats haven't grown yet as we've been dealing with warmer
weather down here. Plus food and water might be a challenge if
the winter is harsh there unless Kiet's idea can alleviate
that."
Arawn looks to Z'leyra and the rest of the party.
"Before we start the next leg of our quest, I can bring
someone with me to speak with Cetric and, horses or no, it
might be good to get some local news before heading out there
so we can be better prepared." Arawn adds more thoughts.
The chief shrugs again, "she," he points to Unali. "Just
said it would be friendly travel for most of the way. I
suspect a warhorse won't be needed. Once we leave the plains
we are in forest and hills. Not sure if such will be needed
then but I suspect if an enemy gets that close with those
tribal gifts of theirs then we are in trouble."
Z'leyra says, "No more than one horse per person. I will try
to make enough waybread for all of us. Another thing I can try
to do is make a few sacks that contain more than they seem. As
far as keeping the horses fed I would be happy to hear from Kiet
about alternatives?"
"We shouldn't have any trouble crossing the river as several
of us can teleport that distance without trouble."
"Normally I'd stick to more natural sources but I can see the
merit to those spells, especially under the current conditions.
Though I'd prefer to avoid Water From Stone unless pressed as it
permanently deforms the land. But I'd still like to carry
some provisions for both the horses and ourselves, just in
case. I'll consider the offer of a token but as I'll be
training Kell I'll have to think over what I can offer in
return should I accept."
"And, as a mid-winter storm could prove miserable, I'm going
to see to finding a pavilion for the horses and ourselves. Kiet,
if you need help gathering any gear for the horses, let me
know."
Kiet smiles now that someone has asked about the good
alternatives.
"Well, for instance, I've created tokens to magically create
food, fodder, and water. I use my Sustenance spell and Water
from Stone spells. I learned them in my apprenticeship because
I knew I would be traveling far and wide. It just seemed
prudent. And my Master expressed his approval with my
decision."
"It takes quite a bit of my available mana in a day to create
them, almost a week to recover, and I don't have to create the
tokens... but it's still possible. The nice part is that since
they are wards, not ensorcellments, it costs the user nothing
to use the items. The tokens can even be Coins of the Realm...
which I have already done... one of the benefits of using a
Ward."
"But if I create something like this, I will need something
in return..."
"Any takers...? And, if so, what might we trade? I'm
always interested in Enhancement magicks...or maybe someone to
teach me the Eye Powers spells...or maybe you have something
else to offer?"
"Keep in mind, I can't do it for everyone all at once...but
remember that I also have many other things for which I wish
to use that mana...personal projects, you know?"
"Hmmm...speaking of Eye Powers...it is my opinion that anybody
on guard duty be provided with the ability to see at night as
an elf. We've had issues with this on our way out last time.
I'm sure somebody here knows the spell family. Maybe a couple
of items could be created to make this happen? Or it could be
something traded for food tokens."
The chief constable sits back after he finishes his breakfast
of eggs and ham. "How much food? Enough for 10 horses over
a period of at least two weeks? I would be interested but
only mildly. I've done long distance travels around Ticasi
and chased fugitives. I'm used to living on rations. A simple
bag of a month's ration is good for me if no time. I could
not offer anything in return though I'm sorry."
"I could." Lucria leans in his chair putting his mug
of tea down. "I can offer training in the whip."
"Another option could be the silo near Salaqara but I
believe we'd have to cross the mountains or else take the long
way around them. As such I'm still leaning towards the Zen'da
plains." Arawn listens to the alternatives on food and adds
his travel option.
"I think we should speak with Chion and Caladan today. If
he's willing, Chion's mastery of teleportational magic would
be a great boon towards starting our journey... and help me out
quite a bit. And if the decision is to head to the plains, I'd
suggest that Z'leyra, Caladan, at least one of the constables
and either myself or Chion visit with Cetric tomorrow, or as
soon as possible."
Arawn looks to Cholan talking to a couple nearby and recalls
him saying Farseeker was here but missed the party and was
too lade for Unali's party. But now the military man is
now back at his fort.
After hearing of Farseeker's present Arawn looked to Unali.
"I plan on heading to Maren to visit Ben'dar's ranch. Unali,
if you'd like, you're welcome to join me. Same for anyone else
that's interested. I likely won't be more than a day there but
I can always return to pick up anyone who wishes to stay a bit."
Cholan wife, Kes comes downstairs with a baby and smiles at
the party. Some who have seen both before are surprised
how big their son has gotten. She approaches and shows him
off. "Already almost 6 months old. I suspect he'll be
as big and smelly as Cholan!"
Across from the room Cholan yells, "I heard that!"

Next Update....Friday..
GM: A short update with out much new stuff. Still things
to wait and iron out logistics wise. But looks like
Z has ordered 1 horse per person so no pack animals.
I know the spell casters IBT wise will have to be delayed
until those logistics are figured out and finalized.
I personally don't care as I can slack and do small
mini-updates :). I am off Thursday so will work on
next update assuming enough material that afternoon.
GM: Arawn - I know you will need to maybe save up mana
for any TPs but if you do speak to Chion he might
be able to help out. But I figure you will need
to wait till logistics are final before can do
your IBT.
Fremea - Being flyer I assume you can fly or just ride
on a spare horse. Course if no other horses allowed
then will need to get a horse or fly unless a wagon
is taken which is again the logistics we need to
figure out. :)
Kell - Is that IBT final or do you think you'll be
making changes? If its final I'll process it.
Pyan - Will have time to slack around so if want to do
stuff for a mini 2 week IBT let me know. You may
recall the IBT details? If not there is a link on
my site or just ask.

GM: If I were leader this is what I'd do. Party food is not
a issue at all. Horses are the issue. Foot is fine
but would take half the time. I'd get Caladan or Chion
to head to Ascihi which is on left side of river. Get
a wagon and/or any horses. If folks want their own horses
then send them there before hand. But I'd buy all new
set of horses RH1 or RH2 which is best for the plains
as they are suited for it. At 9 horses that's 36 gold.
Harness at least 4 of those horses to the large wagon. Maybe
buy 4 just for the wagon? (16 more gold) It is 19 hexes
up the river bank to be level with Cetric's tribe a half
dozen hexes to the east. At 27 miles per day with the
horses it would take 2 weeks (14.5 or so) to get to
the spot and wait for aprty to join them. Arawn or Chion
can then teleport folks in one leap to the village. Party
stays at village a bit then walks west or teleport to
the river. Then move on with Caladan or Chion leaving
at that point. Could do it also by barge and it might
take 10-14 days and be there at roughly same time. But
would have to get horses/wagon asap. Unless plan to
stay a day or two at Cetric's. So 4 horses can carry
1,000 pounds. That is 150 for wagon and say 250 for
a driver. Leaving 600 pounds for gear or food. Since
each horse needs 3 food per day and it will take 2
weeks (at least) to ride to the edge of plains then
that is 9x3x14=378 fp. So actually could get a smaller
wagon. Else if you use animals with no wagon then
you'll need to have them carry your stuff AND food.
So let's say 450 fp / 9 = 50 fp. That's at least 5
bags of grain at 10 pounds each so each horse would have
to carry at least 50 pounds of food for the horses. Of
course this does not count for return trip. Though a
teleport could be done to teleport bags of good. Just
some basic math to consider. But yeah party food is
no big deal as even with rations there is hunting and
such. This travel time though I WILL count water as
well as food. Tribes might be able to refill water
skins and such but plains are so huge it might be
days between seeing a village.
I will keep the distances below for reference if needed.
GM: Distances:
Sivas to Village by Land:
Path Hexes Distance
Sivas to Maren [Road] 12 240 miles
Maren to Cholchara [Road] 9 180 miles
Road to Marentia Fort 3.5 70 miles
Option-to Ba'ru City 3 60 miles
Fort to Village [Plain] 21 420 miles
Option: Ba'ru to Village 23 460 miles
Total: 910-950Miles depending on Ba'ru visit
Sivas to Village by water
River to Village 31 620 miles
River to Village 5 100 miles
Total: 720 Miles
Village to Kameran border (roughly)
Zen'da Plains to Border 43 860 miles
These are rough estimates and I may be off a few
hexes. These are various options.
So let's say ship wagon/horses by barge up river.
So let's assume a simple barge doing 10-20 miles
per day. Might even do more with good winds. Let's
assume 15 on average. That's 40 days. Ok. So shipping
ahead of time may not be a good option. :)
How about going to Ba'ru and getting supplies there?
Wagons? Horses? That is the closest large city to
the village. If prepare is done at start of IBT and
say a person ships those items (wagon/horses from Ba'ru)
to village then would need only cross 460 miles.
At 25 per day would be 19 days. Almost in the IBT
time period.
As GM I'm only trying to cover options. You guys have
to do some serious logistics to decide. Mainly the
horses and/or wagon/food. To fit within the 2 weeks.
Above there are some option as well. Chion if in town
could be swayed to help as he could probably teleport
2-3 wagons in one jump.
