[Recap]
From Kiet: [Re: Actions]
Assuming Kiet gets time in the evening to attend to Z'leyra,
he'll try to arrange to bring a bottle of wine and goblet or
two. May as well be comfortable while we are at it.
Kiet tells her "I saw a man go into a shop with a case that...

GM: Ack. I know its kind of hard these days to figure out what

'early' stuff. But oh well.

that. ]

She will try to make sure Corona is fed and explain as...
Having much of her equipment back Z'leyra will proceed to her
uncle's house and ask if he wants to accompany him while she
casts her Akasha spells to try to locate the killer(s). She
trusts Arawn and Kell to deliver the gold. Any party members
that wish to accompany her are welcome to do so.
Z'leyra plans on a number of Akasha spells. [She will first
cast an EL0 Balance Purification (with luck ring and thru
Wand) then cast the Akasha using her Luck Ring and thru her
wand (powered where possible by her batteries).] A couple of
Akasha spells at Poorda's. One low EL to show the recent
killing and taking of the vase. A max EL to see the person
she had talked about at the time of Tiren's death.
After these she will attempt to follow place to place her
father's assassin after the murder. One Akasha per place till
she finds the change in identities, runs out of casting ability,
or loses track, in which case she would try tracking in the
other direction...to see where the assassin came from.
GM: Ack. Cast at Poorda's place while Gorsh has admitted to
the killing? Plus no one asked the exact time of this
mystery man in hat she saw. It can be assumed that Gorsh
who had a hat might be the man. But regardless if you
see him then what? Do you follow? Theres limited amount
of spells one can cast to find one or the other killer.
As to Tiren's Green gal if she got on a horse and went
down the street there are three directions. North, South,
East. You might find where she went if she went that way
but how far do you follow then? I'll assume based on
comments above until tapped out. So need to assign how
many possible spells to which killer. Gorsh or Green gal.
Since you might only have 15-16 castings before tapped out
for the day.

[New Stuff]
[Ticasi]
[Decalis 24th, 1634TH]
[Time: 3:26 pm]
Z'leyra explains about her twin system and hears the
Dean ask more questions.
Ha'Kell thinks about this, it is the most direct and straight
forward explanation. An identical twin would explain all of
the unknowns, except motive. What is the motive?
When asked where her sister is Z'leyra answers, "I have no
reason to believe that she ever left the Kameran, roughly a
thousand miles north east of here."
The Dean starts to speak but then closes his mouth in thought.
[Time: 6:32 pm]
As the court adjourns, Martin is escorted to the door to
be questioned and see why his son is arrested.
Kell looks directly at Mr Smith, the scumbag, and gives him a
huge smile, showing off his white teeth and handsome face, and
shoving it right into that jerk's brain. He will revel in this
time and do what is possible to bring Mr Smith down.
Arawn frowns though at Kell for his mood. One does not need
to be an empath to see what Kell is thinking. Arawn considers
some straight talk on good will and all that is in order
in the future.
[Time: 7:28 pm]
Finally Z'leyra is processed and allowed her visitors. All
but Kell and Kiet are here at this point. But should be
here soon. For those who remain they stay in the tiny
suite.
The second floor garrison suites are actually just a bigger
two room area. The back is the bedroom with latrine style
facilities. The outer room is a couch, table and 4-5 chairs
depending on how many are in it. The inside room is maybe 10
feet by 10 but the outer room is 15 by 15 and it is still
a bit cramped.
Arawn was keen to learn what the others had discovered and to
share his own findings as well. After listening to whatever the
others had to tell he updated them in regards to his little
excursion.
"I followed Martin to his home and watched as he tended to
something in an upper room. It might prove to be nothing of
significance but, considering he seemed in a hurry to meet
with Milo afterwards, prior to court, I would take a guess it
has something to do with this whole mess.
Afterwards, I overheard Milo inform his brother he would tell
the truth, that he had a 'difference of opinion' with Tiren, to
which Martin advised him to 'not add to it... especially on the
other stuff'.
It might be worth investigating just what Martin was up to
in that room if we're to find out the truth to things here."
After discussing this he turned to Z'leyra, recalling the
shift in her energies after her private court meeting.
"What happened in there?"
[Time: 7:40 pm]
Unali listens to the others then when there is time in
between she explains what she found for Z'leyra to hear.
Though some of it was found out in court Unali tries
as softly as she can to tell her the details so not to
distress Z'leyra.
Arawn listens about Hayna and is impressed at the change
in personality. Maybe the woman was not understood as well
as before.
[Time: 8:15 pm]
Kiet exits the courthouse while most of the building has shut
down. For over an hour he was asked questions and the chief
investigator to Poorda's death listened. A scribe would make
it a legal testimony as well. But the investigator says
unless a trial goes on he may need to testify again. But
most cases these things get plead agreements. The investigator
assumes Garr's dad will try to reduce a public trial.
just moments ago in the 2nd lower basement level Kiet exited
the small dim interrogation room. The investigator would
occasionally exit and return shortly after Kiet assumed he
asked Gorsh questions or maybe other constables. Finally he
is given leave. Kiet exited the room and sees Martin and
his nicely dressed lawyer on a bench. Both men stop talking
and stare. Martin stares at Kiet and if had nails in his
mouth would make paper thin tacks. Kiet for his part passes
the men and bows like they did in Katai. Then moves on best
not to anger the snake too much.
Kiet may not be worldly on politics and justice systems
but he knows that was on purpose. Constables probably
use that same technique to cull the weak from the strong
who will be willful to testify or shrink away. Either way
Kiet suspects he will not be invited to the Smith family
for dinner anytime soon.
Now back outside he heads to the market. Walking along
the dark streets he not alone as many are still around in
the down town area. He is fascinated by the use of magical
city lights that glow brighter than normal candle or lantern
lights. These orbs do the work of 3 such normal lantern
lights. But as he nears the market he notices oil lights
still glowing that aren't magical. It seems traditional
ways of market places and decoration is still in order.
Markets in many places like oil lamps as it tends to sooth
customers by the flicker of the lamp. Some of the most
profitable markets use tiki torches for some reason compared
to lanterns that glow but of clouded light.
Kiet enters a wine shop and finds a Ticasi red blend. The
clerk says Ticasi does little wine making as they import most
from Donara. But these are from the north of the province
that only create a good crop every 4-5 years. This one is
34 years old but is good according to the clerk. Kiet pays
for the wine and some cheap goblets Then heads toward the
garrison. It has been a long and tiresome day.
[Time: 8:24 pm]
Kiet arrives at the garrison which is a sprawling 3 story
complex. While general prisoners are on the first floor
rear the 'guest' suites are the second floor. Folks who have
diplomatic issues but are in trouble, those accused of high
crimes but house arrest is warranted and the like are for
the suites.
A constable leads Kiet to Z'leyra's suite after checking the
wine for tampering. Kiet sits on a couch as Z'leyra sits in
a chair. This place is almost better than some Inns. Kiet
pours the wine as the constable reminds him. "You have only
about half an hour as visitors can't stay beyond 9." With
that the constable shuts and locks the door.
Kiet tells her, "I saw a man go into a shop with a case that
looked like one in Poorda's place. He sold it then met up with
Gar(r) Smith at a brothel. Councilor Smith then meets with
Smith the Younger and asks 'Is that him?', indicating the vase
seller. Then they leave. I found out later that Poorda was
dead and I just knew that the vase seller killed her...and I
suspected strongly that the Smiths put him up to it. Sure
enough, the vase was missing from Poorda's quarters. We ran
into her killer soon afterward and somebody tried to kill
him! We were lucky enough to get him out alive if not unharmed...
but that just made him more...um...pliable...yeah...during
questioning. He confessed to the murder. I informed the judge
about this. With luck, it should remove ANY possible influence
the Smiths have in your case."
"Between that and the wine, I hope it helps you."
Z'leyra asks some questions and seems in a decent mood. Kiet
explains his court interrogation.
The suite is large but can hold 4 with ease and maybe 6
at any one time. So some members have to sit outside
and wait as they talk to Z'leyra.
Kell sits besides Kiet and listens.
Kell will listen to Kiet explain things, and if given the
opportunity will add a small piece of news. "As far as I know,
Poorda never intended to sell her house. The Ki Land
Development company even offered her a very large offer which
she declined. Perhaps the Ki Land company can verify this as
I'm sure they have good records on what they purchase and offers
made. The only way Martin Smith could plan to start
construction on their new school is if they have the land,
which they did not until today with Poorda's death. That is
either a very, very large coincidence or Martin Smith had
foreknowledge of some sort."
"I don't believe that Milo Smith or the Ki Land Development
had anything to do with this. Whilst it is possible, both have
acted with honor and honesty throughout these events. Martin
Smith is the driving force, with his son Garr."
Since Kell figured Z'leyra would be given the vilest food
the city could buy he decided to bring food for him, her and
Kiet. As the time gets near to end of visitor shift they
finish the meal.
After Kiet is done the half-elf adds, "The Ki Land company
doesn't have anything to do with Poorda's murder. The only
they have is they work for Martin Smith." Taking a few last
bites of the dinner.
Z'leyra thanks Kiet and Kell for the food. Then to Arawn
"Secrets. politics. An offer I accepted. If not misled I will
be released tomorrow with two minders, I will be able to do
Akasha spells that day but must leave by the next day. I will
only be able to come back if and when I have proof of Tiren's
murderer. If the gold hasn't been delivered I should also make
sure that that is done before I must leave."
Arawn and Kell notice Z'leyra must be highly distracted as
she just told something that has to have been a big secret.
Arawn glances at the cell front at the bars and sees a guard
with back to the suite standing there. Arawn figures maybe
she should've been more concerned of being heard. But now
it is too late.
Arawn's eyes narrowed slightly alongside a hint of a smile at
Z'leyra's guarded reply. Whomever she had spoken to in private
was obviously someone of great influence, more so than any of the
Council members and which hinted at a few possible identities.
He left off prying further into the details of the clandestine
conversation as she had her reasons to avoid sharing too many
details - Secrets and Lies, all part of the game when politics
were involved.
"Unless you prefer to deal with it yourself I'll see to the
gold delivery and have Kell accompany me to help finalize the
business transaction.
In the meanwhile, I don't know what else was shared with you
during your meeting but as the Powers That Be seem to be urging
your hunt beyond Ticasi I'd suggest speaking with your uncle,
perhaps other relatives as well, before leaving unless evidence
pops up to give us reason to linger here. If the murderer was an
outsider it may have something to do with events outside this
city. Your father shared much with you but there are some
things a parent rarely tells their child. Some stories are best
shared with close council, trustworthy friends and family.
Perhaps one of those stories might guide you towards additional
clues and an answer."
Kell nods to Arawn, "Of course I can help deliver the gold."
Kell listens to Z'leyra explain and shifts a bit with nerves
at the statement. Clearly someone wants this whole thing covered
up and now 1 or more guards may have heard.
Z'leyra accepts Arawn's offer to deliver the gold. She gives
him the gold and details for the transaction. She thanks Arawn
and Kell for both the offer and the suggestions. She decides
that she will try to meet up with her uncle in the morning.
While she likely could lose the escorts she decides that unless
they prove to be a real problem it would be best to stay on
their good side.
"If we do not find the killer, then yes, going to see my
sister may be the next step."
"They really want you to leave, don't they?" the trader
intones with a funny look. Some may say predatory, some may say
as an angel, some may say never trust a smiling trader. "I
won't pry into the why, yet we need a plan after your release.
The options I see are finding the actual killer, or getting
into some, er, rather interesting scrapes so those escorts
get lost and we can do whatever."
"Z'Leyra, this is up to you. In my mind, the best option is
asking your family then going to find your sister. Or we can
hang the whole thing and never return to this city." as he looks
her in the eyes with a now gently but firm look of compassion.
Arawn hears Kell speak of yet another Smith. He hopes this
moneylender is not one to deal with the gold bar.
Arawn gave Kell and appreciative smile before rolling his eyes
and shaking his head when Sovis ties to the Smith clan were
mentioned.
"Great. That family has their hands in everything. No wonder
they've escaped punishment in the past. But it seems many on the
Council would prefer to see their stranglehold on things come to
an end. They've just been waiting for the opportunity and the
things we've presented just might give them that chance. So
maybe we can keep an ear to the ground and see if we can help
them out."
Everyone hears a noise down the hall and looks through the
cell bars. A man appears in the dark hall and waves the
guard away. "Her lawyer is here we'll need privacy." The
guard nods and leaves from earshot. The defense lawyer
steps forward and places a hand on a magical rune on the wall.
Arawn senses magic activate and a very dim field of energy
of some kind lowers behind the man as he steps into the
cell. "Its a privacy field so no magic can be used to
listen in. Sorry I'm late. I had to line up witnesses
and other things for the morning. I hope we've not spoken
of any strategy yet. Sadly we have short time left before
they get us to leave. The basic strategy is to ensure
our witness list will show you were at school during the
times of his murder. I have a couple new witnesses I'm
told from my staff that might help." Ht pulls up a chair
and sits down. "This will be a hard road. It may take
weeks or months to solve."
Z'leyra stares so even he doesn't know what she knows.
IF she had known of the privacy field she'd have used
it but this is all new to her.
[Time: 9:02 pm]
A guard appears in front of Z'leyra's suite and lowers
the privacy field. "Visitors need to leave now. You
may stay if need for 30 more minutes." He nods to the
defense lawyer.
The party stands and wishes Z'leyra a good night's rest.
Some may have heard about tomorrow but they will not
hold their breath if things don't work out. Many of the
party head to the inn for a late dinner while Unali decides
she needs to do a few things and departs from the group
and will return later.
Back upstairs the lawyer turns to Z'leyra. "Your friends
trust the system. I don't want to know what was said
earlier when we exited the room. But I must say I'm
curious." He raises a hand. "But in this work I've learned
to accept what is given. Now let's cover the details once
more and try to get a solid strategy in order.."
[Ticasi]
[Decalis 25th, 1634TH]
[Time: 5:38 am]
Z'leyra wakes up not from the noise as there have been
occasional noises from downstairs general cell block yelling
and fighting. But she wakes up for the uncertainty of
the trial and her own sister. Could it even be true? Will
she be forced to give up her sister and hunt her down to face
possible punishment here? She exits the inner room and begins
to pace back and forth after dressing.
[Time: 6:15 am]
Arawn and Kell exit the tavern after a quick breakfast of
eggs and sausage or greens and fruit for Arawn. They carry
the bag for the gold bar as they head for the moneylender
shop.
[Time: 6:22 am]
Z'leyra is given a light breakfast of bread, cheese and
and oatmeal. She only picks at the food as she continues
to wonder about the future.
Z'leyra will try to make sure Corona is fed and explain as
much of what is going on to Corona as will understand. She
does this through the window as Corona sits on a tree outside
her cell.
[Time: 7:08 am]
Finally the moneylender shop opens and Arawn and Kell enter
to perform the exchange. Documents are exchanged showing the
deal from the east. The clerk takes the two gold bars to the
side and tests them to ensure they are all gold. Once his
magic detector verifies it he nods. "Ok. Two bars is over
1,200 coins. Looks like you are due 25 gold for the two
bars according to the agreement from Carver." He goes
to another room and enters their vault and comes back out
with the gold bag. He hands the bag to Arawn. "Nice
business dealing with you. This should help us go for
the rest of the hard winter."
[Time: 7:45 am]
Z'leyra arrives at the court cuffed again and ready to
wait for the judges. She meets her defense lawyer again
and goes over any changes. "One witness got sick but his
info is not as important as he is a janitor who only saw
you briefly at the school. So it'll be fine. He's been
sick a couple days and at his place."
[Time: 7:58 am]
Just as the last party member enters the court room behind
Z'leyra the councilors and judges take their seats. The
day started out chilly from 10 degrees and won't warm up to
30 until afternoon. While the courthouse has a furnace the
heat is taking time to warm up the place.
The court is called to order and the defense lawyer calls
his next witness. The first of three teachers who quickly
testify of seeing Z'leyra in school at the time of the murder.
The prosecutor tries to trip them by ensuring they saw her
and not this woman in green. He is able to get one teacher,
Mortis Kanar, who teaches jewelry and magic mixtures, to trip
to explain that his eyesight is not as good as used to be but
he swore he saw Z'leyra levitating as he passed in the hallway.
With two good witnesses and 5 students to come forward to
also testify the court finishes this period.
Finally the defense calls Hayna forward. She takes the seat
and is sworn in. "So tell us of that day."
Hayna looks at the wall not wanting to meet Z'leyra's eyes.
"The day before was bad as I just had a stressful day at
a healing herbs test. So that morning I went to the
library to try to find a book a friend recommend so I can
study better. It had better pictures. As I left the library
I was passing the Angus Garrison and I noticed Z'leyra outside
the garrison talking to a guard."
The defense lawyer turns and glances at Z'leyra then back at
Hayna. He confirms the time. At least 45 minutes before
the murder and when others had testified that Z'leyra was
in school for almost 3 hours before.
"Yes this was it. As I passed I thought it odd as she was
asking for directions."
"Really? To where?"
"To places she already knew. Like....like Tiren's street."
The courtroom begins to murmur and the judge has to silence
folks.
"Why would this woman who has lived her for many years want
to know directions to her street?'
"You didn't this odd?"
"Yes. But I figure maybe some spell backfired and she lost
her mind briefly. I've heard of such things during one class
myself on Healing Tragedies. One woman had a spell backfire
and she lost her hearing for 3 days. "
"What was she wearing?"
Hayna explains the green clothing seen in the illusion.
"Why didn't you mention this yesterday?"
"We've had our....problems in the past." Hayna looks down
and at the floor. "I figured no one would've believed me or
trusted my word. Dean Asher knew of our problems and had dealt
with us fighting a few times. It would've been..." She looks
up and at the lawyer, "Would've been problems for both of us."
"So after you learned of Tiren's death you held this secret
for over 2 years? Why?"
"She had left and it might not have solved anything."
"Except for helping a man's reputation and others like
her family to wonder for two years on this accident."
"I'm sorry. After I saw that ...thing yesterday at his
house I realized what happened."
"Do you recall the guard's name or what he looks like?"
She shakes her head.
"So it is only your word this happened." She nods.
Prosecutor steps up, "are you certain it was her in every
way? Not a disguise or illusion?"
"No. Well..yes. That was her I'm sure. But if it was
a disguise or illusion then no I'm unsure. Though that blasted
bird of hers and that drum she always wore were missing."
Z'leyra looks down thinking of Fisherking.
Hayna is dismissed and Milo is called back to the stand.
"Were you able to obtain the documented requested?"
"We are still looking but we have found some..."
Milo hands over some documents showing the legal methods
of the mine and dealing with Tiren. But he explains he
should hopefully have the rest by this afternoon.
[Time: 9:18 am]
The judge calls a man behind the prosecutor to the
bench. All 3 councilors, judge and the man chat briefly.
Arawn is tempted to use his magic but was warned that
doing so would be not allowed and could be detected.
[Time: 9:33 am]
The judge dismisses the man and Z'leyra is told by her
lawyer he is probably a truthsayer. While not fully
allowed in most situations truth magic is used to at least
add advice to judges on what they detect.
The judge begins to sift through various documents and finally
puts them aside. The judge looks around the room, "Based on
this hearing the city has not shown enough evidence to keep
you further for trial. Several of the witnesses seem to be
give us enough doubt that this mystery woman in green was
not the defendant. However, there is some concern that the
person we need to ask is your sister a twin. Since she is
not here we are limited on our jurisdiction. I am not
authorized to keep you in this city nor the constables. But
I strongly suggest you stay until the prosecutor can be
assured the true killer will be found."
The prosecutor stands, "the city is confident that we can
put out an alert for this woman. The problem is if Z'leyra
enters they will see this woman. We are in a hard place
ourselves on how to proceed. I recommend we dispatch a bounty
hunter to find this twin and bring her to justice."
The judge nods, "so ordered. He will get as much information
from you." He looks at Z'leyra. "As he can. ' Then the
judge leans forward becoming serious. "If I find that you
have made this court and this city a fool by averting justice
I will see that you and others." He waves at hand at the
audience. "Will return to see what a court can really do.
Is this understood?"
The judge leans back into his cushioned chair and folds
his hands on the bench. "This investigation on the murder
of a councilor will not end. It will just have to change
as the investigation on other things opens. You are hereby
free to go." He holds the gavel in the air. "I hope for
you that you bring the true killer to justice or your reputation
as well as Tiren's will be diminished." He bangs the gavel
down and leads the bench to the back door.
Z'leyra had expected this but it still seems way too easy.
A murder this way with her right here they just release? She
wonders if the law is being twisted for the powers that be
or forces not even known. She stands and looks back to the
party who feign surprise. But she sees Hayna is quickly moving
to the back door.
The prosecutor had protested but seems to just sigh as yet another
lack of evidence is shown in his face. When dealing with magic
one must find magic experts who can fight back. But in this city
such things are few and far between.
The defense lawyer slaps Z'leyra's back and congratulates her.
"So what now?"
[Time: 9:41 am]
The party heads down stairs with Z'leyra with them after
singing papers on her release. As they enter the lobby of
the courthouse she sees Hammerhand and Martin Smith whispering.
On seeing the party Martin steps back and salutes Z'leyra
while smiling. He turns and leaves the courthouse.
Uncle Hammerhand sighs and moves toward Z'leyra. "It seems
Garr is now in deep trouble. The investigators say he will
do time for sure Even Martin will not be able to help him
this time. His trial will start next week. As to Martin
himself...he remains untouched."
The party stare at the man and he finally explains in
a soft whisper. "It seems he was told by a certain guard
of this outcome today. He made a deal with the investigator
that he would be not investigated if he didn't bring this
situation at hand. That could bring problems to the city.
So he may have some involvement but he will not be touched.
But his son is due a long prison stay if not other measures."
Hammerhand looks at Z'leyra in the eye as he speaks. Quietly
he conveys that he probably knew what happened in that private
meeting and even his eyes seem to convey he was behind it in
doing a favor. But he shows now sadness that this slip of
the tongue may result in Martin being loose and having a card
to play in the future.
Kell, Kiet and others stare as Martin mounts his horse as he
smiles. He may know his son is in trouble but his power as
councilor is probably still secure. While he may not be one
to be investigated at least others on the council will know
he had something to do with things from Poorda to Tiren's death.

The party exits the courthouse. The defense lawyer says
she will not be allowed to still use the staff for her spells.
That she should keep the spells as quiet as possible not to
disturb others on the streets.
The party looks to Z'leyra for the obvious now what question.
Actions? Comments?
Next Update....Friday??
GM: A good place to stop. I considered doing a bit more but
I will wait for actions. I had hoped to be done for
last Friday but posts came in Thursday last minute of
a half dozen posts and got bogged down. Wednesday I
had tried to start it but no posts had come in till
Thursday so was delayed. I had wanted to try to finish
Saturday when I saw Z'leyra's admitting to being freed.
I had to sit back and resolve this very unexpected
response. It was not planned. While it was clearly
in error we were both wrong. I had assumed it was
implied enough by the Scholar to keep it all secret. I
guess the threat was not nicely too plain. Alex had
assumed would've been in better position without being
heard but I had already posted she would be sent to
a garrison jail. Not too hard to hide. So while its
not her fault entirely I had to deal with the consequences.
As a result Martin is now a free man. Things could've gone
way bad for the party. But I figure this is best for all
in order to prevent a sudden escape from Ticasi. So now
we move on and Martin is now probably a enemy with a capital
E so folks may want to avoid the town for a bit.
Assuming Z'leyra still wants to do her spells though as
I outlined it will be near impossible to follow the woman
in green all day. Even if could do 15-16 spells it might
not give what she wants except finding the person get on
a horse and going X direction. By the 15/16th spell magic
might be drained. Since the spell only does a short
time (not a VCR like spell going back and forth at will)
or defined space (at most maybe 100 feet in open street)
it will take time to follow said horse or her walking to
find what she may be looking for. For my part even I
don't know what happened as I've not fleshed it out. It
will depend on the spells to come. I have a general outline
of what happened to the woman in green but I did not do a
complete minute by minute outline of hours after the
murder.
GM: 25 Gold from the gold bars. How will this be done?
Split equally or what or Z'leyra takes all?
Court costs - 4 Silver expenses for scribes, etc
Lawyer - 14 silver for 2 days work
Tiren Guards- 18 copper (3 guards 1 at Poorda's 2 at Tirens)
GM: My plan I hope is to work on next update Wednesday. I'm off
most of Thursday so this will help. I hope unless I get
posts that night to get it out for Friday. But we shall
see as I'm still recovering from my cold. Opps. I forgot
to add Z's last post. Added. But I think I'll do the
spells next update give some possible changes if needed.
I really wanted to do more on the trial stuff and court.
But I know it could get these updates huge and its already
800 lines. So I skimmed it down. I hope this is fine.
I think the basic highlights was enough.
