[Recap]
From Kiet: [Re: Actions]
Kiet is fine with wandering around with the group for the first
day. None of the shopping items especially interest him though
he does inquire as to the cost of the pigeon stones. They
should be inexpensive, as pigeons are in every city...
Kiet is interested in the jewel school. It's a shame they
can't teach it in a language he can read. Perhaps someday...
GM: Ack. There are 15 stones and 6 silver each. But 5 and
merchant will mark them down to 4 each so 30 silver for
a value of 20 silver for batch of 5. As to school this
is a place of learning from many nations. Language is a
small barrier. Though it is time involved. Typically to
learn Jeweler here takes 6 months. Maybe a semester or
two for more advanced stuff. One could learn it in a fast
class of a month but they spread it out for ease of learning.

[New Stuff]
[Hills near Ticasi]
[Decalis 23rd, 1634TH]
[Full Moon Inn]
[Time: 6:12 am]
Z'leyra speaks of the Sidh Woods or rather where some
have been known to be.
Arawn made sure to note the location of the wood mentioned
by Z'leyra along with any other necessary information such as
any rules that governed the space. If he could find the time
he hoped to pay the place a visit, partially to connect and
relax but also to get the Sidh perspective on the town and,
if he was lucky, some useful information that could help the
shamanes with her case.
"Fremea, Kell, if we can find the time, tonight or after
the upcoming lunch, want to join me in paying the place a
visit?"
Kell shrugs, "leave a nice warm building for some cold
and wet woods to find Sidh who may not be there? No
thanks. I don't see need to visit every Sidh enclave
wherever we visit. Plus this time of year it is
probably empty. I suspect the Wild Forest is far more
hospitable this time of year to Sidh than some light
wood that is just a few trees not even enough to be
called a forest."
[Oyster Bar]
[Time: 7:42 am]
Z'leyra surveys the bar and the reserved room. From what
she has seen in the past there are dozens of such places
in the city. Many classes meet for study or for actual
class work while on field trips. This is very typical of
such a place. In the end the libraries are the most quiet
and secluded for meetings. But for a brunch or such places
like this serves its purpose.
Arawn scans the place, "Not very private," Arawn said, eyeing
the partition. "Considering the nature of your business here I'd
suggest keeping at least two people on watch just on the other
side to discourage eavesdroppers."
[Ticasi Council Admin Building]
[Time: 9:05 am]
Upstairs hoping to see the deputy.
He gave the other clerk a charming smile when she
offered the services of the deputy after Hayna's brush-off.
After their return, while Hayna moved to gather the
ribbons for Z'leyra, he sidled over to the woman.
"Thank you, again. I just wanted to compliment you for
your courtesy and professional manner. Your much better than
the other woman," he said, subtly indicating Hayna. "She doesn't
seem to enjoy the work, so why is she still here?"
The woman asks who the man is in reference so and Arawn
explains Hayna downstairs in the main waiting room foyer.
"Hayna? After she got her degree she tried to work for
the military school. But her...nerves got the best of
her and she ...messed up on some spells. A small fire
here....two horses dead....she was let go and came here
to work. Some cope but nerves get the best of folks
on the field. Same with Healers. They do well in
the classroom but in battle fall apart. If it weren't
for her folks she'd probably be working in the market
selling healing herbs or such. But.." The woman seems
to realize what she has said. She sits back and stares
at the Arawn. Why did she just gossip to a stranger?
he seems so inviting for some reason. She sits forward
and shuffles some parchment. "I'm sorry ...she is
a fine girl but tends to not think before talking.
But if you excuse me I need to file some things." She
rushes off to another room slightly embarrassed for
gossiping.
After the group spends time with the deputy the group]
heads back to the office foyer. The woman is back from
her filing.
Arawn asks if the place has a comment box. The woman
seems confused. Then shrugs, "if you have a complaint
or suggestion just see one of the department leaders.
They can take that info."
The group heads downstairs and leaves while waving
at Hayna. Hayna just looks busy and tells a few others
to head upstairs to their meetings.
"A thoroughly pleasant woman. You must have made quite
the impression before you left," Arawn dryly commented once
they were alone. " She loves to talk about you, you know,
enough so the gate guard recognized you when we entered the
city. I'm just curious, do you know if she has any connection
to the Metal Clan?"
Z'leyra glances at Arawn as they leave the admin building
to head to the first school. She then realizes he must mean
Hayna not the secretary upstairs. Z'leyra was your typical
brat in younger school which they call high school in some
places. The typical popular girl who talked and demeaned
others to make herself look better. But Z'leyra does not
recall any connections or frankly doesn't care to recall
if she did or not.
[Magic Deputy's Office]
[Time: 9:32 am]
The deputy speaks to Z'leyra at length.
"Shiben must have a close connection to this city. It's the
second time they've popped up in conversation since arriving
here," Arawn said after the deputy mentioned the Councilman and
Ambassador's meeting, hoping to prompt a discussion on Shiben's
involvement in local politics.
The deputy looks to Arawn and seems to study his features
a bit. "Shiben is a city that does a lot of mining. Naturally
we deal with them. Being the closest aside from ships that
come to the city. Course this is not my department. But
I know we deal with them as well as other nations around
the sea of tears for the typical ore trade."
[Metal Crafting School]
[Time: 12:22 pm]
Z'leyra and others head to the Metal School when Arawn
notices a man suddenly turn around from walking toward
them. Course he has no clue who the man is but he is
intrigued.
"Excuse me. I'll meet you inside in a bit," Arawn said,
spying Gar's sudden turn around. He then strolled off in the
same direction as the man, blending into the crowd with uncanny
ease.
[Metal Crafting School]
[Time: 12:51 pm]
Exiting the school the Alfar stares in wonder at the
places all around him. To the Alfar it is like a special
site for him like a park. So much knowledge and power
in one place. If this one city goes away the lands
around here would be in a dark age indeed.
"I'm fascinated by such a center of knowledge. I could sit
in silent observation or engage in deep conversation in a place
like this for quite some time. I recognize that other matters
press upon us but once all is done I would love to be able to
return for a tour, an exchange of information, or even possible
enrollment or to discuss a working relationship."
Kell shrugs in sadness, "this place is too....regimental.
It is clear the schools are independent and compete with
each other. It is clear that while there are no class
in this society there is a class of sorts of who is
learned in what area. A sanitation student would be
the lowest and yet the magic or law students considered
the highest class. Money may be equal here with few peasants
but let's face it class is still here. Just look at folks
while we pass. Upper classmen in magical robes or healer's
tunics walk with purpose while say a Navigator student
dressed in loose sailing tunics step aside. This place
gives me the creep. I rather be like in a place like
the great market in Cerul than this place. At least there
we know folks will cheat others and smile to your face. But
here ...."
Outside leaving the metal crafting school the party
heads to the next school.
"The Metal Clan seem to have an inordinate amount of power
here. They control the flow of ore through Shiben, something
the Engineering school along with at least a few others must
appreciate, and hold some sway over the legal system here. At
least enough to make sure that one of their own didn't suffer
punishment for animal abuses that led to two horses having to
be put down.
Tread carefully, Z'leyra. I think delving into your father's
death could uncover more than many might expect. And there are
those who will stop at nothing to keep those things secret."
He sighed.
"I have a feeling that politics are going to play a part in
all of this, possibly not just locally. I suggest not only
currying favor with the magistrates but work to weaken the
standing of any suspects you might discover during our stay.
Though it's too early to lay the blame on anyone's doorstep the
Metal Clan seem to be a good place to start, if any clues fail
to point us in another direction, along with any magistrates
that might benefit from them."
[Old Lady Poorda's place - Neighbor to Tiren]
[Time: 2:30 pm]
While the two caught up Arawn made himself useful by offering
his services to the old woman, assisting with food and clean-up
and such. When he heard that Z'leyra was unaccountable the day
of her father's death he sat back down.
"Apple pie, I'd love some. Thank you."
While Poorda distributed the pie he asked Z'leyra, "What were
you doing in the lab that night?"
Z'leyra looks to Arawn but shows that she'll talk about that
later.
Poorda sips her tea, "it will be a shame to see Tiren's place
taken down. That is what...a week or so? I've lost track
of time since I've retired. It seems some developer guy wants
to buy this whole neighborhood. Rumors are for a new school
for one of the older buildings but I hear its for some market
place with hotel and taverns. Anything to make coin. But
I refuse to sell." She smiles showing some missing teeth. "They
try to buy this place for 3 times its value. I won't sell.
They can't make me leave. My Hans and I lived here for over
40 years. No way will I leave."
Kell asks about Tiren's death.
Poorda sighs, "a tragedy indeed. It was what..2...or was it
three years now? Just seemed like yesterday. I was in the
garden at the time. All of a sudden I saw smoke. Now smoke
from his place isn't that rare. He.." She looks to Z'leyra
and back to Kell. "Well they had that workshop with that large
fire thing. I didn't think anything of it. I went inside to
do something....and came back out to notice some guy stomping
on my plants. I yelled and he rushed off."
Kell glances to Z'leyra then back. "A man?"
Poorda shrugs, "I explained this to the two nice cute
Constables that day. Folks always use my yard to cross to
the street over behind us. Saves them time. Usually to
get to that gambling hall on that street. Boys and older
guys all the time. The cute guys just told me they could
not patrol here daily. To think I worked 35 years in
this city and paid taxes! They can't find folks who
kill my prize plants!"
Kell asks, "what did he look like?"
Poorda places the tea cup down besides a nice orange and
red vase. "I don't know. He wore this old floppy hat.
Big..I don't know..6 foot? My eyes aren't as good as they
were once. I'm sure its just another drunk going to the
hall. They take our street and should take that place.
Filth vile den of evil..." She stands and starts to
clean up the cups.
[Time: 3:12 pm]
The group leaves Poorda's house hoping to find any of Tiren's
family before nightfall.
Kell looks back at her house, "a cranky lady but feisty.
Reminds me of an aunt of mine. I got the impression though
though that she wasn't as much as she wanted. I noticed out
the window it looked like a brand new gazebo. It just didn't
seem to fit in with that place. If she is fighting to save
her place from the folks who want this street she seems really
calm."
[Western Ticasi District]
[Time: 3:48 pm]
Z'leyra knows her father, Tiren, had family in Ticasi. She
has heard him talk about family in Donara and Aratad but never
gone in into great details. He never had desire to go visit
any of them especially after he got enthralled by the Kameri
weapons and their secrets.
As Z'leyra walks the street she recalls even one comment from
a cousin who saw her as a barbarian who wanted to play city
folk. The cousin who she never personally cared for had
said that those secrets would be the death of him. Ironically
it may have just been that.
But there were some family that did treat her nicely. At least
tried to. Z'leyra didn't blame them much. A very civilized place
like this coming home with a woods person. From some distant
tribe who could not read much less do simple math. Like Hayna
the others saw her as such from students to teachers.
As she walks the streets listening to Kell and Kiet argue over
the merits of spear weapons versus blades she hopes she has made
the right decision to return here. Sure she needs to know what
happened. But what if it backfires. Tiren was for the most
part respected. Sure he had 'that' child. But in many kingdoms
bastards are common with kings so those things happen. So they
figured Tiren just got his joys out and come back with her like
a King on a hunt finding a maiden in the forest.
The first place is her cousin, Lukra Harradra, she was older in
her lower 30s and last she saw just had a 3rd kid. She arrives
at the small home and knocks. A boy around 10 or so answers the
door and seems to recognize her vaguely. He says his mom is away
at work but will relay the message. Z'leyra leaves a short letter
for her cousin with some details with the boy.
[Western Ticasi District]
[Time: 4:12 pm]
Now Z'leyra reaches the home of her other cousin, Blager
Armwrestle who is in his late 30s. His wife says he will be
home soon and everyone can come in and relax. Blager is now
a talented engineer and his home is upscale compared to others
as he is well paid. Chit-chat is done for some time and Z'leyra
and Blager's wife - Ariel, catch up on the last 3 years.
Blager more or less tolerated Z'leyra. May not want to go out
on a limb for her but tolerated her rather than hated her. Blager
could be talked to and reasoned when she was down. At times he
even was kind to her. During a bad week in Jewel school at the hand
of verbal abuse he spent hours talking to her to try to lift her
spirits up.
[Time: 4:41 pm]
Blager finally arrives home dressed in a nice green tunic
and tan work pants. Z'leyra notices a nice beard grown since last
she saw him. Introductions are made and all sit in the parlor
to talk.
"So you have returned. I actually figured once gone you would
never come back. I wouldn't have blamed you. You seem to have
done well as your friends here seem to support you. Is that
your eagle outside? What happened to FisherKing?"
Z'leyra quickly explains about her last friend who died in Clima.
But he doesn't need to know where and why. Just that he died.
"Coming back to prove his death? Some in the family think
you actually had some hand in it. Lukra has even said that
maybe you set it up. I personally see it as an accident.
I will see if I can attend tomorrow. I need to visit one
bridge to test it for damage but I should be able to do it."
Kell asks the man, "excuse me. Do you know who is trying
to buy Tiren's neighborhood?"
Blager nods, "Ki Landsman. Actually our Engineering school
is over 250 years old and we need to expand. We have put
in bids for 3 locations. Ki is trying to develop various
sections of town. I hear he wants to do a resort complex
there for scholar torists. But he says he will likely
make a new school or at least some homes and a market place
if not given enough bids. I believe the Jewel Craft, Sanitation
and Metal Crafters all have put in bids for his new areas.
Personally the Religion building is the oldest in the city
with it being 450 years old. But they seem set in their ways
and doubt they will ever get a new complex."
Z'leyra realizes it is getting late and wants to see her
uncle before nightfall. Blager bids her farewell.
[Time: 4:53 pm]
As the group heads north to Z'leyra's uncle's place. Kell
shakes his head. "This gets more bogged down by the hour.
All this politics? You'd think the politics school would have
the biggest power. With all this dealing and such you'd
wonder if any schooling is done."
[Hammerhand's House]
[Time: 5:03 pm]
Z'leyra explains her uncle, Arman hammerhand is old school
Navigator. He actually dropped out of Navigator school when
it was too boring but now owns 3 merchant ships that travel
the Sea of Tears.
He is often away on one of those ships but today due to the
season he is home doing his work running things by paper
shuffling. The house is fairly large with 5 bedrooms so he
is quite well to do. The man barrel chested in his upper
50s has a thin mustache turning gray. The first thing is
his piercing green eyes.
The man grabs Z'leyra and does a bear hug and twirl.
"Nasha! You have returned. Come! Come in and your friends
as well."
Kell looks to the Healer for questions.
Arman explains, "This one here? She loved the animals
around town. I had a dog named Nasha and she would get
on all fours and act like the dog. They'd bark and chase
rabbits." He grins and leans toward Kell and lowers his
voice. "I think she was a bit wazoo if you ask me."
Arman sits back and listens to why Z'leyra is here.
"I will see if I can come. I have one ship in the morning
from Gom that I may need to inspect. But I should be able
to make it." He become s a bit serious. "This is awful
business. If you investigate which majority of folks think
as an accident ...it might draw attention. No offense
Nasha but your status may have changed elsewhere but to
many here you are just a ...uneducated wench. If this
backfires on you then even Tiren's reputation will be badly
ruined."
Arman and Z'leyra chat for some time then the group leaves
as it is getting dark now.
[Time: 5:58 pm]
The group heads back to the tavern for dinner. Z'leyra
considers the day's events and what everyone has seen and
said. Tomorrow either way will be a day of judgement for
many reasons.
