[Recap]
From Kiet: [Re: Actions]
Kiet offers to go first, as he
has climbed before. The extra weight of his gear
is troubling, but its best to have one experienced person below and one
above for safety reasons.
If he falls, he can cast an EL0
flight spell. If he has trouble clearing the
landing area, he will cast Earth Strength from his
small, black shield.
GM: Ack. So fall 350 odd feet? That's
maybe 8-9 seconds if I figure. Yeah might have time to cast stuff. :)
From Fremea: [Re: Actions]
Fremea will take a quick look at
the cave entrance to make sure there is nothing
that shows any danger to her friends, then she
will see about getting Unali there as fast as she can.
GM: Ack.
From Arawn: [Re: Actions]

[New Stuff]
[Ma 3rd, 1636TH]
[Time: 11:39 am Ma'Dor town Vahear]
"What kind of treasure is it?," Arawn
asked, hoping the man would wish to share news of
his discovery. "Is it a weapon of some sort?"
Velf smiles, you guys always seem to
ask. Let's just say it will be a item that
will bring the Empire to a global level. Right
now we control maybe a quarter of the globe. At
least in this region. But if this item exists
then nothing will stop us. Never fear if it does
exist you and your men, even the guards, will be
handsomely rewarded. That should suffice for now.
[Time: 12:25 pm South-East of Ma'Dor]
Arawn gave an affirmative nod when
Kiet volunteered to be the first down. The man
was an acrobat and likely the best choice among
those present. Unali would have been a fine
choice as well but she had yet to show herself.
The alfar wondered if he should volunteer the
information that a companion or two would be
meeting them. But, unsure if Fremea and Unali
would wish to remain hidden, he decided to keep quiet.
As he helped to secure the rope,
making a harness if Kiet desired to use it, he called out to Velf.
"Why is magic not wise here?"
Velf shrugs, you'll see once down
there. I'm not expert on magic but it could backfire around here.
Raddok stayed fairly close to Arawn during the
walk to the mine, but in his other role as
translator with the dwarves, he occasionally let
others pass him & gruffly called out to the
dwarves to keep up & be quiet in Dwarf Elder.
When they reached the white rock which was to
anchor their climb down to the mine, he discussed
with Kiet whether just to use one rope or two,
but knew his climbing rope was a bit too short
for the cliff. He agreed that Kiet could go first
& he, Raddok, would take the tail end. "That
way," he stated, "I can make sure these prisoners
are geared correctly & won't fall. We worked too
hard to get them here." He thought, flicking his
eyes quickly to Arawn & Dorhak. "I recommend we
have the dwarves go down," he said
conversationally, "separated between the guards.
"I want to keep my best rope for
possible climbing around inside the mine, so
let's use my regular rope to climb down, if
that's all right with everyone. Kiet, do you need
any spikes or ties? I'll collect what you use as
I go down, in case we need them later, inside the
mine. No point in leaving them here for any
curious eyes." He then proceeded to order Dorhak
& Barbosa to start rigging themselves for the
downward climb, not wasting any manners on the
two, although he gave a quick wink when his back was to Velf.
Velf grunts, two ropes is
fine. You'd have to have keen eyes to see them
from the water. Obviously we need to climb back
up. So ropes will be left here to return
topside. I said remove their bindings! These
2...I hope.' He smiles at the dwarves. Will be
richly rewarded if they help solve the puzzle
below. They will be heroes to our people!
Raddok continues, Is anyone else
familiar with how to use this gear?" he asked the
general group. "If not, listen to me & I'll
explain how this is going to go, and we'll keep
it as simple as possible." Raddok then explains
how the rope, hooks and jury-rigged rope slings
worked, & recommended the order of descent,
suggesting Velf be toward the lead, as he knew
the cliff. He hoped to keep slings to a minimum,
and that the cliff offered enough handholds to
guide them all. Every sling meant cutting a bit
off his rope & that meant keeping track of all the bits for later use.
Velf paces impatiently waiting,
there are spikes and a few hand holds already
from last few descents. If folks are too scared
to climb go to the west and road then wander
slowly back to town. But I prefer all go below for secrecy sakes.
Arawn seemed indifferent to the
dwarves, allowing his 'assistant' to bark
commands to them. He gave a curt nod when Raddok
suggested the dwarves be brought in at the middle
to avoid an attempted 'escape'.
"Don't worry too much about the
cutting the rope if you have to. I have a length
of fine rope, spikes and a grappling hook for the
interior if it's needed. Just see to the others and I'll cover the rear."
[Time: 12:28 pm Ma'Dor town Vahear]
Kiet helps secure the ropes to the
cement block. Dorhak studies the block being a
stone crafter and figures its 2.5-3 feet wide and
4-5 feet long. With probably 3 feet buried in
ground making it secure. Probably several
hundred pounds of stone for leverage at
least. So it could hold maybe 600-800 pounds with no risk.
Kiet forms a rope harness over his
arms and waist and then uses 2 ropes one as a
safety rope. Being an acrobat his skill is
probably better than most. Kiet then steps to the
side. Trained climbers could repel down in
seconds. But if this cliff is unstable to lose a
portion then best to take it slow. Being a
teamster he shifted his gear around him in places to give him equal balance.
Kiet exhales and drops over the
side. He breathes again seeing his ropes
hold. Slowly he descends feet by feet. Sure
enough there are small hand holds and inset ring
spikes to hold ropes to about every 10 feet.
About 40 feet down he sees
some plant growth below. All around the area
clay and brown sand is heating in the overhead
sun, there is no other growth. Finally Kiet's
left foot hits open air which seems to be the
cave top. Kiet then uses the last rope segments
to inch his way down. Kiet glances up but the
sun is right above so hard to see anything but
dark figures looking down some 50 feet up.
Kiet estimates the cave entrance is 5
feet by 4 feet wide so its not a walk in entrance
but a crawl in. Kiet breaks some recent branches
to clear his sight lines. As he does he jumps
when something taps him on shoulder.
Fremea giggles. Kiet curses. Fremea
spots the perimeter of the clan entrance but sees
no traps or magical aura. To her it looks safe.
She peers into the darkness but only sees a
normal cave wall aura. She whispers it seems
safe. Then considers heading to find Unali.
At top Velf attaches his ropes, he
yells out to Kiet, don't go far into the cave
more than 20 feet for your safety!
Velf then turns and moves to block.
Turns around and then runs off the cliff. His
body slams taunt on the ropes but he has done
this a few times - and his legs hit the cliff
wall. He then leaps off and repels another 10
feet. In 5 seconds he gets to the cave entrance
grinning. He crawls into the hole with help from Kiet.
Kiet and Velf release the ropes for
next climbers. Mournath attaches ropes and
actually has a bit more skill than Kiet having
climbed rigging for years. He descends but does
not repel. He has no difficulty and climbs into the entrance.
Velf unpacks his backpack and gets a
lantern, oil flask, steel and flint. He begins to try to light the damp fuse.
Barbosa is next and his nerves start
to get him. He closes his eyes as he goes over
the side. I never did this... He states
before he tries to move down and before others
can stop him. It seems clear he wants to prove
himself here to the others. Raddok begins
nervous. Unlike Kiet and Mournath who had 80%+ of
success based on how Barbosa is flailing and
stuttering in place Raddok gives him a 30% chance.
About 12 feet down his foot slips and
he falls 6 feet. The safety line catches but he
loses grip on it. But hands jerk on his color
and he slams into the rock face and takes 1 point
of damage. Fremea whispers hes eating too much
biscuits but she will try to help him
down. Barbosa cries out in surprise and Kiet hears this and Velf stops.
Kiet just says no worries to calm him
down best not he know Fremea is around at this time.
Barbosa tries again and this time
falls 4 feet down cliff before Fremea slams into
the wall again cutting his shoulder for 1
point. Raddok considers reeling down fast to
help so ties the ropes around himself.
Barbosa falls another 2 feet as his
feet slip on the wall. Fremea threatens to just
let him drop if he doesn't get his act together.
This time seems to scare the dwarf
and he makes it to the entrance and crawls
quickly into the cave panting heavily.
Raddok heads to the edge but sees no
Barbosa but no body in ocean and ropes are
there. So guess he made it. Since roped up Raddok does the descent.
Arawn goes next and has no issue on the descent.
Pyan admits he doesn't climb. The
best he has done is maybe climbing out of a pig
hallow. Dorhak says neither does he. That's
when Fremea scares them being invisible and says she'll them.
But even at 30% Pyan climbs down like
a champ and enters the cave without a
hitch. Dorhak also seems to take a shine to the
ropes and climbs down with no issues at all.
By now Velf has the lantern lit and stands.
The last one Z'leyra attaches the
ropes as she observed. Her skill is undefined at
this point but she descends. Like the last 2
unskilled climbs she makes it to the cave entrance with no issues.
[Time: 12:45 pm Ma'Dor town Vahear]
The cave itself is humid from the
ocean wind and droplets from the water drawn in
by the wind. The ceiling is 8 feet high with a
area as wide as 18 feet. Velf does a head count, good let's go.
With lantern raised up he brings the
party down a steep decline of about 10 feet. Now
the party is about 30 feet from the
entrance. The area here grows to about 25 feet
wide and is rounded slightly. Arawn notices
glowing lichen on the walls. No, there are runes here. They look dwarven.
Dorhak seems to also notice the
runes. But the others seem to only notice cave
etchings or drawings on the walls.
Velf turns to the group and the
darkness seems total and even Arawn can't see
much beyond a few feet past Velf. We need the
dwarfs to read Dvalinn. No humans are allowed so
we are told to learn it. We have evidence from
past tries here that when a human does read
...they suddenly suffer. So these 2 dwarfs are
our only hope. You there, step forward! he points to Barbosa.
Barbosa is still panting and wrapping
his cuts. He sees Velf gesture to him but looks to Raddok to translate.
Actions? Comments?
Next Update...Monday...
GM: I didn't get info on order who goes
when so moved things along and randomized. Even
with 3 having 30% did well except for Barbosa who
failed a few times. If Fremea wasn't there he
might be dead. Sorry for delay lost hours
Saturday and Monday/Tuesday. Started late and
ended early when didn't want to. I wanted to get
more detailed here but its 3am so want to get
this out for reaction. More details to come in
next update. Unali what's up with you?
